Great week in Northern Ireland

Had a lovely stay at Scion Lodge. Plenty of space, clean, everything we needed, quiet and great farmland scenery to wake up to. I would highly recommend for those planning hiking in the Mournes or on a Game of Thrones tour. Thank you Esther.

Scion Hill Gate Lodge

We had a lovely stay, the lodge is lovely and the standard of accommodation was very high. It was a lovely place to return to after a busy day exploring. The location of the lodge was more remote than expected but we soon got used to the rural location - the roads were narrow but luckily we had access to a good Sat Nav and always found our way about. We managed to see a lot of Northern Ireland and ventured down to Dublin for the day.

spacious, peaceful, stylish property in a beautiful rural setting

We really loved the gate lodge - very spacious and comfortable. It has the most beautiful rural views but is also well located close to local towns and villages. We'd thoroughly recommend it.

Absolutely our favorite VRBO in Ireland

We used this comfortable, well appointed, gate house as our home base for our tour of Northern Ireland. It was absolutely perfect and even had a dryer, making it possible for us to refresh for the second week of our journey. The views were outstanding, the local villages had wonderful restaurants, grocery’s and quaint Irish pubs. If you choose to stay here you will not regret it; I promise.

The Perfect Holiday Cottage

The cottage itself was everything we had hoped for … fabulous accommodation, clean, peaceful and well maintained. It was an excellent location for easy access to all parts of the country’s tourist attractions and places of interest. We would highly recommend this cottage and location as the perfect base.

Awesome

If someone is looking to stay in northern Ireland, I would highly recommend this place. Esther, our host has created an absolutely wonderful home-away-from-home. The surrounding area is stunning. The Halfway House restaurant is a short distance away, the food and the service there is also five star. When we return this is where we will stay.

Scion Gate House

A really comfortable cottage of character in a peaceful location, with nice outlook over surrounding countryside. Our host Esther went out of her way to help us after we suffered a seroius health problem during our stay.

We enjoyed our stay at Scion Lodge. Location was peaceful with beautiful views of the countryside.

Ester was friendly and arrival process was easy. Only criticism is that we found the kitchen a little lacking in cooking utensils ( baking trays etc). Otherwise accommodation was very roomy and well equipped.

Scion Lodge

Scion Lodge was a perfect location for a short break. In fact Scion Lodge exceeded our expectations. The house is very well presented and is tuacked away off a quiet leafy country lane. It was a lovely quiet location. There was really nothing more that we could ask for. Esther, the property owner, popped up one morning to introduce herself as well and pass on some good advice re local attractions etc. Also when we arrived at the property Esther had already left some food supplies in the kitchen for us which was a welcome and very nice touch indeed. The house was very clean and extremely well presented. It was perfect for us as a couple but could easlily cater for 4 people. The wifi connection was also very good. There is a picnic table outside as well which we availed off for breakfast. All in all it was a superb house and we are definitely considering a return visit for a longer period.

Weekend trip

The gate lodge is a lovely property with everything you need to enjoy your visit to this part of County Down. Check in and check out was very straightforward and Esther was on hand if needed. We couldn’t recommend this property highly enough and thoroughly enjoyed our stay, especially the peat fuelled fire in the lounge.

Very comfortable house

This house has a lovely kitchen and beautiful Irish art throughout. The bedrooms and bathrooms are warm and comfortable however it is not perfectly clean. The linens are clean but the other surfaces and floors leave quite a bit to be desired. However we would be happy to rebook it as it is well appointed and very cozy. Thank you for the extra detail of tape so we could wrap some presents.

Idyllic country retreat

The house is clean and well equipped with spacious modern bedrooms and kitchen and a cosy sitting room. Well away from noise but within easy reach, by car, of the nearby towns, such as Hillsborough, Downpatrick, Bambridge and more. Would love to come back.

About the host

Host profile image
This beautiful gatelodge is at the entrance to our Family Farm which was purchased in 1923. It was originally built as a Porters Lodge for the Gentleman's Residence which is Scion Hill. When my Grandfather purchased Scion Hill it was occupied by workers from the family Flax Mill. In 2010 we decided that it should be refurbished into Self Catering accomodation. The original part of the building is now a spacious Kitchen and Living Room while there is a luxurious new extension housing bedrooms, utility room, bathrooms and a hall. The property is very light and airy with high ceilings, large rooms and plenty of windows to enjoy the view.

Why they chose this property

This is a unique property to stay in. It combines the original historic building with luxurious modern facilities.
For special guests there is a small welcome pack of locally produced food.

What makes this property unique

Relax in modern luxury while staying in a historic lodge built in 1840.
Watch the birds in the wooded garden, and dine outside when weather permits.
