About this property
High House by Stone Bridge & Sunken Garden
A world away... in the middle of everything. Relax with the whole family at this peaceful home—the greenest house in Miami, by the Stone Bridge & the Sunken Garden.
Your host family is always close by to help with whatever you need, like catering dinners & BBQ, or directions to INSIDER SPOTS in Miami.
We’ve got all the gear for a young family: high chairs, baby bedding & baths.
Charge your electric car off the sun! And learn how this big beautiful home can have a ZERO electric bill.
The High House is the greenest home in all of Miami-Dade County. It’s a stunning mix of deeply traditional architecture and cutting edge green solutions from the future.
The house was not so much built as “planted,” nestled deep into the lime rock and ancient ocean sand of the prehistoric sea that once covered this place. By planting the home’s structure deep in the ground, the house’s internal climate is coupled to the ground and to groundwater, through a series of pumps which use water from deep below the ground to cool and heat the house.
Even without the fancy modern gizmos, the house is built to “breathe“ on its own, using a central staircase volume topped by clerestory windows. This design was standard in places like Key West and New Orleans, and it works so well that by opening one door off the kitchen, and two clerestory windows, the house breathes on its own, pulling in cooled air from breezes that have entered over the spring-like pool and releasing humid hot air out the clerestory windows atop the solar chimney.
Guest access
The High House can sleep as many as ten, with the available Loft Space in the cellar. If your group is smaller, you’ll still have all the room you need. Rooms that are not needed for small groups will be closed to keep them ready for future guests.
You will have full use of the kitchen, laundry, all four porches, the pool and the East Lawn. The house’s mechanical systems in the cellar & the multiple tool sheds and equipment sheds are for host use only.
Your hosts will continue to maintain the pool, the kitchen and the cellar. The pool and the East Lawn are perfect for evenings. This is a quiet family neighborhood, and quiet hours are strictly observed after 11 pm.
Other things to note
The house includes a memorial garden, special memorial trees and a sunken meditation space. We welcome you to visit these places with respect.
Our family has built this home over many years of hard work, blood & sweat, heartbreak and joy. We are honored to be able to share this special place with you. We ask that you approach this place ready to enjoy, and to honor those who are already here. Please be a respectful neighbor during your time with us.
Among those who are already here are the foxes, owls, hawks, and the cats and dogs. Please don’t feed any of them. Enjoy from a distance.
Host sometimes stays in the basement.
