About this property

Lovely duplex loft on the coolest block in the South Street Seaport

Location: South Street Seaport, Manhattan, New York City, USA (access to 9 major subway lines is two blocks away, in the multi-destination Fulton St. Subway hub.)

Accommodations. The top 2 floors of an historic landmark building in one of the most beautiful historic neighborhoods in New York City. Sparely furnished. 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a large, light-filled kitchen, spacious dining and living room areas, a private terrace, Sleeps 4-5. 5 day minimum. Internet, Cable t.v.,air conditioning, washer/dryer, iron

Located on historic Front St, on a charming cobblestone street with views of the Brooklyn Bridge, this elegant, light-filled loft is on a stylish residential block of bustling cafes and cozy neighborhood restaurants. The street is lively in the day and evening-- and blissfully quiet late at night. And it is wonderfully central. The neighborhood is only a short walk to the chic restaurants and bars of Tribeca, the boutiques and small designer shops of Soho, as well as to Chinatown, Little Italy, Noho and the bohemian haunts of the East and West Village. It is also only a few subway stops from the hip, up-and-coming neighborhoods of Brooklyn. And just one block from the spectacular new food mecca, the tin building by Jean-George, a French emporium with 53,000 sq. ft. of beautifully curated food, flowers, drink, raw bar, and earthy delights in an historic building on the East River. Other neighborhood highlights include a vibrant selection of local restaurants, The Cipriani South Street, small batch Van Leeuwen ice cream parlor and Peck Slip Plaza, a two- block natural landscaped street park.

We are two short blocks from the multi-destination Fulton subway station hub, and only steps away from Seaport shopping, the beautifully designed new Pier 15 for observation and concerts, The East River Esplanade for jogging and sauntering, the World Trade Center Memorial Site (and not far from Battery Park--a 15 minute walk--and ferries to the State of Liberty and Brooklyn.)

Bikes can be rented a block away, where one can amble along the riverfront toward Battery Park, enjoying some of the cities most spectacular views, and then up the newly renovated Hudson River Park all the way to the upper end of Manhattan, or head in the other direction and ride across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Our neighborhood is an easy and safe location to get to and from, whether it's to New York’s museums or to Lincoln Center and the Broadway theaters, (just four subway stops away) or to Central Park.

The loft itself occupies the top two floors of a lovely, converted 19th century brick counting house, combining the bohemian feel of a loft (2400 sq. feet) with the privacy and understated luxury of a townhouse. It has two+ bedrooms, two full baths, a spacious kitchen fitted out with high-end appliances, (including a nespresso machine and a new Bosch cooktop) and a private terrace off the kitchen. There is a dishwasher, washer/dryer, A/C, cable TV, a DVD player and wi-fi internet.

Both floors boast wood beamed ceilings and are light-filled and sparely furnished, with a mix of modern pieces and Danish antiques. The loft has an open plan, so the kitchen, dining and living rooms flow into each other. The top floor, which doubles as an artist’s studio, has a soaring cathedral ceiling with skylights and serves as a large and dramatic master bedroom. There is an elegant bathroom- cum- marble shower (with a rain shower) off of the master bedroom, as well as a second bedroom, which works well for children. The third bedroom is on the living floor below and adjoins the bathroom downstairs, which has a separate bath and shower. No elevator.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have established enhanced health and safety measures for our guests and our housekeeper. However, an inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. We are taking extra measures to disinfect and provide a safe place to enjoy. If you wish, you can order groceries and take out meals from the many restaurants in our neighborhood, allowing you to settle in and relax the moment you arrive!

We look forward to welcoming you on your upcoming visit.

Unparalleled bliss

Unique historical loft with original features, tastefully decorated and well-located. Staying here is the New York experience from the past in a neighbourhood of the present. Hosts are wonderful and kind, the place is comfortable and clean, and the private terrace is a luxury.

amazing apartment

We really enjoyed staying at Andrea and Kit's place. It was a perfect fit for us and my parents over the Thanksgiving Holiday! The area offers everything you could need and I loved ordering breakfast from Made Fresh Daily which is located on the main level of the building. We look forward to staying at this location again!

Love this place!

This area of Manhattan is so beautiful, great for walking, running, sightseeing, and the restaurants and stores are wonderful. We walked to the Brooklyn Bridge, which you can see from the loft, the Statue of Liberty and ground zero are just a few blocks away. Walked to little Italy and TriBeCa and enjoyed the most amazing dinners, although our favorite restaurant was right across the street. We met Sarah Jessica Parker at SJP, her boutique two blocks away, and like all of the New Yorkers we met on this trip she was kind and attentive. Everyone takes covid very seriously, and NYC has found a way to navigate this time beautifully, will safe measures apparent everywhere. We enjoyed the new extensive outdoor dining in the city. We can’t say enough about the loft! It is spacious and full of character. The terrace was wonderful for late night dinners in and the kitchen very well equipped. Down filled sofas and hand hooked rugs, antiques and the beautiful art work of Kit’s made it hard to leave. Andrea and Kit are gracious and thoughtful hosts, we hope to come back again and again. Fabulous loft, fabulous location, recommend a million times over!

We love, love, loved our stay in this property. We have visited and stayed in New York many times but this time we specifically wanted a proper NY loft experience! We were not disappointed with this property it is huge! Set on 2 floors of one of the oldest commercial buildings in Manhattan, we had stacks of space to relax in after a hard days sight seeing! The top floor has a shower room, 2 bedrooms (one of them being a huge space which is the owners studio) and has all the original beams and skylight and is just a fabulously interesting space. The middle floor has the 3rd bedroom, large open plan living, dinning and kitchen plus a lovely quirky bathroom. There is also a very nice terrace through the kitchen doors which we enjoyed sitting out on with a glass of wine in the evenings. It was also fun to sit out on the fire escape (outside the top floor window) and people watch the busy street below & the wonderful view of the Brooklyn Bridge. The loft is fully air conned, has dishwasher in the kitchen and washing machine and dryer (at the bottom of the stairs as you come in). I can't vouch for the Sea Port area enough. The loft is located on a nice bustling street with lots of lovely restaurants, bars and cafes. Across the road is Pier 17 which, whilst we were there was being used as a concert venue (on the roof of the main building) and has a wonderful deck and seating area all the way round the venue which we went to most evenings and enjoyed the view of the Brooklyn Bridge whilst the kids played the deck games and we enjoyed a drink. I especially loved being able to run each morning under the Brooklyn Bridge and upto to the Williamsburg Bridge and back. There were so many runners and people out working out & doing tai chi from very early in the morning, I felt incredi safe and was a fabulous flat run all along the river side. Andrea was the perfect host, so friendly and responsive to any of our questions. We would most definitely stay here again and recommend. The photo's do not do it justice. Thanks again for letting us stay in your lovely place.

Einfach genial / Just awesome

----- We were in New York City for four weeks and couldn't have imagine a better place to stay for that time. The apartment is SUPER, is spacious, has an amazing flair and you can really "live" here and don't just have to use the accommodation to stay overnight. Unique does not describe this NYC experience

Couldn’t quite believe we were in Manhattan - the loft is a time travel machine - creaky floors and all! We loved every bit of it - and I hate climbing stairs. It was warm and cozy and different and so much fun! Our family of four had a lovely time in the loft - it was spacious with enough room for everyone. We cooked one night and found the kitchen well equipped. Laundry on the 1st floor. We had a Great list of stores and restaurants that Andrea had recommended. The neighborhood is nice and quiet yet has everything you would need. Super clean. Nice and warm. Lovely stay.

stylish manhattan loft

Massive space compared to most manhattan rentals, stylish with all the facilities you need. Super responsive owners and excellent location under the Brooklyn bridge with transport links at Fulton street to get you almost anywhere quickly. Above coffee shops and restaurants so breakfast easy and local supermarket also very close. A spacious relaxing haven to contrast the bustling days in the city.

Cool loft experience made us feel like "real new yorkers..."

Sitting in Kit and Andrea's fantastic NYC loft was like being transported into a Woody Allen film. From the historic aspects of the building that were clearly lovingly maintained over the years, to Kit's well placed art work throughout the apartment, and the well-read books that lined the shelves - we truly felt at home and privileged to have the opportunity to stay in such a unique and interesting space. The location is fantastic, and well we have typically stayed in Midtown when visiting NYC, the Seaport area is now our new favourite spot! It was happenstance that we stumbled across this loft as we needed a location that was within walking distance to the New York Film Academy for our two boys, who attended a week of summer camp. The loft proved to be the perfect location - it's proximity to Battery Park (where the camp is located) the Brooklyn Bridge, the Staten Island ferry, the half price ticket booth, the new iPic theatre (which our kids loved - we have something comparable in Canada, but children under 19 are not permitted), the ease of accessing the subway, and the abundance of amazing restaurants, made our vacation fantastic! Thank you Kit & Andrea for sharing your home with us - looking forward to our next visit! Shilpa & Mark (from Toronto)

Wonderful stay in the South Seaport

Our family had a wonderful stay in this beautiful loft apartment in the South Seaport district! It was spacious enough for our family, thoughtfully appointed, comfortably furnished, and filled with art, literature and beauty. The neighborhood was great, with restaurants, coffee shops and an incredible view of the Brooklyn Bridge. The premises and amenities were as described, and communications with the owners were excellent. The owners left a detailed book with information about the neighborhood with helpful recommendations for groceries and restaurants. I wish we were back there now!

Historic home in New York's Financial District

This was one of the most enjoyable renting experiences we've had. Andrea and Kit are gracious hosts. Their home is a comfortable place to stay, full of wonderful history. Their neighborhood has great places to eat, relaxing places to enjoy the harbor and was a calming getaway from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the city. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely want to stay here again whenever we come back to New York!

Live like a local in this cool loft!!

Have just returned from an incredible 15 night stay in this cool, art filled loft and cannot begin to do it justice. Our expectations were certainly high after pouring over the gorgeous photos, but it seriously went way beyond anything we could have imagined. Andrea and Kit were exceptional hosts and showed such warmth and genuine interest, ensuring our experience was perfect. It actually felt as though we were staying at the home of dear friends, allowing us to feel like locals in this gorgeous and peaceful precinct. The location was fantastic. Having stayed previously in many other neighbourhoods, this is now our favourite. There are so many wonderful restaurants, bars and coffee shops nearby, and the market on Fulton Street is so handy on the way home from Fulton St Station after a big day out. Our favourite restaurants were Via Carota, Barbulo, Odeon, Tiny's, Il Brigante and Augustine (all recommended by Andrea and Kit). Morning runs along the East River north, or south to Battery Park and up the Hudson were beautiful, in addition to the Brooklyn Bridge which is always spectacular. Don't hesitate booking this apartment. If you are reading this review you were obviously drawn to this apartment by the amazing photos. Believe me it is exactly as described, only better. Go ahead and read all the other reviews - I wholeheartedly agree with everything that has been written before. Book this apartment and enjoy!! Thank you so much Andrea and Kit!! We can't wait to come again soon.

Great place to stay

Just returned from staying at this lovely home. Very large loft style home in a great location, known as South Seaport. Located only one block from the bay. Although there was a really large kitchen in this home, we didn’t use it because of the nice selection of restaurants, pubs, including an ice cream shop (no cash accepted) and coffee shops. The 55 Fulton Market was 2 blocks from us and included a nice buffet. We were within walking distance to Wall Street, Financial District, China Town, 911 Memorial, Stanton Island Ferry and Battery Park to name a few. Brooklyn Bridge is easily accessible for morning walks with unbelievable views of New York City! To venture out of the area there is a large subway hub about 4 blocks away. We purchased orchestra seats for the Broadway production of Waitress for a very reasonable price at the South Street Seaport TKTS ticket booth located about a block away. I would 100% recommend this home when in New York!

About the host

Hosted by Andrea Barnet

Host profile image
We are an artist and writer who bought our building in 1978 as a derelict shell and renovated it ourselves, when the Seaport was still an undiscovered and neglected neighborhood peopled with artists and fish mongers who plied the streets at night when the wholesale fish market used to operate. (The market is now long gone). We have lived there for many years and now split our time between New York City and upstate New York, visiting the farm in West Virginia where my husband grew up whenever we can. We raised our daughter in the building and have many friends in the seaport and tribeca, which is only a stone's throw away. Because we work for ourselves-- and now that our daughter has grown up-- our schedules are flexible and we no longer need to be in the city full time. We are deeply attached to the building, partly because we brought it back from the dead (it had no windows, plumbing or electricity when we bought it) but also because it is utterly unique, as I hope the pictures convey.

What makes this property unique

Our neighborhood is lovely, intimate, and well located. (Our building is the third oldest existing commercial building in lower Manhattan.) What we love is feeling the historic character of old New York, yet being within easy walking distance of all the downtown neighborhoods and amenities we use most. (tribeca, the lower east side, soho and noho) Often, especially in good weather, we don't have to use the subway at all. When we do, both the east and west side subways juncture at our subway stop, which is unusual for New York. And because we are just one block from the waterfront, one never feels overwhelmed by the size or density of the city. One can amble over to the piers at any time of day or night, and take in the Brooklyn and Manhattan skylines and on a clear day, even the Veranzzano narrows in the distance. (or take one of the ferry boats plying back and forth across the East river to Brooklyn.) For us, a huge plus is that our block is quiet late at night, so great for sleeping, but also filled with wonderful little restaurants and cafes. And there is a view of the Brooklyn bridge from our windows!
