About this property

CASA DEL MAR - beautiful oceanfront house in the center of Las Peñitas

Beautiful oceanfront home with three bedrooms and three bathrooms.
New opened upstairs bedroom with balcony and bathroom inside.
We don´t have a/c, wifi or television, but you don´t need this, because there´s always a breeze from the ocean and you can see every night beautiful sunsets and stars.
You will be well taken care of by our wonderful caretakers.
Perfect weather all year round.
Las Peñitas is a still unspoilt small fishing/surfing village where you most of the time have the beach of your own.
The house is right in the center, where you will find restaurants, bars and surf schools. A grocery shop is right in front of the house.
It´s only a short drive to León, where you will find museums churches and nice colonial architecture.

Nice property. Great location on a beautiful beach. Needs lots of Maintenance.

Beautiful property on a very nice beach. The house and property are in dire need of repairs and clean-up. Hand railing is falling off. A few bags of garbage needed to be cleaned up. Two different medium piles of leaves in the yard needed cleaned up. One huge pile of leaves and branches in front of the gate, partly blocking access to the beach. The water to the upstairs shower stopped working after the first day. Bugs are bad at night. The wooden decks and stairs to the bedroom are due for some serious repairs. I would condemn them. When we would turn on the water to the sink, sometimes frogs would shoot out. Wife wasn't happy. The place has a new roof. No hot water or A/C. No glass windows. Overall, of the 11 places I stayed at, during or trip (Jan. 19-Feb.16, 2023) This was the worst house but top 2 location/beach. I would not rent this house again at the price that I paid.

Nice house, good location. The appliances should be upgraded. The coffee maker didn’t work, and the refrigerator is ancient and barely functional.

great view

I booked this property because of the promise of a view. It did not disappoint. I spent as much time as possible (when not bird watching) on the balcony enjoying the sound of the waves. There were many restaurants easy walking distance, but I should probably have taken up the offer of homemade cuisine by the housekeepers. Benefits of the house were the close proximity and approx. 5 minute walk to boats to Juan Venado Island with stunning birds and turtles hatching. Would definitely stay again. I had GREAT COMPANY.

rustic beach charm

This is a very basic beach front open concept beach dwelling. Really only the bedrooms are contained . the upstairs bedroom is lovely ( lots of bugs but it does have a bug net) and has its own bathroom. the two bedrooms downstairs are dark but at least had bug screens on the windows. bathrooms are outside. one bedroom downstairs had only one window and had a bat in it while we were visiting. to keep the property secure a fair amount of work needs to be done to lock everything up every time you leave. kitchen equipment ( fridge especially) is in poor shape. we think this is due to the fact is is right on the beach. lots of plates, cutlery and utensils. sunsets are amazing. good restaurants near by. small food store just across the street. Local bus drops off just in front of the house and can be very noisy early in the morning. We stayed in the upper bedroom and really enjoyed it. views are great and the ensuite makes it very nice.

Great location, not the best value

The house is perfectly situated for beach and restaurant access. The house is spacious, has nice shaded seating areas and garden. Susanne and Abel (local manager) are both very responsive and helpful. Having said that, there are a few things that we would have been happier with. The house was not clean and was poorly equipped with basic necessities. For the ~$115/night for two we would have appreciated a couple of hand towels in the bathrooms, towels for the beach, clean/newer kitchen towels, a fresh bar of soap in the bathroom, and maybe even shampoo. We had to request extra toilet paper (we were only there for 4 nights) and we barely had enough sugar. The wifi, while not an important part of our vacation, was barely functional. The house in general would benefit from some 'tender loving care' and some upgrades - especially the kitchen. A broader problem of Las Penitas (an in many other parts of Nicaragua) is that local burning does make it hard to enjoy the evenings and nights - especially since one has to keep windows open. (Remember, no A/C.) We did enjoy our stay and would consider returning to Las Penitas. It is still authentic Nicaragua and the people are really great.

Awesome house

Loved the house, in a great location right on the beach. Very private yet open to the ocean. Took ourselves minute to get the way of life here right but as soon as we did...wow. Las penitas is an excellent town and an easy jump to leon and more. Some of the grandest sunsets I've ever seen. Will be back.

Fun at the Beach

Just got back from Casa Del Mar three days ago. Loved the spot, loved the house, the town was unique and safe. The house was well equipped, tastefully decorated, and conveniently located. We made a few meals at the house and ate out quite a bit at the wide variety of small restaurants scattered along the main road. The ride into Leon was easy via the Chicken Bus and finding a cab back was just as easy (we spoke no spanish). The upstairs large bedroom is roomy and has a wonderful beach breeze almost all the time. We took surfing lessons from Roger at Pelican Surf just a short walk down the beach, I highly recommend him (they aren't well off and really appreciated the few items of clothing we left behind for him and his wife, they have a 2 yr old son as well that could use a few things). Abel and Sorocco are very friendly and take good care of the place every other day or so. Don't hesitate to ask for something if you notice something is missing, they are glad to help. We didn't find the store across the road to be overly expensive, however it is very basic. The waves are large yes, but we didn't find there to be a huge undertow and the water is quite shallow for a while making it easy to play in the surf while keeping your feet on the ground for safety. April is HOT HOT HOT....didn't get below 40 degrees the whole time (not complaining, just an observation). Barca De Oro, Simple Beach, Sua, and Playa Roca were all places we tried for food and liked every single one for different reasons. We took the bus into town to meet up with Quetzaltrekkers for a Sunset Hike of Volcan Telica....would highly recommend this group as they give away most of their profits to the less fortunate in Leon. We also had Abel pick up food for us because our arrival time would have made it impossible to get anything, he was happy to pick up anything we needed and had the fridge nice and full for our arrival. We definitely recommend this place!

Great property & location

Stayed 6 nights in March 2017. This was our second time at this house and we truly enjoyed every day. The location couldn't be better, right on the beach, close to a few local restaurants (there's not many in the entire town). Will definitely return!

A relaxing stay. We would come back to Casa Del Mar.

We were a family of 5 (mom, dad, 1 teen, 2 20 somethings) looking for a quiet place on the beach, for the first part of our trip to Nicaragua. We found it in Las Penitas. Casa Del Mar (the name of the house) is simple, but great. In Nicaragua, a lot of living space is outside, and that is the way it is at Casa Del Mar. The eating area and hanging out area is beautiful, surrounded by lots of plants and you can see and hear the ocean. The kitchen is simple, but the gas stove works well, and the fridge is also in good repair (we cooked a number of meals and had no problems). If you are doing some of your own cooking, it is best to head into the grocery stores in Leon (La Union or Colonia) as the local stores we found were all very small...we took the chicken bus into town and then took a taxi back with our groceries. The bedrooms in the house are simple but ok. The upstairs bedroom with the balcony is great...nice view of the ocean and great to hear the waves all night. Las Penitas itself is small and very "local"...this is not a touristy spot. There are a number of decent restaurants in town...we enjoyed the Oasis (a few doors down), the Lazy Turtle, and Barca de Oro. We really enjoyed hanging out in the hammocks, swimming in the ocean, and surfing (surfing is really good)...also just walking down the main street to grab an inexpensive drink at one of the many little bars. We also did day excursions to Leon. Once we got to know the local Las Penitas people a bit, we realized how great they were...very honest, very friendly. Suzanne (the owner) sent a lot of info in advance of our trip, which was helpful. The caretakers for the house, Abel and Sorocco, were great! We even had Sorocco make dinner for us one evening, and that was wonderful. One thing to note: most people in Las Penitas only speak Spanish (naturally), so learn a little Spanish or bring Google Translate. We would go back to Las Penitas, and we would be happy to stay in Casa Del Mar again.

a great place to spend christmas!!

This is a very airy beachhouse with all the facilities you'll need - and it sits on one of the most prettiest stretches of the beach in Las Peñitas! The master bedroom upstairs with its terrace is a gem that offers breathtaking views. There is a little grocery store right opposite and several bars/restaurants within a 5 min walk. The owner couldn't have been more helpful and the caretakers, a very friendly Nica couple, did a great job cleaning the place and explaining how everything works. Highly recommended!

Nicaragua is the new Hawaii

Our family of 5 stayed in this perfect beachfront, 3 bedroom house for 2 weeks. If you love local Hawaii (vs. tourist Hawaii) you will love this home and the small fishing community of Las Penitas. Our kids took surfing lessons with Patrick and Antonio (2 well known surf locals). Patrick speaks English and both were fantastic with our kids and both teachers were amazing surfers in their own right. Our kids also took Spanish lessons with Carla who can be found at the local Pizza restaurant. Abel and Socoro the house managers were excellent and quick to respond to even our smallest requests. The house is perfectly located between great restaurants and right in front of a little market. We also fell in love with 2 local dogs (Lola and Noname) who adopted us. We enjoyed the house, the people, the community and the warm waters.

Nicaragua trip

We stayed three very enjoyable weeks in this comfortable beach house - "we" being two Canadian couples. We were the first renters to also have access to the breezy attractive second floor bedroom. We found the kitchen facilities complete enough for our needs and loved the covered "breezeway". The beach was a big attraction of course and we made good use of the boogie boards. We soon got into a routine. First a sunrise walk on the beach often to the estuary then made breakfast followed by a couple of swims then lunch and siestas - it was hot in the afternoon - 35 to 37 degrees but with a steady breeze and low humidity. Happy hour watching the sunset from the upper balcony then we would eat out at one of the surprisingly good modest restaurants. There were five within a 10 minute walk - our favourites were El Faro, Baca de Oro and a pizza place, all toward the end of the road. A couple of times a week we caught the chicken bus into Leon to look around and buy our supplies (we liked Colonia near the basketball courts) then hire a taxi for the twenty minute return trip. Abel and Sorocco were very helpful and attentive. Sorocco prepared a tasty fish dinner and served it to us at the casa. The only problem was the water pump which could be noisy and unpredictable. During the middle of the night there would be a few annoying "ka thunks" so we had Abel show us how to use the cistern which bypassed the pump. No problem then. We would lake to thank the previous owners, Lisa and Stefan, for their kind assistance and advice. In short, this was a good value and a very pleasant stay.

Las Penitas beach front

Our stay was a fun get away from busy , dustyLeon. The rental was as described online. This is basically a mostly outdoor living set up. Everything is open to the elements of heat, wind, no wind, bugs and the music of many neighbors . The bedrooms did have fans, thank goodness, but for some reason the ocean breezes did not make it through, which made sleeping almost unbearable when the electricity went out. This part of nicaragua is very very hot in January but the home provided a nice respite from the sun. The surf was great and the boogie boards provided were well used. The amount of security measures and the area outside the rental were a little unsettling but we had no issues while we were there. Overall , a great place to read a book or two and get away from technology. Bring food supplies with you since there's really only a few restaurants. This is a great rental for the budget traveller.

Outstanding beach house

I would highly recommend this property to anyone travelling to Les Penitas. Clean, comfortable, well equipped large kitchen, spacious bedrooms and beautiful garden. Situated a moments walk from the beach, and minutes away from local restaurants we found it ideal. Caretakers Abel and Sirocco were lovely and very attentive. Check out the Lazy Turtle, Coco Surf School and Hotel Suyapa for quality food and surfing instruction. Thank you Susanne for a wonderful stay. Michael and Mia.

Location, Location, Location!

First let me qualify this review. We were the last to rent from the previous owners. It is now under new management. It is Right on the beach central to all the restaurants and across the street from a cantina. Getting into Leon was extremely easy. The locals are very friendly. The rental is very clean. The caretakers were very pleasant but spoke minimal English. Whenever you needed anything they were very helpful. The one downfall is that you must go outside of your bedroom to go to the outside washroom. In the middle if the night for a woman, that is a little unnerving. There were water supply issues but being very resourceful and playing with all the red knobs, we got the water flowing. The previous owner failed to mention that there is no hot water or that the bathrooms were outside! When you shower do it at the end of the day as the water has had a chance to warm up! Otherwise very refreshing lol I feel it was a little overpriced for what you received but a pleasant experience just the same.

Beautiful, Comfortable Relaxing Home and Vaca in Las Penitas

What a wonderful vacation! 2 weeks just wasn't enough... the home was comfortable, secure, beautiful and relaxing. Perfect central location: Walking distance to everything in the area. Convenience store across the street was perfect for nights that we didn't want to eat at a restaurant and decided to cook at the house. Private, serene paradise. The caretakers and homeowners were so awesome and helpful. Busline and taxi is ultra-cheap and easy to access if you want to venture outside of the immediate area. People are so friendly, local and international..... I'll be back soon!!!!

Wonderful Surfing, Great People, and Great Location

Nicaragua was a beautiful country, it was more than I could have even imagined. Las Penitas is a location that my husband and I would love to return to year after year. In the short time that my husband and I were in Las Penitas we were able to meet wonderful people- "what a great community". Wonderful surfing, restaurants, and everything was within walking distance. We loved everything about the house and the environment around us. Thanks for the great time. Nicaragua is a wonderful place.

A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY, A KIND COMMUNITY, AND A LOVELY HOME

My husband have gone on vacations where we arrive in a town, stay a day or two, then catch a train to the next location. This trip, we really wanted to plant ourselves somewhere in order to get to know the people, environment and culture; our trip to Las Penitas allowed us to do just that. We stayed in this lovely home for 2 weeks, over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. It was an incredible experience and we had a blast taking part in the local celebrations! When we arrived the caretakers were standing at the gate to greet us. They were a very kind couple who obviously cared about the home. Two of our friends joined for the second week of beach bliss. The home was perfect for the four of us, furnished with relaxing hammock swings and everything you might need in the kitchen. We took surf lessons just down the road and had drinks with our instructor. From town, we took a tour of the mangroves with two very talented guides. From the house you can smell the shop across the street making the most amazing tortillas!! The town of Las Penitas wants you to enjoy their community; people are friendly and it's very apparent that they care about each other. The homeowner were so helpful in recommending transportation options and quickly answered any travel questions we had. They made our vacation so easy and we appreciate all of their advice. Las Penitas is a great place for people looking to slow down, get to know a beautiful community, have a good night out, and enjoy a little adventure.

PERFECT LOCATION AND DWELLING

My husband I met up with another couple and shared this beautiful home. Abel was there to meet us when we got out of the taxi, he was kind and courteous the entire time. The bedrooms were comfortable, bathrooms clean and functional, the kitchen stocked and big for group cooking sessions and the porch was the real gem. Complete with comfortable chairs, a table for playing cards and most importantly an incredible ocean view. We stayed for a little less than a week and traveled, but I wish we would've spent our whole vacation here!

Easy Living

Our stay in this Las Penitas oasis exceeded all expectations. This beach house is the perfect getaway for adventurers who are looking for a relaxing home base or a family-friendly vacation. We enjoyed daily swims, surfing and boogie boarding (boogie boards provided in house). They also offer horseback riding on the beach within walking distance. I recommend going at sunset. We found locals who provided us with fresh tortillas, eggs and fish to take home for family cooked meals at the house. With a beautiful ocean view from the kitchen, even cooking was a pleasurable experience. The patio and garden area was a great place to visit, play cards and unwind at the day's end. The home itself was very clean, feeling private and secure. Leon is a quick bus ride away, where you can find an abundance of history and beautiful architecture. Basic foods can be found in Las Penitas, but we found that grocery shopping in Leon was more suitable for cooking at home. The caretaker Abel was very kind and stopped by every other day, as well. It was very difficult to leave this home after a week. I would definitely recommend staying longer.

Beach Home Away From Home

My husband and I stayed in this wonderful oasis for 3 weeks this past April. We enjoyed peace, quiet, waves and the beach, all in abundance. We made ourselves at home, catching fish and cooking most of our meals looking out at the waves. Nicaraguan coffee in the morning and Flor de Cana rum cocktails every sunset, right on the beach in front of the house. A weekly trip to Leon for groceries was always quite fun, just take the local bus there and return with your loot in a taxi. The caretakers Socorro and Abel are absolutely fantastic and a goldmine of help and information. Owners Lisa and Stephen recommended local Spanish teacher Elisabeth Hofsted from Leonlingua around the corner from the house for lessons, and I was able to brush up on my spanish as well. Truly a super vacation, we hope to come back soon!

Comfortable beach house

We originally booked the house for one week, but enjoyed the space so much that we extended our stay for another week. The location is great, right on the beach. The bus to Leon stops in front of the house, and you can buy eggs, tortillas, bread and veggies across the street. There are also several restaurants within walking distance if you don't feel like cooking. The caretakers, Abel and Socorro were wonderful, especially fun helping us with Spanish! It really was a great vacation...we recommend this house for its privacy, comfort and location.

Oceanfront Home - Northern Nicaragua, with Volcanoes and Surf

My family and I had a wonderful experience staying at this property for a month. The owner consistently made things easy and safe for us. She responded thoughtfully to our questions in a timely manner. The residence is lovely. Even though it is not air conditioned we were never uncomfortable with the heat. This is because of how the house is designed, the natural breeze and the fans in our bedrooms. We loved being right on the sandy ocean beach and being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. It is also known for being a beginner's surfer's beach. I highly recommend this residence as a peaceful retreat with as much adventure as you wish.

A perfect relaxing holiday!

This was my first vacation travelling with my five month old son, and it was the perfect place to be. It was relaxing, it was clean and comfortable, there were easy ways to keep him (and us) cooled off, and there was everything we needed. I would definitely recommend coming to stay here to other family members and friends.
