About this property

1899 Old Log Cabin School House w/10 acres on the Chesapeake Bay with Beach

Bring your family and relax in this Log Cabin School, hand built in 1899. Situated on a private peninsula, and with over 10 acres you will have unbelievable views and access to everything nature has to offer on both land and water! With its own private dock and beach, you will be equipped with kayaks, canoes, fishing rods, and crab traps to spend the day adventuring the Chesapeake Bay. Or you can sit back and relax on one of many water side hammocks, or just enjoy a fire on the private beach.

The space:

Hand built in 1899 by Scandanavian carpenters the school, now a converted home boasts 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths and ample space both inside and out.

Outside we provide multiple kayaks, a canoe, fishing rods, and crab traps to enjoy right off your private dock. You will be able to catch endless bay fish and crabs all year round and cook them up either on our BBQ grill or boil them in a large pot on the gas stove!

Have a boat? There is a marina 5 minutes away you can drop in and swing over to the home and take the family out for a day of water sports or fishing. On land there is a private beach with a fire pit, grape vines, and persimmon trees. Enjoy a few games of Horsehoe as well. The back yard is very large and there is ample space for a game of wiffle ball or setup our volleyball and badminton net.

Take a walk around the 10 acres as we have trails along the peninsula and are lined with hammocks and viewing areas. The wildlife is abundant on the property and turkey, deer, heron, egrets, and osprey sightings are a daily occurrence.

As you make your way inside you will not be far from the water as you have bay view out of every room in the home. The "Old Log School" provides generous space for up to 10 guests with modern day amenities. When you walk in you are greeted with a large foyer and views out into the water. A large living room provides a 55" HD tv, designer furniture, exposed log walls, and exposed ceiling beams. Walk out onto the private large screened in porch with hammock, outdoor furniture, and dining area.

The kitchen is aged with creaky wood floors and updated appliances including an 8-burner gas stove and oven where you can boil up fresh crabs or bake some fresh trout or puppy drum. Enjoy your meal with provided crab utensils inside or out.

Upstairs there are 4 bedrooms. 2 "masters", one with a large king bed and the other a queen. The 3rd bedroom is perfect for teens with a bunk bed and 1 full size bed overlooking the bay. The 4th bedroom is small and perfect for a kid. The king master has view of the water from every angle and also a 55" HD tv when ready to settle down for the night. The bathroom has a large soaking tub. The other large bathroom hosts a shower only and has a heated venting system to keep your feet warm. Lastly, the upstairs foyer is perfect as a small lounge for some board games.

Lastly, we have an old carriage house that has fishing rods, tackle, a small bait fridge, life jackets, nets, inflatables, and other outdoor amenities. Bait for fishing can be purchased just 5 minutes up the road from NorthStar market.

Mathews County and nearby Gloucester have great seafood restaurants and diners for you and your family to enjoy. Other larger beaches are also nearby and just a 15-minute drive. There are also local farms you can visit year-round and support. Whether its blue berries, pumpkins, honey, sunflowers, eggs, or fresh veggies there is a farm for you. OR swing into town and visit the weekend Farmers Market.

Guest access

You will have full access to ALL 10+ acres! 7 kayaks, fishing poles, no license needed for fishing.

Other things to note:

The home is old, and we are excited to have you join us on our journey as we revitalize this "Old Log School". With that there are things to note. The exterior of the home has not been painted yet, and carriage house and front porch will be going under renovation soon. The door heights are lower than standard homes upstairs so if 6ft or taller...duck...In the dead of winter the heat units do well, but the insulation is thin and floors are cold. We provide additional space heaters for winter.

Here we go again

Let broken pumlbing go unattended to for more than 5 days. One more and I would have left. Sets you up to pay stupid sums on incidentals to pay for their fishing cabin. Great land and water… not for the timid. That’s as nice as I can be.

We are from Richmond Virginia and love sharing this unique property and showing off the history it has to offer.

Why they chose this property

It is very private and located on its own peninsula. We are surrounded completely by nature with the only noises coming from that of jumping fish and chirping birds.

What makes this property unique

It was a hand built log cabin school run by 2 women in late 1800s and early 1900s.
