Great stay

We loved the location of this home. Check-in was easy and the host stayed in contact throughout our month-long stay. She was very responsive and accommodating. The home was nice and we appreciated the AC as it was very humid in May/June.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Many positives! Clean, comfy beds, and nice touches like water bottles, fresh coffee. Charming and historic cottage. It appeared at first that there was good communication, in fact a bit much! However, renter be aware, the second bedroom (child size twin beds) and bathroom are in an attic room only reachable via very steep set of stairs; furnace didn’t work, temperature in cottage was in 50’s for first day and night and part of second day, until owner brought a heater. Kitchen sparsely provisioned, only 2 pots, both huge.Biggest issue: unfortunately our car windshield was smashed by a large rotting branch falling from a tree. We were directed to park in a specified spot on the street; a huge tree hangs over that spot, with much evidence of rotting branches. We lost 2 days of our vacation having to deal with getting repairs, plus hundreds of dollars to replace the windshield and wipers. We were so very disappointed in the response from owner, basically saying not her responsibility, tree is on city property. For the remainder of our stay, we received no response to any messages we sent.We still left the place in excellent condition nevertheless.

Lovely house in the perfect neighborhood!

I had the most wonderful stay in Wilmington! The house is located in a beautiful neighborhood, with amazing and friendly neighbors. Very easy to walk anywhere, and plenty of grocery, and other stores nearby. The home is comfortable, and the owner Christine is so friendly and easy to communicate with! Everything was clean and ready for my arrival. It's street parking, but I never had an issue finding a parking space directly in front of the house. I would absolutely recommend this stay for anyone looking to spend a little time in Wilmington and look forward to another stay if I find myself in the area. Thank you!

Quaint, simple, convenient

Enjoyed my stay a lot. It was very convenient to downtown and easy to get to other shopping areas too. It was especially easy for my little dog to access the fenced backyard and porch. The only thing I would add is a wall clock in the kitchen, since I am used to that! And hand rail or support in shower for getting in and out of the shower.

Where do I begin....

We loved staying at C. Parker Cottage. Everything about it was lovely & fun. Newly restored, it has dark, wide-plank floors cool under bare feet. Artsy sparkly light fixtures. Porches with shade & sun. Great TV & all the conveniences for tech & kitchen. Location is excellent for town, walks, & an easy drive to all 3 main beaches, Greenfield Park, Arlie Garden, etc. I can't wait to stay here again!

Great place, but one significant negative

Great location, close to downtown, really nice neighborhood for walking. The house is nicely equipped- everything works pretty well. Chris is a responsive owner and was great to work with. Our only complaint, and it’s a big one depending on when you stay, is the house is VERY poorly insulated. We were there during a particularly cold stretch in January and even with the heat blasting, we were waking up to indoor temperatures in the mid 50’s to low 60’s. All the heat went upstairs and it was really cold on the first floor, really hot upstairs. This wouldn’t be an issue for most of the year - not sure how it would be in the summer. But if you’re planning a winter stay, bring enough clothes to dress warmly inside. -Ray

Know what you are getting when you rent this home

I stayed here for almost 5 weeks during a job transfer until I closed on my home. Positives - location is great, 10-15 min walk to downtown and riverfront. Neighbors are very friendly. House is clean with a great washer/dryer.Negatives - the house just does not heat up. If the outside temperature is below 45 degrees, the warmest the house will get is 64 -66 degrees. I spent 150 on space heaters. The floors have been coated with something and are very slick. I brought two small, elderly dogs and ended up purchasing three runners from Target so my dogs could walk on the floors. Be careful on the stairs. My little dog fell down the slippery stairs within 5 minutes of arriving at the home and thought she needed a 17,000 spine surgery. I never went up the stairs again, no need. I would say the worse part of the stay was the attitude of the owner. When I explained how cold it was in the house, she advised me to wear long underwear. I wear suits and high heels to work daily. The circuit breaker tripped and she accused me of it being from my space heaters. No reply in two hours so a neighbor came over and got electricity on. The owner chastised me for not calling her which I had and I had left a message.

The perfect neighborhood

I love the simplicity of the house. It is perfect for what I wanted and needed. An older home restored without losing any of the old character. The location could not have been better. A short walk to all the action of this hidden gem of a city. Even closer is Castle St with its small shops, INCREDIBLE yoga studio, CBD bar that hosts open mic on Thursday which is a must attend. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. Neighbors all say hello as they walk their dogs. The trees and flowers are old and full of life. The beach is a 30min drive. If that’s your goal my advice for those with a 4x4 go to Ft Fisher and use the drive on beach. Well worth the time and effort. I’m glad to recommend this house even tho selfishly I want it to myself.

Good house and host, but read full review.

This is going to be a long review that I recommend you read the full thing. Even with the not so good things, it’s still hard to recommend against the house. I actually feel bad writing them, but I think people should know. The good: To start, the house is exactly as picured/described. It’s in a safe, beautiful neighborhood that is super walkable and very close to downtown. It’s also a really peaceful neighborhood and the neighbors are lovely. Parking was on the street and I didn’t have any issues finding space right in front of the house for over a month. To get to Wrightsville Beach, it’s an easy 15-20 min drive. Topsail is about an hour away (and totally worth the visit if you have time). Christine, the host, is great. She is super responsive to any needs and has really great tips about places to go/things to do. The rest: Not sure how many people know this before they visit Wilmington, but it has toxic water. Definitely look it up for more info. With that said, there isn’t a water filtration system under the kitchen sink (reverse osmosis filters are best to remove these chemicals). Maybe not a huge deal for a weekend, but I was there a bit over a month. I don’t think it’s something hosts are required to do by law. So, it might be a rare thing for vacation homes in Wilmington, but don’t drink the tap water or brush your teeth/wash your face with it. This is a really very personal preference, but the upstairs bedroom does not have a door. I have a cat and generally close doors to any room that I don’t want her in…especially in vacation homes. I, unfortunately, couldn’t keep her out of that room. Once she went up, I barely saw her again. Which leads to the next issue, my cat (who is an indoor only/only pet) got fleas while we were there. Since she rarely came downstairs/would hide if I went up, I didn’t notice she had fleas until we got back to our own home. I let Christine know on 10/25/21, and she said she is going to treat for them.

Wonderful little cottage

Lockbox check in super easy. Cottage was immaculate. Everything you need is there and so much more storage than it seems at first. Two closets in each bedroom and plenty of empty shelves/cabinets in kitchen. Sheets and towels are nice. Kitchen set up is very basic - nothing gourmet - but we found a sharp knife and plenty of dishes and pots and pans that worked for all our cooking. Loved having my dog and we walked the downtown neighborhoods every day. It was so fun and we met so many amazing friendly people. Walked to the Riverwalk downtown for dinner or sometimes after dinner just for the view or gelato! Best gelato since I was in Italy. Christine was terrific and even helped us in our home search as we are looking to move to Wilmington. Hope we get to stay here again or definitely would have friends stay here when we live in Wilmington. Thanks again, Christine!!

A lovely neighborhood respite

This property, with its history as the antique Parker Cottage in tact, was perfect for the two of us as we worked “from home” during our two-week stay. The owner and manager were responsive, and the rules and features, accommodating. The recent convenience updates (dishwasher, full bathrooms, etc.) were truly appreciated. Plus, oh...the wraparound porch in front and another in the back! We enjoyed them all. Thank you, Chris. We’ll be back!

The porch with the rockers was so relaxing. When not busy I sat there and read books. It is close to everything and well decorated by the owner. Would love to stay again.

Clean, cozy, and quaint house in historic neighborhood

Christine's house was clean and efficient for all of our needs. The location was great and she even called to make sure we did not lose our parking spot due to the 4th of July crowds. We would definitely stay again and probably return in cooler weather. The A/C kept up with the heat especially for an older home. This house felt like home away from home and met all of our needs. There were even beach chairs for use although most beaches are about 25 minutes or more drive away. It was worth staying here away from the beach crowd. The walk to the Riverfront is very accessable and we felt safe in the downtown area.

About the host

Host profile image
I have spent the last 35 years restoring historic houses in Wilmington, so I have worked hard which I think has given me an appreciation for my time 'not on the job'. I love going to the beach early, meeting friends with coffee, and soaking it in before the day begins. I am involved with a Contra-Dance group and I call dances. I am a fan of old-time fiddle and blue-grass. I have traveled all over the world--China, Peru, Crete--and enjoy living near the water and kayaking, sitting on my porch, and reading--whatever.
As a host, I hope I am accommodating, but distant in a way that assures privacy and still makes my guests feel welcome.

Why they chose this property

This property is walking distant to all the downtown restaurants and live theater.
