A Historic Legacy
Abercorn and York was built in 1853 by Captain Henry James Dickerson, a prominent Savannah figure. Born in Maryland in 1814, Dickerson came to Savannah at 19, beginning his career as a sailor before owning ships and pioneering large-scale stevedoring operations in the region. His contributions to Savannah’s maritime and economic development were significant, leaving a lasting legacy before his passing in 1883.
What is Stevedoring?
Stevedoring involves loading and unloading cargo from ships, a vital part of the shipping and logistics industry. Captain Dickerson played a key role in modernizing these operations during his time, helping to expand the bustling Port of Savannah.
