About this property

Secluded Mountain Retreat on 200+ Acres - Hiking on-site. National Forest

You deserve a secluded restful vacation in the Smoky Mountains. This is the perfect site for family reunions or groups of friends to gather! Enjoy nature and all it has to offer deep in the Appalachian Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee, 22 miles east of Vonore & Tellico Plains in the vast Citico Wilderness Area. Note: Parties over 12 MUST add-on the additional Bunkhouse. (see Amenities)

Now with StarLink WiFi!! The Cottage at Hemlock Grove, located only 50 minutes from I-75 or the Knoxville Airport, tucks you away in extreme privacy in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Located in a private hollow on 200+ acres you can immerse your senses in all that Nature has to offer. Spend days exploring streams, old growth forests, an old mountaineer homestead, and expansive, unspoiled views after hiking to a private mountain top ridge. This is a true Tennessee mountain experience without roughing it! This property is not suitable for bikers due to the road grades in and out, gravel road and driveway, unless you are very very skilled.
For its remoteness, this vacation cottage is surprisingly close to many attractions. Bring your kayaks or boat and enjoy Citico Creek and Tellico and Chilhowee Lakes. Boat ramps are just a few miles away. Abundant trout run in gorgeous, rushing, Citico Creek just minutes away. The Citico forest service road runs along the creek for twenty magnificent miles through the Cherokee National Forest to the breathtaking Cherohala Skyway (Hwy 165) and Indian Boundary Lake.

Thirteen trails, within the National Forest, totaling 57.4 miles provide access to much of Citico Creek Wilderness. For a fun day trip, Dollywood and the other attractions of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are less than two scenic hours away (76 miles). Scenic drive enthusiasts will love the proximity to the 'tail of the dragon' or Highway 129 to Deal's Gap, NC.

The Cottage & Bunkhouse are not generally available January-March due to water pipe freeze potential and wet conditions.

Free unlimited long distance calling from our land line phone.

Great property in the East Tennessee Mountains

This is a great property in the Tennessee mountains. Plenty of near by trails and a little over an hour to Parts of the Smokey Mountain National Park. Our group of 11 loved it. Lee is a accommodating hoist and personally showed us some of the on-site trails. Look forward to another visit.

Great, Remote Mountain Vacation

Hemlock Grove is an amazing property and Lee is an awesome property owner. This is the perfect place for families with children who want to get away from it all. We had a great time hiking the private trails, fishing in the pond, and playing in the small stream right behind the house. Just remember this is as remote as you will find in Tennessee so be prepared, flexible, and adaptable. We had a small issue while there; Lee was very responsive and attentive. A great place that we hope to visit again.

Beautiful location in the mountains

We rented this property for a family reunion and found it to be even better than expected. It was unusually cold for TN the week we were there but we were toasty warm with the indoor and outdoor wood fireplaces. It was great to have the bunkhouse so the kids could have a space for themselves. The house is fully equipped with everything you could need for cooking and comfort. It is also very clean and well maintained. Lee and Pat are generous and gracious hosts and customer service is exceptional. We loved the beautiful hiking trails right on the property and the kids had a blast with a fort building contest. When they got too cold to play outside they had fun with the pool table, Wii, movies and board games. We hope to be back again one day!

Best cabin ever!

We have been spending a week or two at the mountains pretty much every year since the kids were small. Since the kids are grown now and have children of their own, it becomes difficult to find a cabin that will fit us all. This cabin not only had room for us all but was one of the top three of all we have stayed at. The owners came by the day after our arrival to welcome us and point out trails, local spots to visit, and some history of the area. There was something for everyone in a group of 13 who’s ages ranged from 4 to 79 years of age. Many interesting hikes on the property and is close to many interesting places to visit. I would highly recommend this cabin and hope to return again. Earl Summers

Awesome location! Beautiful scenery!

Our stay at this property was very nice. We had 9 adults and 7 children in our group. We did purchase the bunkhouse to have additional space. The teenagers loved hanging out in the bunkhouse! The house offered great space & amenities. We felt very at home. The owners came out the next day to greet us and give us info and tips about the area. We were close to many hiking trails & fishing areas. The closest store is a 40 min drive so it would be wise to stop on the way in and get as much as you need for your stay. I honestly feel like the pictures on the site don’t do the house justice! It is just so beautiful & to me it looks so much better in person! We really enjoyed spending time together at this property and would stay here again!

Love the secluded location!

This location was perfect for our mother’s surprise 80th birthday party. Our mother grew up in the mountains and this beautiful secluded location made for the perfect place to have a small family gathering for her 80th birthday. The home was very clean and comfortable and upon arrival I found a lovely gift basket to greet me. Our hosts welcomed suggestions and communicated well to ensure that we had no problems finding Hemlock Grove though it is tucked away in the mountains. The hiking trails and history of the area made for captivating days when we weren’t party planning. The walk to the pond at Barewood Cabin and fishing with the kids at the pond was also quite enjoyable. We found everything we needed in the kitchen, even a crock pot! Hemlock Grove is a wonderful place to spend with your family and reconnect. Thanks to our hosts Lee and Patrick! We had a wonderful time at Hemlock Grove!

Amazing!

It's difficult to fully express how wonderful this property is. My family has stayed at a number of rural VRBO rentals over the years (it's our normal vacation practice), and this one was the best by far! The house is very well maintained and felt spacious to our family of six. We stayed for four weeks and hardly left the property at all except for church on Sundays and garbage/grocery runs. There was so much to do! We hiked every day, picked wild blackberries, saw deer, wild pigs and other wildlife creatures, fished in the pond, grilled on the back deck, soaked in the hot tub, read books on the front porch and played cards every night at the dining room table. Lee does an amazing job maintaining the trails and whole property and is a great host. Such a beautiful and peaceful and enjoyable place! This house will hold a special place in our family memories, and I can only hope that we will be able to make the drive from Texas again one day.

Very nice home, mostly all new inside, with classical furniture!

Went to the home not knowing what to expect as it was our first rental outside of MI. The house and surrounding area was better, much better than we were expecting! The house is like new inside and has a tonne of extras that made the stay all the better. We got to meet "Lee" one of the owners, the morning we arrived and was a very friendly down to earth guy. Spent a week there with 4 of our kids and had a great time exploring not only the trails right there on the property, but also scenic trails and attractions in the immediate area. There was more to do around this place than we had time to see, and the colors were just starting. Landscape was just beautiful all over, where ever we went. The house was quiet, warm and very practical for the visit we had there. Appliances all top notch and made this stay very easy. The outside was well kept, and very neat! The house was very clean when we arrived and the beds were very comfortable. Was just a very nice overall experience, and enjoyable time at the home! Thanks again Lee and Patrick, A. H. family GR MI

Perfect mountain getaway for Large Groups

There were 15 in our party and the accommodations with the bunkhouse were perfect with beds to spare. The location is beautiful! As it is off the beaten path, we hauled a trailer loaded with enough food for our stay. We had 9 children who loved being there even without wifi and cell service! 3 of them were teenagers! We spent most of our time hiking and exploring the mountains surrounding us. The kids waded in pretty streams and the creek behind the main house. It was a memory of a lifetime, being with family minus the "world". We did things we do not take time for due to work and life responsibilities. We played games with the kids, told stories around the fire and made smores. Each child ranging from 4 to 17 said it was the best vacation ever! They said everything we did was good but doing it as a family was best! We want to go back in the Spring or Summer we know it will be beautiful. I highly recommend Hemlock Grove as a way to pull family together and to spend time enjoying wooded beauty! I have never in my travels spoken with a nicer host to rent from. If we lived nearby I know we would be friends! :) Everything was very clean and comfortable. We loved it!

Perfect Mountain Retreat!

Everything about our 8 night stay was wonderful! All the 5* reviews are right. Very trustworthy. There were 11 of us from 5 different families and everyone loved the house and surroundings. It was very clean and well taken care of. Beautiful and inviting. The welcome basket and fresh flowers were a treat! Also bottled water on the nightstand was a nice touch. Plenty of towels for everyone and the bed linens were sooo comfy! The kitchen is well stocked with everything needed to prepare meals for a crowd. Description and instructions are very accurate and easy to follow. Had a little glitch at first, but Lee & Pat handled it as quickly as possible. Great communication. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property or to return. Would love to see all those Magnolias in bloom! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us! The scenery is amazing! So much to see in one area. Our ministry took us all thru the Cherokee National Forest and surrounding areas. We visited the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, traveled the Cherohala Skyway, saw Bald River Falls and my hubby even made it to Conasauga Falls-in his suit & tie! The rest of us gave out at various points along the trail! Unanimous vote for best restaurant is The Patio in Madisonville! My recommendation...Dont pass this one by! I promise you'll love it as much as we did!

Wonderful getaway!

What a wonderful vacation! We loved the property. We spent almost every afternoon and evening out in the back porch aroudr he fire or the tables playing card games, etc. We are every meal outside and the weather was perfect. There was ample room in the house. I have teenage twins as well as 6 yr Olds and a 3 yr old, plus grandma joined on vacation and everyone had their own space without being crowded. House was fully stocked and we wanted for nothing. Hosts were communicative and generous- highly recent is property if you want some time to get away from it all. We enjoyed it immensely. We adventured into Loudon to take the littles at the splash pad and community pool, which was cheap and a blast. We also went white water rafting on the ocoee river with OAR- highly recommend this company and trip! Thanks Lee for a wo dwrful, much needed, vacation away! We will defi itelt return!

Fantastic Stay!

My family of 10 spent the week at this wonderful location owned and operated by two of the greatest host. Lee and Patrick went above and beyond making sure we had everything we needed. They offered to show us around their property brought fire wood and continually made sure we were ok after the snow storm that hit the area. The house was better than described quiet and secluded with plenty of room for large groups. We had a few hick ups but they got resolved with just a phone call or text. Next time we are in the area I will definitely start asking if this cabin is available again.

Our New Years trip

Our experience was great and exactly what we hoped for. The communication prior to our trip and throughout was fast and helpful. Lee helped us with a spot to store our trucks and trailers since we towed our Jeeps to the area. The house was beautiful and well stocked and prepared for our stay. Tons of helpful maps and information left in the book for the surrounding area. You are definitely off the grid but if that is your plan like it was ours, you will love this house and hospitality that comes with it. I happily recommend this place for those looking to get away and enjoy a quiet mountain stay.

Wonderful place!

Our family loves getting away to the country & mountains, so the remoteness of this property was perfect! We had a wonderful Thanksgiving together & had all the room we needed. By far, the best stocked kitchen of any place we've been over the years. Beds were super comfy. We did miss watching football on Thanksgiving day, but we got outside after eating & played our own football. The property around the house is beautiful so we took lots of hikes together. We will definitely rent again!

Quiet secluded cottage

Our stay at the cottage was very nice. Lee had everything ready and waiting for us to start our vacation. The cottage and bunkhouse were both well supplied with kitchen items etc. The property is beautiful. We were here for a family members birthday which included a trip to Noah’s Ark Replica. Defiantly get your food supplies for the first couple days as it is a 40 minute ride on a twisty road to the nearest stores. Overall we had a great family trip. The cottage and bunkhouse were very comfortable for our large family.

What a wonderful host Lee was. The property was just right for our large family retreat - 7 adults and 10 grandkids. The bunkhouse was perfect for Grandpa and Gigi to keep the older grands while the parents got to sleep in. The yard was great and we would have enjoyed it thoroughly if it hadn't rained. I would highly recommend this property for a large family gathering!

Had lovely time in this spacious house, great communication with the owner.

We were staying with 2 families: 4adults and 4 kids. The house was very spacious, was well equipped, and had absolutely everything you need during your stay. In terms of cleanses: was immaculate. The owner did his best for the quests by taking care of the smallest details: from lighting up Xmas lights, through a welcome goody basket, to remotely preheating the water in the hot tub so we could use it right away. The house is remotely located, 40min drive away from restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations. We, personally, loved the location: middle of the woods, with trails all around. With some grocery planning ahead, you don't drive forth and back at all. Lovely house.

A hidden gem!

If anyone is looking for a true getaway from the busyness of everyday life, this vacation rental is for you! We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Hemlock Grove! We rented the property including the Bunk House for our family vacation which included our grown children and their families. The house is very nicely decorated. The beds are plentiful and very comfortable! The house was so well equipped the only need is the food you plan to eat. There are plenty of dishes, cups, glasses, etc. There are also small appliances and every type of pan you’ll need. We enjoyed using the gas grill on the back porch which was in excellent shape. The fire pit was perfect for roasting marshmallows and treating everyone to S’mores. Even though we felt secluded in the wonderful quiet of nature, we had access to creeks, rivers and lakes to entertain the young and not so young! The drive to town took about thirty minutes but it was a very easy drive. We found the children were content to play in the very spacious yard area just outside and as needed the bunk house provided for indoor entertainment with the pool table and wii - nice evening entertainment for the adults, too! All in all everyone really enjoyed this vacation! Thank you to Lee for great communication prior to the trip to the mountains. He made everything much more peaceful by giving us the details we needed to plan well. We highly recommend this vacation rental!

Hidden Gem...and I do mean hidden!

After vacationing in the Gatlinburg area of TN for 20 years, I was a little hesitant to try a new area, and one with a house instead of a cabin, at that. Let me tell you...we were NOT disappointed! I'm certain that I don't have enough room to write enough praises, but read through the reviews carefully and you'll get an idea of what awaits you. It's not going to be for everyone. The nearest...anything, is 40 minutes away! If you're stuck to your phone or internet, you may want to look elsewhere. But if you're looking for an escape, a piece of unconnected paradise to refresh and reconnect, look no further! Hemlock Grove is a destination on its own! We stayed at Hemlock Grove with 4 adults and 12 children. The bunkhouse was a lifesaver! I'm not sure how we've ever vacationed without one and don't think I'll ever be able to again. The kids loved the pool table and Wii, along with the movie nights...of course all of this only at night because, during the day, this property is a childhood paradise! 300 acres?? We fished at the pond, hiked the numerous trails, roasted Smores, built forts, climbed trees, set up volleyball and soccer in the field that was generously offered, and took time for lots of target practice. We brought our own food because, like I said, it's a trek for anything. We did venture out one day to visit Fort Loudon. It's beautiful and an interesting trip that's not too far, but there's really no need to go anywhere. Wait until you see the stars at night! The cottage itself is comfortable and homey. In fact, never before have I left a vacation home without a backache. This was a first at Hemlock! On top of it all, Lee has been so kind and hospitable throughout our entire stay. It really could not have been better! Lord willing, we'll be back!!

Came for the 2017 Eclipse and stayed for the nature.

We can't say enough nice things about our magical stay at Hemlock Grove! We came to view the total solar eclipse, but got so much more. Lee and Pat were such wonderful, gracious and accommodating hosts and the house and property met our expectations and beyond. During our stay we hiked up to the ridge for a breathtaking view and took daily hikes through well-maintained paths in the woods. We found an ancestral cemetery on one of the paths and an amazing variety of colorful wild mushrooms! The property was so vast and beautiful, it was like we were in our own private national park. There's no wi-fi or cell service at the house, so you HAD to walk a 1/2 mile round trip to get to wi-fi access, but we only found this to be a plus! At night, we gathered outside around the fire pit to make s'mores and sat in the hot tub stargazing. The remoteness of the property made this the perfect site for us amateur astronomers, and besides viewing the eclipse in its totality, we saw shooting stars, planets and even satellites clearly in the dark country sky. When we did decide to venture down into town, we enjoyed swimming in nearby Citico creek, splashing in Bald River falls off the Cherahoula Skyway, sipping wine at the nearby Tsali Notch vineyard and eating pizza at the Venti Pizzeria. And we would be remiss to not mention a stop at Sloane's, where you can get everything, and I mean everything you need, before you venture up into your mountain retreat. Did I mention baby bunnies? Yeah, there were baby bunnies in their garden. And lightening bugs. MAGIC. If you are looking for a place to unplug the kids, get back in touch with your family, or just meet up with an old group of friends, look no further than Hemlock Grove. We can't wait to visit again!

Repeat Guests, Repeat Success

Hemlock Grove is just like staying at home...if your home was nestled on 300 gorgeous acres with hiking trails, comfy beds, incredible views, and all the peace and quiet you can imagine. This was our second year staying at the cottage, and our experience was equally as dreamy as our first visit. The home is incredibly cozy, well-appointed, stocked with all the equipment you need to make some "down home" meals, and features an endless array of finishing touches - books (and a hammock to read them on), music (and a great stereo to handle the soundtrack of vacation), firewood and a back deck to enjoy it on, a hot tub out under the stars, and room to roam for any age (we had 6 kids with us). We've visited many, many places and Hemlock Grove will keep drawing us back - the quiet of the woods, the warmth of the hosts, and the memories in the air. It's all good. So, so good.
