This is Wellfleet urban living at its best. Walk out of the Peake House front yard and take a right and you are four houses from Mac's Shack; take a left and you're a half dozen houses from the Town Pier. Peake House itself is part of a larger property that abuts Wellfleet's Commercial street on one side and Duck Creek down on the water.

Close to an array of ponds and ocean beaches. Perfect for active aesthetes who hate the hassle of driving. Ideal for kayakers, chefs, bikers, artists & writers and anyone looking for the peace, relaxation and fun of a Wellfleet visit. The best location in Wellfleet. We have just recently begun renting this apartment for seasonal stays.

Peake House features sunrise views from the kitchen and living area out towards Duck Creek. The house was built nearly years ago by whaler merchant Samuel Peake. This Commercial Street house is halfway between the town pier and Mac's Shack. Walk to everything from this beautifully & sensitively renovated second story modern flat with original wide pumpkin pine plank wooden floors, gourmet kitchen with all new appliances, brand new bathroom, Algerian tile accents and original works of art. Never before rented seasonally, this quiet apartment combines the charm of the old and the convenience of the new in a quiet home with views to Duck Creek and the surrounding neighborhood. You don't need a car if you stay in Peake House. Walk to Mayo Beach, the town pier, Wellfleet village center and a number of renowned restaurants. Bring your bicycles and ride to town beaches and everything Wellfleet has to offer.

The best-located rental in Wellfleet for visitors and residents needing temporary accommodations who want to enjoy the town, the bay and the beach without the hassle of driving. In the heart of Wellfleet Center Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Great for kayakers, Peake House is steps from Duck Creek itself, with peekaboo waterviews from the drive, from the shared deck and from the living room and kitchen.

Peake house is next to the Moorings and across the street from the Holden Inn, four houses from Mac's Shack on one side and a half dozen houses from the Town Pier and the numerous dining options there and on and around Mayo's Beach. Walk to Wellfleet's many galleries, Uncle Tim's Bridge, and any other in-town location. Experience sunsets from the pier, food from any of many options, and the Wellfleet Harbor Stage, a three-minute walk away. You don't need a car if you stay at Peake House.

Peake House has a shared deck for outside dining. There's a coin-operated laundry in the basement. Guests may put their kayaks in on Duck Creek behind Peake House on the same property.

We are available to answer your questions if you need assistance or advice.

There is parking available for up to two vehicles with this apartment. Extra cars must park at the town pier a short walk from Peake House. Peake House is a five minute walk from the nearest Wellfleet bus stop, with direct bus service to Provincetown, Orleans, Hyannis on to New York, Providence, or Boston. Cyclists can arrive to Peake House by taking the Cape Cod Rail Trail to its Wellfleet terminus and biking via Ocean View Drive to Wellfleet center.

Duck Creek Week

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Awesome location close to town and within easy walking to the marina and public beach. Nice view and breezes from nearby Duck Creek. Easy access to and quick response from the property owner who shared helpful tips for making the most of our week on Cape Cod.

Cape Cod = Wellfleet

Chased out by Hurricane Lee but otherwise very good week. Good location with nice view of Duck Creek area. Probably best view of the 5 apts in main house. Mgr super-attentive. Nice layout of apt, very clean. Would definitely consider staying again.

Great getaway

Comfortable space for a couple. Lovely apartment and view! Easy walk to groceries/restaurants and Mayo Beach. We drove to many different nearby swimming beaches—so many to choose from (after paying for resident parking permit). The bedroom felt rather dusty. We assumed there would be beach towels (we had to buy some) and expected higher-quality bath towels for the price, but we would definitely stay here again.

Lovely apartment

Immaculate, well-appointed apartment with all the amenities and none of the clutter. Inviting space with cool, eclectic artwork. I misplaced my key the second night I was there and the on-site property manager, Steve, had to leave work to come give me a spare. He could not have been nicer or more gracious, which I greatly appreciated. Beautiful place in a beautiful town!

Charming, bright, and comfortable

Sweet, recently renovated apartment in a vintage house, perfect for a couple or single. It's the only residence on the 2nd floor, very private. Lots of windows, a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable bed, nice shower. Charming artwork on the walls. There are two single futon "couches" in the living area, comfortable for lounging and could sleep two children. Window air conditioner is noisy, but we only needed it on the hot day we arrived. You can walk to everything in Wellfleet from here--including the market, if you want to stock the fridge. If you sit on the porch to read you might notice some traffic on Commercial Street, but it's quiet at night, not a problem. Really a lovely spot!

Beautiful rental in the perfect location!

We loved our Wellfleet stay at this property! The 2nd floor space means gorgeous views of the bay while from your exquisitely decorated living room window. The hosts were helpful and lovely. We couldn't have asked for a better stay.

Best for a launching pad only

The apartment is centrally located, but uncomfortable. The outdoor spaces are shared and were busy when we were there. The bed and couches are uncomfortable. It wasn't ready on time (90 minutes late) and insufficiently cleaned. Nice historic home, but we left early even though we love Wellfleet.

Perfect!

What an amazing place ! Walking distance to a lot of restaurants and bars. The pictures do not do this place justice. Eva was so accommodating. Her sister Sarah lives on the property as well as her mother and father we talked to them all they really made our trip. You can’t beat the view from the back yard!!! We already want to go back again.

Fit our needs perfectly

I gave the Peake House, second floor apartment five stars for a few reasons the first of which being that it perfectly met our expectations for the weekend we had planned. To explain, we are very familiar with Wellfleet and we were there for a four night weekend to attend a wedding. We wanted some space (bigger than a motel room) and a good location that we could comfortably retreat to from the multiple festivities of the wedding weekend. The apartment itself was quaint, clean and comfortable. Ample room for two people. The kitchen was well equipped. Full sized refrigerator. Nice, full size stove. Plenty of counter space with a good size dining counter (there is no dining table). The bathroom had plenty of room for our things and a good shower (no tub). The bedroom was good sized, the bed was comfortable and there was plenty of room for us to unpack our clothes. This is not a “view” rental per se but you could see the tidal creek behind the property from the living room and kitchen windows. You have access to the property and we spent some peaceful morning time sitting in very comfortable lawn furniture looking out on Duck Creek in the properties back yard. The front porch on Commercial St. is a great spot to sit and watch folks go by. It’s an easy walk to a number of restaurants in the village as well as the Wellfleet Market, liquor store, harbor and bay beach. Sara, the proprietor, was helpful but unobtrusive. A special, unexpected treat; the apartment was full of great art, much of which was created by Sara’s mom. This is a different Wellfleet experience from renting a cottage but the convenient location in the village was an immersive and enjoyable experience.

About the host

Host profile image
Our family has a long history with Wellfleet beginning with a bicycle ride my father took through Wellfleet from Hartford Connecticut all the way to Provincetown on a heavy iron bicycle before the Second World War on what was then a considerably more bucolic Route Six. Our mother, some of whose works decorate the house, began painting and sketching in Wellfleet seventy years ago. While our presence in Wellfleet has waxed and waned, we've always maintained a close connection here, particularly with Duck Creek, where we've been returning annually since the nineteen seventies. Our parents have lived full time in Wellfleet for decades now, and this property, a former rooming house where generations of Wellfleetians have lived at one time or another, belongs to them. Both parents, now in their nineties, live nearby in another house on Duck Creek, where our father still writes and our mother still paints and sketches when the mood strikes.

Why they chose this property

Wellfleet's Commercial Street meanders along Duck Creek and ends at the town pier. One of Wellfleet's older homes, Peake House was built by whale oil merchant Samuel Peake in 1825 on Duck Creek and is remarkably well-preserved despite its colorful history.

For decades a boarding house for Wellfleet locals and fishermen, Peake House has been progressively restored and carefully updated in recent years and now houses the art collection of Evarts Cecil Erickson, a writer and researcher, and Janet Doub Erickson, a New England graphic artist and author. Stroll down to Uncle Tim's Bridge to watch the tide come in, gallery-hop, or walk to the library for a lecture or a book. Convenient biking in every direction. Convenient kayak Duck Creek put-in on the property for guest use. Abundant vistas for artists to sketch. The waterfront behind the house was the subject of a two-page National Geographic centerfold in the nineteen seventies.

What makes this property unique

Peake House is superbly situated for kayakers (you can put in behind the house, and easily store your kayaks there as well), bikers (both off-road and on-road bike trails are easily accessible), sailors docked in the harbor (we're less than a quarter of a mile from the town pier), visiting artists (you can sketch from the deck, from the water front, or virtually from anywhere you look!), writers (we have good wifi), and the indolent (there's always the front porch). Runners will enjoy the three mile run to the oceanside, or the two-and-a-half miles to the Herring River Gut. Hikers can leave for Great Island by foot from Peake house, or bike to the Gut and leave their bikes there to continue their journey on foot.

Peake House is a short walk or bike ride from Wellfleet Marketplace, so you needn't bring anything even if you're planning to cook; Wellfleet Marketplace is well-stocked. The library and other Wellfleet amenities are also a short walk or bike ride away.

Wellfleet town beaches and ponds require a beach sticker in season. Your guest receipt is proof of residency that you will need to purchase the sticker. Please see the town website for additional information and pricing.
