About this property

Beautifully furnished Studio with AC and WiFi in fantastic Salem

Designed with the traveling professional in mind, The Studio has a semi-private entrance through a shared (with the hosts) vestibule. Your entry has a keyless digital security lock. You'll step in to small entry that has a bench to sit and remove dirty boots or shoes and hooks to hang jackets or sweaters. Ahead you see a beautifully furnished living / eating area with two comfy reading / relaxing chairs, smart TV, lamps, and decor items that make it feel homey. Not fussy, but welcoming. You have a dining table and two chairs with additional folding chairs available to borrow if needed.

Your kitchenette has everything you need to prepare simple meals at home. We include small but important things like a set of cutlery, utensils, and sharp knives, dishes and glasses, pots and pans, cleaning supplies. You have an induction cooking plate, microwave, and multi-function toaster/oven. In the small but serviceable fridge we've even put a filled Britta pitcher to provide unlimited filtered water without the expense and waste of bottles. Yes, the freezer will hold a half-gallon of ice cream, a couple quick-to-fix meals, and some ice cubes and keep them all frozen.

Like a fresh cup of coffee to start your day? Ta-DAhhh! We've given you a French Press, teakettle (that heats quickly on the induction plate) and a selection of coffee and tea to get you started.

In your bathroom we provide full-sized shampoo, soap, and body wash in the shower, which includes a hand-held shower head. Plenty of towels and wash cloths, rug underfoot, good lighting and ventilation (including heat if needed) and shelves to hold your personal items complete your use of the bathroom.

You have a sleeping area partially separated from the living area. Your bed has a new Queen mattress that truly cradles you into one of the best sleeps of your life. Your dresser includes a small hanging area at the top. We've included window coverings that provide privacy and black-out when needed if you're a day-sleeper. Like to watch TV while lying in bed? No problem. Your TV atop the bookcase that divides the sitting / sleeping areas can easily be turned around to face the bed.

If you're a reader, we provide a supply of books. Need something specific for research or just to read - the public library is a 10 minute drive away. And the Friends of the Library have a large used-books store just inside the main entry of the library.

Back out in the vestibule, you'll find a secure place to receive packages. The common-use, no-charge laundry room is just to your left. That's right! No coin-operated anything here. We've even provided a selection of laundry products for your use, as well as access to more cleaning supplies and paper goods. And, there's an ironing board and iron tucked away in a wall cabinet right there for your use, along with broom, vacuum, dusting wands.

There are a number of outdoor places to sit with a cup of coffee or glass of wine or iced tea. The chairs in front of the house under the 50-year-old Japanese Maple (that changes her dress according to the season) is one of those places. It's a favorite of your hosts, who live in the main floor apartment and will welcome you to join them or graciously leave you to your reading or meditating, if that's your preference.

Salem Studio

I stayed in this studio while visiting my daughter and her family in Salem. This studio was perfect for one person. It was well furnished with a very comfortable queen-sized bed. The hosts, Nancy and Rick, were very pleasant, friendly, and accommodating. They made sure I had everything I needed. The neighborhood was nice and quiet and near grocery stores, restaurants, and shopping. I felt very safe while staying here. I plan to stay here again when visiting Salem.sized bed sized

About the host

Hosted by Nancy Layton

Host profile image
Your hosts, Rick Foster and Nancy Layton, are a retired couple who are still very actively engaged in life. From doing a complete renovation of their 1948-built home they now call Ewald House, to becoming active in local politics and community service organizations as volunteers, Nancy and Rick are simply present. They live in the main level apartment of Ewald House and their daughter, Laura, lives in The Cellar apartment.

While staying at Ewald House, if there is something you need that you don't find in The Studio, you have only to ask. If they can provide or do it, they will. With a smile!

Why they chose this property

This area of Salem is formerly a large agricultural area. The neighborhood where Ewald House is located was once the Ewald Fruit Farms where tons of Italian plums they call prunes were grown. In 1904 the Ewald family began selling the land into smaller "farmettes" of from 10 to 40 acres. Being a history-buff, Nancy was particularly eager to learn more of the history of their 1/3 acre property, a project she's still working on.

The neighborhood around Ewald House begins with a major commercial area. Commercial Street runs just a block from the property and leads north into the center of town, including the Capital area, and south toward I-5. Going away from Commercial, you'll find a middle-class, mixed-age population. You'll also find a lovely small park, Hillview, just a couple blocks up Ewald St, with a small playground if you have young children visiting and a walking circle to provide a gentle morning work-out or meditation walk. Ewald House is close enough to all the key places you're likely to need in town yet far enough away to feel peaceful and quiet.

What makes this property unique

Your hosts have gone much further than you'll find in most Studios in providing top-quality furnishings and amenities. They really have thought about what they would like to find upon walking into The Studio at Ewald House as a guest - and made sure The Studio met their expectations.
