About this property
Escape to Fundo Arawishka, 5 kms from Pedro Ruiz,
An exclusive independent apartment on the second floor with fantastic views.
Two double bedrooms, one with its own ensuite, hot water, living cum dining cum kitchen, fully equipped for independent living.
Just bring your toothbrush and some groceries. Covered parking.
5kms from Pedro Ruiz and 60km from Chachapoyas.
Set in a hectare of lawn, in Fundo Arawishka, ideal for travellers, bird watchers, or those who just want to escape for a few weeks/months.
Fundo Arawishka is about three hectares; on a small scale we grow coffee, pitahaya (dragon fruit), banana and about a hectare of lawn. Beside our house, we have a brick house containing three apartments, the two bedroomed upper one with 65m2 and then two apartments (Arawishka B) of about 30m2 each on the ground floor with one bedroom each. All apartments have a kitchen and living cum dining room and are fully furnished and equipped. We will leave you with the ingredients for your first breakfast so that you get off to a good start.
The climate is kind all year round, we don’t need heating or air-conditioning, and neither do we need mosquito netting on the windows, although there are a few moths that come to visit.
You get a set of keys, so you can come and go as you like.
Guest access
We have carefully planned the services; rarely have problems with water, gas and electricity (with a standby generator if necessary). The internet is beamed in from 20 kms away which works most of the time, and more or less reasonable mobile phone coverage.
Otherwise if you’re not plugged into the internet, you can wander along the kilometre of paths around the Fundo, help sort the coffee, mow the lawn or just watch the bird life.
There is a “tendal” in front of the flats that can be used for barbeques or just hanging out or entertaining visitors.
Attached to the apartments we have an area for washing and drying clothes, or otherwise we can arrange for the service.
Interaction with guests
We love to interact with the guests, so that they make the best of their time here and will show you around the “Fundo”, so you can take full advantage of what we have here.
We want you to be independent, but if you need any help with tourism, groceries, health problems etc. we will do our best, as we live next door and if we are not there, we have a caretaker who lives at the entrance.
We supply you with free coffee and, depending on availability, bananas, pitahaya, passion fruit, nopal cactus and tamarillo from the “Fundo”,.
The neighborhood
Fundo Arawishka is nestled at 1,500meters up in the Northern Andes in a hamlet of about 60 souls, called Chaquil, at kilometre 300 on the main road from the coast to the jungle. The scenery around here is spectacular as is the tourism.
Although we are only about 15 minutes from Pedro Ruiz by Moto taxi ($1.50), probably the most comfortable way for “doing” tourism is renting a taxi by the half or whole day ($60).
Just a quick checklist, starting from the nearest. Sulphur springs in Chaquil, Marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird sanctuary at Huembo, Yumbilla waterfall (4 tiers 895m high) at Porvenir, there are also other waterfalls nearby, the most remarkable being: Pabellón (400m high) and Chinata (580m high), the lake at Pomacochas, Sarcophagus El Tigre at San Jeronimo. Gocta waterfall (2 tier 771m high), Lamud with more sarcophagus and Quiocta cave, Chachapoyas and the Sonche canyon, The mountaintop ruins of the fortress of Kuelap with its new cable car, bird sanctuary at Abra Patricia Owlet Lodge, Leymebamba and the museum of the mummies from The Condor Lake, etc. etc. etc.
A biologist’s paradise, we have many specialist in birds and plant life passing through.
For the family, there are three swimming pools in Pedro Ruiz, water rafting on the Utcubamba, Zip line in Churuja, Discotheques in Pedro..
Culinary delights, apart from what you get up to with the local ingredients in your kitchen. Pedro Ruiz is not renowned for its restaurants but it’s cheap and not bad, there are places we can sort of recommend. Chachapoyas has a good selection and variety.
Getting around
We are in a privileged area of the world that takes time to get to. The nearest airport is Chachapoyas, but there are no flights yet, (cleanest public toilets in Peru!). So the fastest way from Lima, is to Jaen (Cajamarca) and then 2.5 hours on a well maintained highway ($10). Also you can take flights to Chiclayo or Tarapoto that are about 8 hours away.
If you like sitting on buses there is a very good service from Lima which takes about 22 hours (Movitours $40).
We are 5kms from Pedro Ruiz Moto taxi $1.50 and then a “colectivo” ($2) for the 50kms from Chachapoyas.
Because of the winding roads one needs to be careful driving round here, lack of pavements means that they get used for just about anything by the locals, although most of the roads are in surprisingly good condition, special care need to be taken during the wet season.
Cycling is good exercise round here as it’s all up and down mountains!
Trekking tours may be organized upon request.
Other things to note
For those who are curious “Arawishka” is the local name of a beautiful tree which we have in the middle of the “Fundo” Cojoba arboreo for those Latin lovers.
