Great large villa with wonderful views
The house is very large, offers plenty of space and is well furnished. The pool is wonderful. From the porch on the upper floor you have a wonderful view towards the sea. The house is already a few years old and generally in good condition. However, the chairs at the dining table and the sofa in the living room should be replaced occasionally.Waianae is a small town and not part of the luxury mile. However, the west coast has some very beautiful beaches. The traffic is heavy and it usually takes 1.5 hours arrive at Honolulu. We would definitely rent the house again.

It was like a dream
Location, location, location. If you are looking for down town Honolulu this is not for you. The valley is very far out of the city. It is so quiet and peaceful. We were from the east coast so we were up at the crack of dawn and the beautiful sun rise over the mountains was fantastic. If you are looking for a quiet peaceful time with your family, away from the husle and busle of the city this is the place. Very nice.

Really felt like we experienced the real Hawaii. Not glitzy, yet elegant, Fantastic views from the house porch, well equipped with all the things that you need but did not bring. Will look forward to the next stay.

Disappointed
Not fully cleaned when we arrived! We went out to buy cleaning materials and airfreshner. AC, wifi, tv, lights did not work (only two days and not every room light). Great size for a big family and spacious. Awesome house view bathrooms for every room, but too expensive for the inconvenience we went through.

Honk, honk, sirens, traff...
Honk, honk, sirens, traffic....that's how the vacation started down in Waikiki. A few days later, the house in Makaha was ready for the whole family. We had twelve adults and one toddler that thoroughly enjoyed our week in Makaha. Everyone enjoyed a little something different about the house. The beautiful scenery, the sounds of rural Oahu, the uncrowded beaches and, of course, the pool. Everyone agreed the house was so spacious it didnt even feel crowded with thirteen of us around the place. Thanks again for opening your home to us for a memorable graduation and anniversary celebration in Oahu. We highly recommend this home to families looking for a place to settle in and relax in Paradise!

4/10 Poor

Not exactly what I expected
The house not as new as displayed in pictures in ad. Many issues with things around the house. Owner did accommodate where possible but it was just disappointing that so many things were in ill repair, dirty or just outdated. House is several hours away from any tourist attractions unless you leave at 6:30 am to beat the rush hour (all day) traffic. The beach is not very desirable as it is inhabited by permanent campers and the homeless. There is a beach 6 blocks away that I did not go to, so that may have been better. The house is not located in an area that you would feel safe to just go for a walk and enjoy the scenery. It had a very slummy feel to it. The fridge and pantry are stocked with items left by previous renters but be sure to check expiry dates. I would not recommend this area for people or families wanting to do a whole lot of sightseeing or take in lots of activities. If you are looking for a getaway and you just want to stay at the house, use the pool and not venture out too much then this would be the place for you. The grounds are nicely kept. The wrap around deck is perfect for all times of the day and offer some spectacular views and beautiful sunsets. There is a helpful binder that offers information about the area i.e. places to go shopping, get gas etc. Owner would benefit from staying at the house for a weekend to review items that need up keeping or for things that should be replaced. All in all we had a pleasant stay but I would personally not stay there again simply because of the location.

The ideal vacation getaway for big groups!
We had such a nice time at this home. The views are stunning!!! Book this home if you want a unique view and a lot of space. We loved that each room had it's own bathroom. There was more than enough room for hanging out on the balcony, kitchen table, or downstairs. We had a group of 9 and never felt crowded. One things I have to mention is the location. If you are not planning on leaving the area or the home this house location is perfect. There are beaches nearby too! However, if you are planning on doing excursions on the opposite sides of the island plan on 1.5 -2 hours + to get there! (depending on traffic) We had excursions almost every day, so we felt like we spent a lot of time in the car during this trip. However, we all agreed that we would all come back and stay again if we did not have to travel far. Also, with the home being on the west side there are a lot of homeless people walking around and camped at many of the beaches. I would not feel comfortable walking around outside at night. I would not have changed our reservation for this fact. Just something to keep in mind. I loved that they had beach toys, chairs and boogie boards for us to use! The grocery stores around are pretty expensive so I would recommend a Costco trip before getting settled. We also felt like we were limited to the restaurants around. There are a lot of fast food options but only a few sit down places to eat. The owner was fast to respond and had all the information about the home in a convenient binder. Can't wait to go back!

Great size for big families!
Having separate rooms and bathrooms for everyone is great. You can’t beat the pool and all the toys available. It’s a non-tourist part of the island and the locals are very friendly and beaches clean and much less crowded. Plan for long drives in and out of the area.

House was inline with the reviews.
House is located about 45 min to an hour drive from the airport. Water is beautiful, buy the beaches in this area are full of homeless. Beach is about 1-2 miles from the house. House was clean , but is showing. It’s age. House sits along a large loft which is well maintained. Overall a pleasant stay..

Comfortable and spacious with a great pool and all the necessities for our family.
We had a great time on our family vacay! Enough beds & bedrooms for 2 couples + 3 single adults + 2 children.. The views from the upper deck were wonderful and we all enjoyed the pool. We took trips to Honolulu for Pearl Harbor, a luau, Waikiki Beach, etc.. Advice for those planning a trip to Hawaii (and other popular vacation spots) book you activities well in advance! We didn’t get on the Arizona Memorial due to it being booked up for weeks (still a lot to see & do at PH) and the same with the Polynesian Cultural Center. Many luaus we also booked up. The house suited our needs well, but it does need some TLC with painting and repairs, but things still work fine. Location is alright, but one should plan on driving 10+ miles back closer to Honolulu for groceries (local area is higher priced with poor selections). There are some good local restaurants and beaches. Property manager was very friendly and helpful. Grounds crew came in to do their up-keeping tasks for a couple of hours one day and the pool guy came on one other day. Minor disruptions and not a problem. The grounds are gated with nicer homes surround it. We would consider staying here again.

Beautiful View
We were a party of 12 and the size of the house fit our needs well. However, the downstairs bedrooms were very very warm because they don’t have ac. We spent a lot of time driving from the house to other parts of the island because there is nothing to do in Waianae-you have to drive through an area filled with homeless folks and the area is quite dirty. Once you get to the actual property it is nice and has a beautiful view of the ocean.

Beautiful ocean views.great wrap around porch. The House is great for a large group. The kitchen was very well stocked. . The down size is, the pool never warmed up enough to be able to enjoy. The neighbors complained a lot when we were just outside talking. And it was not in a neighborhood that you would want to walk to the beach. Looked like a rough neighborhood.

Quiet area to enjoy being out of the city. Respecting quiet hours after10PM are a must. Lots of water activities nearby to enjoy without the hustle and bustle of the cities. Amazing House
This house was amazing. There were 10 of us ranging from 11-72 years old. The house was big enough for all of us. The open concept was perfect to be able to talk with everyone while preparing food in the kitchen. The kitchen was well equipped with everything that you would need. It was so nice that every bedroom had it's own bathroom. The pool was really pretty. My family had a great time hanging at the pool and enjoying the breathtaking views. The communication between the property owner was great. She replied in a timely manner. The sunrise and sunsets were beautiful, while hanging on the wrap around porch. There is a beach at then end of the road (Jade) and we saw sea turtles there! I actually liked the west side of the island, because there were less people. The beaches were really nice too. Overall, my family had a magical Hawaiian vacation and the house was wonderful.

Beautiful Home
I rented this property for a week and it was a great experience! As the check in date got closer I received continuous clear information about the property that made it very easily accessible to my family and I. Also, I had good communication with the property manager throughout the week and when it came time to check out. In addition, the home provided plenty of space for everyone in the family to have they’re own private rooms and bathrooms. The house came fully stocked with anything we could ask for and more. The pool was wonderful and the view was amazing (especially at sunset)! Overall the best family vacation we had all experienced!

We were very pleased with the property. There was an abundance of space for all 12 of us, and with the exception of a few wear and tear failures, 1 coffee maker stopped working/leg of 1 dining room chair broke when a guest sat down/1 toilet lever didn't function properly, we would definitely recommend staying here.

About the host

Hosted by Cynthia

Host profile image
I live and work primarily in San Francisco, fell in love with Oahu as a child and currently enjoy traveling all over the world in my free time. I built this home in 2004 as a possible retirement home and welcome groups and families to enjoy it when I am not on Oahu.

Why they chose this property

Makaha is quiet and feels like old Hawaii and I love waking up to the roosters and birds each morning. I chose Makaha for it's beautiful sunsets, inspiring mountain ranges and uncrowded beaches. Most days, I stay on this coast, enjoying local BBQ and shave ice spots, beautiful beaches, Ko Olina for the hotels and Kapolei for restaurants, shopping, trampoline fun and the Wet n Wild Water Park. I also love that Oahu has so many options to drive to when I am feeling adventurous. I spent every summer here when my three children were young and now that they are grown, I visit by myself or with friends.

What makes this property unique

It is unique to find a property with 5 en-suite bedrooms, a private pool, sweeping ocean views and nightly sunsets that allows a large group to stay together and cook meals at their convenience.
