Edgewater The Landing Coastal 3 bedroom apt. Private beach, life on the beach

Want a well appointed coastal space for your next getaway, with awesome sunrises and sunsets, nature calling (eagle nest or Osprey near the end of the pier)and a place to enjoy yourself? Year round, this is the place. No fighting the traffic or crowds, this lovely home is located on Holiday Island, a small residential community on the Albemarle Sound, 15 minutes away from the main roadway (Route 17 or also known as Ocean Highway). Located 30 minutes from Edenton and 30 minutes from Elizabeth City. 60-90 minutes from Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake (lots of military bases and museums) and the Outer Banks . There are many small towns close by to visit and explore.
The entire upstairs of the home has a fully equipped kitchen and sleeps 7 comfortably . There is a sleeper sofa which can sleep 2 more for an additional fee of 40 per night. There is a 70' flat screen in the great room. Cable TV Wireless internet is provided. Pandora and Netflix are already on the TV sets. Each bedroom has a TV and comfortable mattresses. Two bedrooms have a queen bed. The other bedroom has a twin over full bunk bed. There are two and a half bathrooms, one with soaker tub, the other with walk in shower. All linens and towels are provided. We also supply beach towels and complimentary coffee, tea, sugar, creamer along with some paper towels and toilet paper to tide you over until you get to the store. You can bring some firewood as there is a fire pit next to the beach and a picnic table right in the side yard or over the water to have your meals. There are beautiful views from Captain's Quarters overlooking the water (just 30 feet away). The Captain's Quarters has dining table for 4 on its' lovely deck looking over the Albemarle Sound. Enjoy the wonderful southern breeze coming from over the water on the pier while watching the pair of eagles, hawks, egrets and on rare occasions, dolphins. The exterior areas of the home are continuously improved with garden statuary, palm trees and other surprizes to create a mini resort atmosphere. The children will enjoy using the cove, picking up clams or crabs off of its sandy bottom. There is a crab pot provided and they can enjoy kayaking in the shallow cove. For the more adventurous, there are many canals, and you can spend a few hours exploring them in the kayaks. There are nine freshwater rivers that feed into this sound making it a great place to fish. So a boat would be really nice to have. The ramp is located in the community center about 3 minutes away. Fishing in the canals or out in the sound, you can catch catfish, flounder, croaker, large mouth bass, striped rockfish (striped bass), white perch, crappie, trout, speckled trout, puppy or slot drum (redfish), gray trout, spadefish, sheapshead, tautogs, bluefish, spanish mackerel. Anyone that has fished here has said that fishing was great.

There are also beach chairs, umbrellas, corn hole boards, life jackets, , paddles for the kayaks and fishing rod holder for the brown kayak.

A quick note and warning. Exactly as We Had Hoped

Our family take two mini vacations a year. This time we decided to do a non-tourist, non event kind of vacation. This property was perfect. The home was very tastefully decorated, and we enjoyed the host's personal art, which could be seen in every room. The layout of the home and the outside lent itself to a "stay home" kind of vacation, yet when someone needed space there was somewhere, inside or outside to go. The outside was absolutely what we needed. Fishing occurred every morning either from the dock or out in the canoe, and the kayaks went out about twice a day. Sitting outside having coffee in the morning is an absolute requirement. Thank you very much.

Perfect way to relax with the family before school starts!

This home is beautiful and well-equipped for all your needs. We loved sitting outside and watching the sunrise with our cups of coffee in hand. When the waters were calm, the kayaks were perfect for exploring...we were even brave enough to go through the culvert to make the circuit around the whole island! If you like birds, you'll love seeing the osprey, bald eagles, cormorants, woodpeckers, and so much more. A trip to the Outer Banks is just 1 1/2 hrs away and we highly recommend getting donuts at Duck Donuts and having dinner at the Black Pelican. We had two high schoolers and two college students with us and everyone enjoyed their stay. Thank you so much!

Can't say enough about this property ...

Nora and Alan have it all covered! This property was amazing and had everything you could ever want in a vacation rental ... Private beach, kayaks, bikes, long dock stretching over the water, fire pit, covered grill and games, and that's just outside (where we spent 80% of our time). Inside was just as impressive with modern appliances and amenities. In 5 days we only left the property once and that was to pick up food for grilling. Not enough stars to do this place justice! Can't wait to visit again.

Awesome!

I was one of 6 former college room-mates who met for an annual weekend getaway--we had an awesome time! The house was roomy with comfortable beds and a large dining room table where we enjoyed catching up. We came prepared to cook/steam our own seafood but the kitchen was well equipped to prepare most anything (and the owner even offered his steamer pot). Our BEST meal was eaten outside on the picnic table located halfway down the dock--nice breeze, beautiful sunset, and the relaxing sound of gentle waves washing below the pier. Our early risers enjoyed morning coffee in the sunroom overlooking the Sound. With swimming, kayaking, and snoozing on the hammock/beach chairs, there was plenty to do on the property but we couldn't resist a trip into Edenton. We rented paddleboards for $5/hr (a real bargain), sampled Orange-ades from the fountain at the local pharmacy, and feasted on the local chili, cornbread, and sandwiches at Nothin Fancy Cafe. (We also had great pizza at Tommy's before our arrival.) The owners have really tried to think of everything. They had lots of information about the local area and a binder to provide all the details needed to enjoy the property. Alan checked on us the first day and even returned on Saturday to give us a boat tour of the Sound and River! We could not have asked for a better weekend and will definitely consider a return trip!

Great Vacation Spot!

We just returned from a fantastic vacation. The house was even better than it looks in the pictures (and it looks incredible). We had so much fun crabbing and fishing from the pier, even though we didn't get any keepers. The house is furnished with everything needed for a great vacation. We really liked the location and the towns of Edenton and Hertford were lovely to visit. Thank you so much for making this such a memorable vacation.

Great secluded, quiet, picturesque location

The house is very clean and comfortable but the best part is the beach and the sound. The week we were there had excessive heat advisories every day, so doing any in the middle of the day was oppressive, but early mornings and evenings out back by the sound were the best. Although Edenton and Elizabeth City are only 30 minutes away, there isn't much to do unless you venture out about 1.5 hours or so. That said, the quiet and peacefulness of the home and the sound is just what our family needed on this vacation.

Relaxing waterfront home

We really enjoyed our time at this location. The house and property are just beautiful and relaxing. The photos here don't do the place justice. The town of Hertford and surrounding area are very sleepy. Limited restaurants nearby. But all and all this is a fantastic place for young and old to enjoy the beach. Only downside we could think of is-- there are no curtains in the upstairs bedrooms and the sun is very bright early in the morning. We recommend this property to anyone! We had 2 adults 60+, 2 adults 30+, and 2 kids (4 and 1).

Very relaxing and quiet stay!

We vacationed here with two other families and really enjoyed our stay. The home owners provided all the water toys we needed - kayaks, boogie boards, life jackets, floating chairs, etc. There were also plenty of beach and lawn chairs, umbrellas for the beach and even cup holders on the beach! We enjoyed checking the crab trap throughout our stay. We caught quite a few, but we released them! In addition, the house was well-equipped with modern amenities. No detail was left untouched. We intentionally left an inflatable floater behind for the future guests to enjoy since we don't have a need for it. We also hope the owners did not mind that we left the 1000-piece puzzle intact on the dining table! Our son put that together during our stay and we did not have the heart to dismantle it when we left!

Quiet Getaway

My family and I vacationed at this home at the end of June and had a very relaxing time. The home was exactly as it was pictured on the website, and the home owners were great to work with. My daughter (9) and I also took a class with Nora which she enjoyed immensely. The things we enjoyed most were the kayaks, catching the crabs and clams, and the sand area to play in. My teenage sons enjoyed the Pirates Den! We also drove to the Outer Banks one day and Virginia Beach another day. They were each about 90 minutes away. I would have given this place five stars if not for the construction for two mornings and workers wondering around he outside of the house. We would definitely return again.

The property was superb. Right on the water and the house was very comfortable.

It is close enough to drive to Elizabeth City, Edenton, Nags Head and Kitty Hawk easily. We enjoyed doing all of that. We walked around the neighborhood for exercise and it was safe and quiet. We sat out on the outside furniture which was also comfortable with plenty of places to sit if you have a larger group than ours staying there. The pictures of the property were very accurate. It was clean with all of the necessary furniture, household pots and pans and utensils that you need for being able to prepare your own meals. There was also recreation equipment galore so you would not have to bring much of that with you...there were bikes and kayaks easily accessible. The owners stopped by to welcome us and told us to call them if we needed anything which we didn't because it was already provided. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone and we would definitely enjoy coming back if we are in the area again in the future.

Home away from home

This was a girls weekend for the annual NC Coastal Cycling event that was held in Edenton and I lucked into renting this property for the 3 day weekend. To say I was blown away with the location and house is an understatement. The property was fully stocked with everything from coffee packs to shampoo, linens to towels. Unfortunately, we did not have an opportunity to take full advantage of all the amenities like the kayaks since we spent all day cycling and came "home" to eat and sleep. We saw beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the water and enjoyed relaxing on the back porch after a long day of cycling. The cottage was clean and well kept and had beautiful and comfortable furnishings. I would highly recommend checking this lovely property out and hope I can come back when I can enjoy all it has to offer. The owners were very easy to work with and allowed us some leave-way on check out so we could cycle that morning and come back to shower before hitting the road home! A+++++ owners and property! THANKS for making my first but not last visit to the area a memorable one!

Relaxing getaway, beautiful sound views

My family enjoyed a week at this relaxing cottage on the sound. Every amenity you could think of is available from outside sports (kayaks, cornhole, lifejackets, horseshoe, seating and hammocks) to inside amenities (cooking utensils and entertainment). The cottage is very clean and very well-kept. We were lucky to meet the owners and they take pride in keeping everything new and well-functioning (we were the first to use the brand new gas grill). My 3 young boys loved roaming around outside and playing in the Sound and on the pier. It is a super safe water location - the water barely reached my 10 year old's knees (and that was going almost to the end of the pier). They also found enough clams to feed us dinner for 2 nights. If you are looking for a low-key location to spend quality time and make wholesome memories - this is the place. We also took advantage of two of the local golf courses and they were superb. We ate most meals at home but did enjoy dinner at a few very good restaurants (namely Patricia's Grille which is an excellent French restaurant in an historic farmhouse - about 10 minutes from the house). Nora even left the boys an easter basket that they were thrilled to find as soon as we arrived. I can't wait to bring the boys back.

Most Tranqil Place on Earth!

This was an absolutely amazing visit. Nora and Alan are such wonderful people. My children and I came to have some time together is a beautiful place and also held my daughter's wedding shower at the house. The house has plenty of space for a family and lots of room and areas outside to host a lovely get together. The views are spectacular and the cottage gave us such a warm and welcome feel. Meeting Nora and Alan was an added blessing. My favorite time was in the morning standing outside, sipping my morning coffee and just taking in the quiet and amazing view. It is honestly the most tranquil place on earth. I was so sad to ever have to leave. My family and I will definitely make it a must to visit each year. Thanks again Nora and Alan. Hope to see you soon!

BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT FOR COUPLES OR FAMILIES

What a wonderful 20th anniversary trip!! Thank you to Nora and Alan for allowing us to stay in their beautiful home and for the thoughtful card and bottle of wine that awaited us. The house was adorable and the views spectacular! Although a 3 bedroom with plenty of space for a family, it was also the perfect size for a romantic getaway for 2. We loved the décor and the cottage feel. The only bad part of our stay was having to leave. Hoping to return next summer with our 3 boys who would absolutely love it...Or maybe just another romantic trip for mom and dad!!!

Peace and quiet

We were looking for a quiet place to spend a weekend with friends. Edgewater was perfect. It was very clean, and had everything that you need to enjoy yourself. The outdoor amenities were terrific..... from the fishing dock to the kayaks. I never thought that I would be able to get in a kayak, but guess what!!! The cove was the perfect place to learn. We had the pleasure of meeting Alan and Nora. They were excellent hosts, and were able to suggest places to see locally. We would certainly enjoy another visit to such a special place.

BEDBUGS

We have a yearly family vacation and choose a different place to go every year. It's been great--until this year. The place looked fine at first glance, but I soon noticed it was not very clean. Then I woke up covered in nasty itchy welts. I could tell my room had been furnished with various secondhand finds, including a filthy pillow. Skin crawling, I inspected my bed. See what I saw below. I knew it was disgusting but was not sure it was bedbugs as I had no prior experience of them, thank God, but after my sister was bitten, we contacted the owners and they confirmed in writing that the place was indeed infested. My suitcase remains encased in a plastic bag because I am terrified of infesting my home. We received no compensation and the owners rudely insinuated that we brought the bugs. Look at the bed frame. I think not. This is the last place on Earth I would ever stay again. I should have posted sooner. My sister's bites didn't manifest until she got home. Apparently that is a bedbug thing. We have been waiting for the owners to step up and do the right thing about their filthy infested property so as not to harm their business, but they seem to think they have gotten away with it. PERFECT

My three girlfriends and I planned our trip only 3 weeks before our trip and we were lucky enough to find this beautiful home. We have stayed at dozens of homes on the OBX, many of them very expensive, but this home by far was our favorite. We wouldn't have changed a thing. The decor was absolutely beautiful, every possible amenity you could ask for. There were flat screens in all the rooms, great music and books were available and every possible kitchen appliance you could ask for. But the landscaping and the views were absolutely magnificent. We have found our Shangri-la no need to ever return to the OBX.

Amazing

Wonderful weekend with old friends in a beautiful home. Nora & Alan have all the bases covered. We planned on going to the banks for a day, but found no need as everything we needed was in our own backyard! We are already planning another visit to Edgewater and also hope to take some art & music lessons with Nora. Wanted to keep the place a secret, but they deserve a great review! Kudos, Nora & Alan, and many many thanks!

Simply the best!

I've never written a review before, but this place must be talked about. We had a wonderful (35 anniversary) week with one of our adult children, my sister and one of her teenage grand daughters. We are in love with this place! Walk right out your door, into a float or kayak or with your fishing pole. The home is beautiful, the artwork (by Nora one the owners) is incredible and the owners were so thoughtful in big & small ways. They have any equipment you need for cooking or playing on the water to small little night lights all through the house. Our only comments for less than perfect is that if our grandsons had come we would have all been on edge as the sand beach bulkhead drops right off into the water. We would have had to keep eyes on them constantly. Don't have an answer,as any kind of barrier would take away from the beach area. Do not miss this place! We will be back!!

The Best place ever!!!

It's not our first time, and will not be the last. Beautifull update house with everything you need and more. For us , this place is perfect to really share quality time with your love ones, totally private, a place where everyone forget about texting and computers.... Even if the connection with technology works perfect , the place invite you to enjoy the outdoor from the very begining of your arrival , kayaking , biking in the little streets, playing in the water , tanning , reading under a umbrella, cooking BBQ and more, or just relaxing.Absolutely positive for the soul !!!

Family Time

This was our 2nd stay - and we loved it just as much as the 1st. We didn't think the place could get better but the owners proved us wrong with many new things! My favorite new thing was the hammock but the bikes were a close 2nd. The sandy beach was great too and our 2 youngest daughters spent lots of time playing there. Once again our 5 children (ages 18 to 5) LOVED staying here. Many hours were spent swimming, kayaking & crabbing in the Sound. Our favorite thing about this place remains the dock - hands down. My husband & I spent lots of time in the mornings/evenings on the dock taking in the beautiful sight of the Sound and all it's features & creatures. Once again we saw Eagles, Ospreys, geese, ducks & seagulls. This place is a gem and we hope to stay again soon.

About the host

Hosted by Nora Crouch

Host profile image
We cherish the tranquility of water and nature. Our Virginia Beach home boasted views of a stunning reservoir teeming with wildlife. For retirement, we dreamed of a smaller, similar home on the intra-coastal waterway within a peaceful community. We ended up rebuilding the home into 4000 sq foot home instead. We envisioned a 'rush hour' so calm that one might only hear a golf cart or a solitary car if they listened closely. I believe we have achieved that dream.

Since 2013, we've made our retreat available to travelers throughout the year.

Why they chose this property

In 2012, my husband and I stumbled upon Holiday Island during a trip. We were captivated by the home's view and its prime location between two charming towns, Edenton and Elizabeth City. We purchased the property and embarked on transforming it into our dream retirement resort. Our friends, intrigued by our venture, inquired about renting it for weekends or weeks. Consequently, we opened it to guests year-round starting in early 2013. Holiday Island isn't a typical tourist spot; it's a serene place to unwind, stroll, or enjoy a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine). We constructed a 181-foot pier featuring a 16x24 platform with a picnic table at its center. Our boat is moored there on a lift. On clear days, guests can join us for a boat ride on the country's largest freshwater sound. We also acquired the adjacent lot, adding 150 feet of private space. The pier, nestled within a cove, has water depths ranging from 8 to 24 inches near the bulkhead and deepens by approximately 12 inches towards the end. Beyond the cove, the depth reaches 5 feet and extends to 15-20 feet further out. The cove's sandy bottom, dotted with seagrass, is perfect for launching provided kayaks or for children to frolic in. The extra lot allowed us to install a beach, areas for cornhole, bocce, or croquet, and a second pergola amidst a palm tree haven. Additionally, we erected a stunning barn on this lot, which now accommodates an art studio and a music studio.

What makes this property unique

Just a 15-minute journey from the island, you'll find the town of Hertford, chartered in 1758, which is the seventh oldest town in North Carolina. This charming town boasts an old-fashioned pharmacy with a soda fountain counter, an art gallery, a coffee shop, antique and thrift stores, —perfect for a rainy day activity.

Adjacent to Holiday Island is Albemarle Plantation, where the public is invited to enjoy dining in their splendid clubhouse and grill. The food is excellent, and the welcoming atmosphere is consistent. Additional details about dining options and activities can be found in the welcome package.

The region is rich in history, with Edenton founded on November 6, 1712, and Elizabeth City in 1793. The Outer Banks, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Virginia Beach, and many other destinations are just an hour to an hour and a half's drive away. Day trips to the ocean are a great way to avoid the traffic and high costs associated with staying there. The local fishing is superb, and boating adds to the enjoyment of the area. Six kayaks are available on the property, and guests are welcome to bring their own boats to launch from the island's boat ramp. During the summer, the pier maintains a water level of about 16-30 inches, allowing you to dock your boat or personal watercraft during the day.
