About this property
Extended Stay, 9-13mo Lease Available August 2025
Traveling work assignment? Need a place to land while your own house is remodeled? We are a family of 3 planning a 1-year sabbatical abroad and would like to find a responsible tenant to keep our house company while we're gone. Located in a semi-rural upscale neighborhood at the Marin/Sonoma County line just 6 min from downtown Novato, 25min from San Francisco, and 20min to Petaluma, this 3-story house has spectacular bay & mountain views from almost every room. Entering the 1st floor, you'll find a billiard room, formal dining room, family room, half bath, and large gourmet kitchen with Wolf gas cooktop, warming drawer, two sinks, and beverage fridge. Three of the bedrooms are on the second floor including the primary bedroom suite which has its own living room and fireplace. The 4th bedroom is on the 3rd floor and is a stunning retreat for guests as it is extra large with floor-to-ceiling windows all around. The flooring on the 2nd & 3rd levels is hardwood while the 1st floor and both decks is slate tile, perfectly non-slip for wet feet coming in from the pool.
Outdoors you'll find a large deck, pool, BBQ, 2 fire pits, a zip line, 3 swings, and a tree house. The property is not fenced so that wildlife can freely roam so keep that in mind if you have a pet. We are not opposed to you constructing a small enclosure for pet or garden if desired however.
The 3-car garage will have 2 spots blocked with our stored belongings, but 1 spot will remain available for you. The driveway can host another 3 cars and has an EV charger.
Minimum rental period of 9 months at $6995/mo plus PG&E and water. The 1-acre property is shared with an occupied guest house so utilities would be split with that tenant. That tenant also shares the driveway, but does not use any of the outdoor space or pool.
Comparable houses in this area rent for $10k + but we have discounted the rent because it's more important for us to have kind, flexible, and trustworthy caretakers than to get the highest price. We also realize that, like most houses of this age, it's not perfect and there are some 95% completed DIY projects around to tolerate (loose baseboard, sticky window, some missing grout, a fussy sink stopper, etc).
Monthly housekeeping is included and we have a licensed contractor handyman on-call.
We intend to leave in August 2025 and return roughly 1-year later, but can be flexible.

About the host
Your host

We are a married couple with a school-aged daughter and large extended family, some of whom live in the same neighborhood. We own a construction business and both have backgrounds in healthcare. We have been landlords for 15 years of other properties, but never for our own home. While we are cognizant of the added emotional attachment and protective instincts inherent in renting out our family home, we are pragmatic and realistic when it comes to standard wear & tear. We are lucky to live in such a gorgeous part of the Bay Area and want to share it with kind people who will appreciate it as much as we do.
Why they chose this property
This home was built by a family member and has been in our family for 50 years. After traveling the world, we still feel this spot is special and unique. The house is in unincorporated Marin County, one of the most sought after locals in California. The neighborhood is all custom homes of various ages. We are close enough to the town of Novato to make Costco & Target runs a breeze, but not so close as to feel like we're in a city. There are no streetlights or sidewalks. We are on septic systems, and wildlife is abundant. Multiple neighbors have horses, sheep, and even peacocks. In under 30min we can be in San Francisco, Napa, or at the beach.
What makes this property unique
Our location and home features are upscale, but not pretentious. We wouldn't label it "luxury", but it's certainly not your average tract house. Surrounded by an oak woodland and insane views, this home has a very indoor-outdoor vibe.
