Peaceful cottage in Coral bay. The house is very cozy with a lovely screened porch and a nice view. Extra bonus is filtered water and A/C. My only “complaint” is the location is up a paved steep road and driveway. But we would stay again!
The aptly named tropical treehouse was the perfect stay for our island getaway.
It boasts a beautiful view of Coral Bay, has an amazing wrap-around screened in porch so you can soak in said view and keep the bugs at bay. The amenities inside were all perfectly suited for our needs - making meals either before we set out on an adventure for the day or when we returned. The bed was comfortable. There was a deck of cards and a puzzle for us to do while it was heavily raining outside. The east end of the island is definitely quieter, but has loads of really good food spots, and beaches.
The only things I will point out about this spot:
- The ladder up/down from the loft/sleeping area can be a bit sketchy, especially at night or after a few cocktails.
- As can the stairs up/down to the house itself. In fact, it rained quite a bit while we were here, and the stairs became extremely slick. My partner did fall down them, but fortunately caught himself before falling too far. So, if stairs are not your thing, this may not be the spot for you.
- You will want to rent a 4W drive vehicle. The island is not very walk-able as a whole, but especially here, you are staying on the side of the mountain, and even though all the roads are paved, they call still be slick, especially if it rains.
All that being said, we would definitely stay here again. Between the location, the communication from the host/greeters, we had an absolutely lovely experience. I highly recommend it!
Tropical Treehouse was just what we were looking for. Remote, quiet and peaceful. Megan was great in responding to any questions right away. Would definitely stay again!
Very private getaway ideal for an adventurous couple who are looking to be off the beaten path. Fantastic view, working kitchen, outdoor grill, screened in wraparound porch, great for DIYers. We had a great time and we felt very refreshed. Must be ok with stairs/ladder
We enjoyed our stay very much. Although we went out to eat the whole time, they have everything one needs to prepare your meals if you want to. Stairs not for the faint of heart but we had no issues. The only comment I would give is that there should be a motion sensor light when you get into the drive way. It’s very dark and we had to use our phones to get to the stairs down to the house. The stairs are very well lit heading down. Overall 5 stars for us.
Overall, great private place with great view. Very airy. Steps to cottage accurately described. Very good considerate host. Internet is good but occasional outages might make working remote an issue.
Returning to the Tropical Treehouse always feels like our home away from home. Total privacy & seclusion are the reward for the 68 step trek to and from the cottage. We just love it!
Amazing place! Even the people that stayed in the house that you share a parking pad with didn’t know where our place was. Well worth the steps and the drive. It is so wonderful to have filtered water and all the other amenities! We went to 11 different beaches, lookouts, and hikes and everyone of them was beautiful and amazing .
Pros:
Really pretty, everything in order, great view.
Cons: hard to find cabs that will drive to this location. Had to rely on one dude. Had to throw away your own trash. The couch is not comfortable to sleep on. Worth it though.
This rental was pictured as described (minus the blender). Hills in St John are steep and it was a little scary getting in and out of the parking... But you get used to it. Great location relative to some restaurants and grocery stores in Coral Bay. We preferred Coral bay to Cruz Bay since it was a lot more quiet. Plenty of space for 2 people. Great view. Enjoyed looking out at Coral Bay during our breakfast.
Our family of three (two adults, one 10 year old) loved this place! The proximity to numerous beaches, grocery stores, and hiking trails made this ideal for us. Our daughter loved spending the night in the hammock on the screened in porch, the AC was great to have as an option, and the full kitchen and washer/dryer allowed us to be self-sufficient. The stairs getting down to the house are something to consider if you have physical limitations, and you will need a vehicle that can handle steep (and I mean STEEP) grades. We didn't have 4WD, but we had a sturdy SUV. If you can handle those two factors, and you don't mind being a 20 minute drive from the bustle of Cruz Bay, we can't recommend this place enough. The hosts were super considerate about staying in touch with us, and, when our phones didn't work when we got to the island (damn Verizon!) and we had to sporadically communicate through phones borrowed from strangers, they were great about making sure we ended up where we needed to be.
The Tropical Treehouse was amazing!! It was very clean, just like the pictures! The views were spectacular!! Such a magical place to relax! The drive up the first day was a bit scary for me (Sue), but it got easier every day! Good thing Bob did the driving! So glad we had someone show us the way up! The many steps kept us in shape! Thanks so much to Jake and Sarah for sharing their beautiful treehouse with us!!! It made our 35th anniversary celebration so special!!
We had a last minute covid related honeymoon change from Hawaii to St John and Jake and Sarah helped make that happen. Their simple but lovely little slice of paradise was perfection! The cottage was clean, airy, and well equipped. The breezes and view were stunning, as was the hospitality and friendliness of our hosts!
Items to note:
1.) yes, there are a lot of stairs. Part of the adventure but prepare for it.
2.) there is no dresser, but a small hanging stand. Pack accordingly.
3.) if you are tall (as we are) consider moving pillows to the other end of the bed.
4.) as much as we tried to save water, and planned on showering together (purely to save the water, of course (😜) we couldn’t. It is small.
None of these are deterrents whatsoever - just plan your stay knowing these things. We can not wait to come back and home you’ll have us (perhaps with kids next time. Or perhaps not!!!)
My wife and I stayed at the Treehouse in early August 2020. The Treehouse presents itself exactly as portrayed in the photos and covers the basics amazingly well.
The water filtration system: If you’ve stayed someplace with cistern water you’ll recall that the water tastes and smells awful. Not here – we filled our water bottles from the tap every day, never buying a bottle of water.
Kitchen supplies: We are foodies and had all cookware and utensils to comfortably prepare breakfasts and dinners at home. Provisions can be ordered ahead of time but we found everything we needed in Cruz Bay’s Starfish Market or picked up basics in Coral Bay at Calabash Market.
The WIFI: It was faster and more reliable than our access at home (the DC area).
The AC: Because the house is perched high on a hill and benefits from steady trade winds, we only used the air conditioner for sleeping at night, setting the temperature to shut off after a few hours.
Solar power with battery back-up: though we didn’t have any power outages while we were on the island, we’ve experienced them on other trips. Not worrying about a power failure was fantastic.
And most importantly, the screened in porch: This was the home’s best feature. We enjoyed coffee and sunrise from the hammock and spending hours every night listening to the night sounds and looking at the stars. Our doors stayed open all day so that we could enjoy the constant breeze. And we did all of this without getting one. single. bug bite.
The location is fantastic. The house sits on the slopes of Bordeaux Mountain overlooking Cruz Bay. The view goes on forever. It’s a short drive to the bars and restaurants in Coral Bay and convenient to most beaches. Access to the home is from a well-paved but very, very steep mountain road, with switchbacks. You MUST have a four-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance.
Things to consider: The modest bathroom is somewhat cramped. Anyone over 6’ will struggle around the toilet. Further, the head of the bed sits under the slope of the roof. A tall person could very easily find themselves banging their head getting out of bed. Most important, this home IS NOT for anyone who has any mobility issues at all. The stair leading to/from the house are very long and steep. The owners have thoughtfully placed night lights in all the right places, but keep in mind access to the bedroom is via a ladder.
We truly enjoyed our time in the Tree House and wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.
Amazing views from porch. The stairs are a bit of a workout but well worth it. The house had all the amenities that you would need. There are beach chairs, a cooler and beach umbrella. Will definitely want to come again.
This was a special trip for my husband and I! First trip without kids in MANY years and first time to St. John! What an adventure. The Tropical Tree house was perfect and Jake was very helpful and quick to respond.

Tropical Treehouse Treat
Treat yourself to a wonderful stay in this jewel box of a house. Everything you need for a great stay. Up and out of the way, a true island experience but right down the hill to all the fun that Coral Bay has to offer. Beautiful views. Laundry such a plus! pack light for less to carry up the many stairs (which are easy esp when you stop to drink in the view;). Easy drive to all beaches. We braved the ride to Lameshur - wow! so worth it. Quick to Maho. Thank you Jake and Sarah!

Great stay at Tropical Treehouse
We so enjoyed our stay at Jake and Sarah's property in beautiful Coral Bay. The unique property was immaculate and very accurately written up. The 68 steps kept us in shape,
The views were beautiful. Most of all Jake's responsiveness was so appreciated, it was reassuring knowing that he was available at anytime . We hope to return someday and would not hesitate to make this our vacation home again.
Thank you!!!!

Dream stay in St. John!!
This villa was perfectly nestled above Coral Bay. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a lovely care package! We loved spending mornings drinking coffee on the patio looking over the bay. The bed was very comfortable and all of the amenities were running smoothly and made us feel at home. Will definitely be recommending this spot to friends and family!! Could not have picked a better place to spend our time on the island. Thank you so much Jake and Sarah!

Home sweet island home!
We LOVED this place! It was so beautiful and comfortable. All you could ever need. We couldn't get enough of the outside porch, spent most of our time there when we were at the house. The breeze is great. The views are amazing!!! Waking up to that everyday is really something special. Jake and Sarah are great hosts. Loved It!!!! We give it 10 stars!
We had a very short window of when we could go on vacation and a short notice on top of that. Jake and Sarah just happened to have the dates we needed available, in a weeks notice. Tropical Tree House is the ultimate villa for a tropical vacation on an island that truly is paradise. It was off season which is better for us since we enjoy a peaceful trip. We're fairly adventurous so this was the perfect hideaway. Steps kept us in shape, very clean home, bed was super comfy, shower head was awesome, and the upstairs a/c cooled off the entire place in a short time to make it comfortable to turn off and go to sleep.
Great widely known and local reading material while swaying in the hammock. A TV if you want it...I spent early mornings on the porch listening to nature go off, gazing at Coral Bay and watching geckos and birds play in the trees. The screen porch is brilliant!
Super short distance to the north shore beaches and a totally awesome drive. Went to Maho Beach every day and others as well. Most days we were alone at Maho and that was truly amazing. Take advantage of everything they offer from kitchen needs to beach stuff, we used it all, lol...Thanks again, Jake and Sarah. We're super impressed with your villa and how accommodating it was.
You really will be spoiled on this island and in this villa. It's very romantic and a nature lovers dream!

Amazing getaway!
First, PLEASE KNOW THAT ST. JOHN HAS RECOVERED NICELY FROM THE HURRICANES OF 2017. Please do not let them discourage you from visiting this fantastic island.
The Treehouse property is an incredible getaway. It is nestled up in the mountain, with a great view and almost complete privacy. The house amenities cannot be beat, especially for island living. The owner was nice enough to provide beach chairs, a cooler, and an umbrella - all you need for a day at the beach. Their suggestions on rental cars and local attractions were also spot on. Coral Bay is still recovering, but almost everything is open and the grocery and local bar/restaurant scene is completely intact.
The house was perfect for 2 people! Having the A/C upstairs helped us sleep, but we spent all of our time on the balcony. THE HAMMOCK IS AMAZING!! We both took multiple naps in it and read books at a time.
The local liaison was very helpful getting us settled into the island and the owner was vigilant to ensure everything worked and we were happy. Having a Washer/Dryer on the property was an unexpected bonus, especially with beach clothes and towels.
There is a TV and WiFi, but truthfully we did not use either - we were enjoying our getaway too much.
We also wanted to put a few words here directly to the owner: thank you so much for helping us have such a great vacation! We wish you nothing but the best for you and your wonderful properties!!
