About this property
Historic home in vibrant coastal town is a contemporary beauty!
An easy 10-minute walk to the harbor and city center, the Michael S. Chapman House (1854) is nestled into one of the most attractive parts of Belfast, a vibrant waterfront community. At the same time, our location is the perfect vacation base for Acadia National Park and surrounding midcoast Maine with a wide range of activities and dining available.
Whether you’re cooking in the full-equipped gourmet kitchen, playing darts in the pub room, relaxing in the large living room around a wood burning fireplace, or reading in the loft library, this is a house that insists you feel at home. Outside you’ll find a large screened-in porch set up for dining, an attached deck with gas grill and Blackstone griddle, and a cozy fire pit where you can fall into Adirondack chairs after that long day on the water. Upstairs, the three bedrooms and two full baths are perfect for three couples or a family with children eight years of age or older.
This area of Maine requires time to take advantage of what this vacation wonderland has to offer and to absorb the atmosphere of Belfast -- recently named the “Best Place to Live in Maine." From its working waterfront to its family owned lobster boats, galleries, stores and restaurants, Belfast remains the real deal. A stay at the Michael S. Chapman House, our home, will make you feel a part of it.

About the host
Hosted by Al Scovern

Hi! We are your hosts, Diane and Al. While you are enjoying our home, we will be cruising the Maine coast and living on our old 36 foot trawler, something that we do each summer. We had long careers as psychologists and always lived in land-locked areas. When we found retirement bliss in coastal Maine, we had no idea we would become captivated by the idea of spending time ON the water, not just looking at it. Encouraged by friends, who’ve done the same, we decided to open our home to Belfast visitors during summer months. We hope you’ll find it as inviting and comfortable as we do when we’re not on the high seas.
Choosing to live in old intriguing houses every time we moved, Al and I also developed an interest in rehabbing old houses, and the Michael S. Chapman house is the fourth one that we have transformed. Because Al always takes down at least one interior wall, see if you can guess where he chose to exercise this option in this house! You will see some of Al’s ceramics throughout the house which has been a major outside interest of his, and hopefully flowers will be blooming during your stay which reflect my efforts to increase the beauty outside.
We expect to be available if something arises for which you need our attention, but in case we are out cruising, we will make sure that you have emergency contacts as well. Please enjoy the many places in our house that we have created for different needs and moods!

Why they chose this property
Not only is Belfast a quintessential New England town with large white homes going up a hill, but our neighborhood is a sanctuary within it. While close to "downtown," this residential section is in a beautiful section that helps you relax and recuperate for the many adventures that await you in midcoast Maine.
What makes this property unique
The Michael S. Chapman house lets guests experience both the historic sense of Belfast's past in the mid 1800s and the contemporary beauty of a carefully rehabilitated relic from 1854. The house has large rooms, surprising for old historic homes in Belfast, but also has nooks and spaces which provide for cozy experiences. The beauty of this house extends outside with the screened porch, fenced yard, and garden.
