Rustic cabins and kitchens. Artful details all around the property- blown glass, fired ceramics, metal work, colorful buoys, Einstein lightbulbs, birch wood, and wood details. Great views all around with private beaches on both sides. Staff is very personal and attentive, and you can tell genuinely wnts their guests to have a great time.

A Gem in Alaska

Between Beaches was a perfect birthday get away. They had everything we needed in the cabin. The views were amazing and breathtaking. We planned on doing activities during our stay but the weather was so nice during our short stay we ended up beach bumming. Will definitely be back.

Perfect AK getaway

Awesome setup for couples. Beautiful spot and great hospitality. We’re Alaskans that have explored a lot of the State. This little get away is a must. It’s easy, clean and she’s already got the toys on site. Can’t recommend it enough.

Get you tide pool on

This was our second visit to Between the Beaches. We planned our trip around a large minus tide. Awesome tide pool exploration on top of everything. Awesome trip. Be sure to dig some cockle and eat them, they are a delicacy in Britain.

Between Beaches Stay

The location of Between Beaches is amazing. It is serene and private. The ceramic art and overall decor of the entire property is very well done. I appreciate rustic charm, but the cabin was not as clean as I would expect at this price point. The shelves were dusty and there were cob webs in the corners. The space was small, but the beds we're comfortable and the space heater was just enough. We enjoyed the hot tub, kayaks, and hiking on the spit.

Perfect - exactly as I had hoped

Our stay was amazing! Between Beaches Pioneer cabin was very quaint and rustic however had everything we needed! The call of the bald eagles was heard almost around the clock (a good thing) and several, including fledglings, visited often. This is an ideal place for a getaway - I wish we lived up here as I would be a frequent guest! Kristi was very welcoming and I am looking forward to having some of her beautiful art in my home! We just left MacDonald spit a few hours ago and I wanted to rate my experience before I return to the grind! (I should note that we were there during the fire ban ... and did not have the best weather but it was still an awesome stay!). Highly recommend!!

Fabulous escape

I am so grateful Kristi has opened her family home to travelers. What a magical place to spend our honeymoon. We wanted a week to disconnect, enjoy the mountain views, outdoor activities, and the Alaskan lifestyle Between Beaches exceeded our expectations. While there we enjoyed fishing in the bay, watching the otters and eagles from our porch, & beach bonfires in the evening. We are already planning our next trip back!

I highly recommend this magical spot

Between Beaches is well worth visiting. Kristie is an amazing artist and her ceramic creations decorate the walls of the cabins and landscaping. The cabin was so thoughtfully and practically set up everything you need is available. Because the property is on a spit you have access to both sides and chairs are set up for you to enjoy either a view Kachemak Bay and incredible volcanos on one side with otters playing in the waves. On the other side you have a view of Kasitsna Bay where a large family of bald eagles flying back and forth from trees above you to a spot across the way where they must have nests. The long sandy strip is lovely to walk along and they have kayaks available if you want to paddle around. Most people fish but if you don’t fish but would like to eat fish (like us) Kristie will sell you some to bbq on the grill provided. The kitchen has everything you need to cook your own meals which I was happy to do after eating in so many restaurants while traveling I was ready for my own cooking. We picked up groceries in Homer and brought them with us on Mako’s Water Taxi they are friendly, efficient and helpful. You can park your car for a week for free on Homer spit and Mako drops you right at your door at Between Beaches. Overall I don’t think it could have been a better stay.

Charming oceanfront cabin getaway!

We are return guests and love all of the cabins at Between Beaches. We will continue to stay here every time we visit Seldovia. Cabins are fully stocked with all your basic needs and the artwork is amazing. Beds are super comfy after a long day of exploring. The owner is friendly and always willing to help with anything you need. Be sure to check out her art gallery for some art kits too! Don’t hesitate to stay at any of these cabins - you won’t be disappointed! We can’t wait to return!

Carefully crafted cabins in a secluded paradise!

Besides the location which is an unbelievable bounty of wildlife, beaches and views, our cabin was beautiful and our stay comfortable. The hostess took great care in creating this paradise in an artful and visually elegant and attractive fashion including the cabin, art gallery, sauna and hot tub. We found everything we needed and were even able to purchase fresh fish. We took full advantage of the amenities and even used the provided equipment to dig for clams which were clean and delicious. As far as the wildlife, we never saw a greater concentration of animals anywhere else during our trips; we saw bald eagles with young, otters, loons and a myriad of ocean creatures in the tidal zone including octopus and nauti branches. We picked berries and enjoyed every inch of this amazing place and always felt the comfort and artsy character of our cabin charming and elegant. We could not have enjoyed our stay more in a place more unique and wonderful than this.

Romantic and wonderful!

We had such an amazing experience at Kristi's place! Kristi is such a wonderful host, and her place has everything. Long walks on the beach, beautiful sunsets, kayaking, tide pooling, evening beach fires, you couldn't ask for anything more. The cabins are very well taken care of and had everything you would need! Definitely going back again!

Between Beaches Review, by Ella and Rich

We had a wonderful stay (three night stay) here at Between Beaches, and will definitely come back another summer. If you are looking to book at trip here, I certainly recommend it. The owner is really sweet and caring, and the property itself is marvelous. You often have Mc Donald's Spit's beaches all to yourself, which is great if you are looking for some solitary fishing time in the bay, or some peaceful beachcombing. The cabin itself has a lovely view of the bay and the cabin is nestled in the trees. The dƩcor is mostly made by the owner, Kristi, and you'll find the shower has a really nice design. She provided us with massive salmon tails each night for the BBQ for a fraction of what I pay at home. We also enjoyed world class kayaking steps from the cabin (we had Mako Water Taxi deliver the kayak when they dropped us - very easy). Great place to stay, no reason to leave the property, ton to do and experience.

Peaceful hideaway

The pioneer cabin is a cozy and inviting place to stay. The entire property is landscaped and maintained beautifully. Kristi has adorned the cabins with wonderful artistic touches. And being fishermen they have available the most delicious and well priced cuts of fish, just steps from the cabins. This is truly a lovely place to stay if looking for a bit of rest and relaxation.

These cabins are hard to beat

It says a lot when an Alaskan goes back to stay more than once at an Alaskan rental. It usually means that there is something special about that place. Between Beaches is one of those places, and we hope to be back many more times in the future. Kristi has a good thing going here. Come check it out.

A beach on both sides

This is a great place to kick back and relax. The cabin is snug; a complete kitchen, table, and two comfy beds take up most of the space. But you don't want to be inside. A rowboat gets you out on the water, or rent a kayak. I brought a SUP. At minus tides the tidepooling is spectacular. We biked to the end of Jakolof Bay and beyond, to the trailhead that goes to Tutka Bay. We could've biked into Seldovia for dinner, but opted for moose hotdogs over a beach fire in the evenings. Sunsets over Kachemak Bay and moonrises over Kasitsna Bay; being between two beaches was unique.

Exclusive Natural Wonders are yours!

My husband and I love to travel, especially where you can inhale and exhale clean air and listen to the sounds of nature. Our stay at between beaches on McDonnald spit was an experience of a lifetime! The cabin is charming and views are extraordinary . Eagles abound and their chattering can be heard in the trees above, as the surf pounds and the otters break open clams on their chest one can hardly believe the magic and majesty of this pristine place! Tide pools beckon exploration as the tides rise and fall and the row boats offer access to those willing to follow the call. Clear nights reveal the brilliance of the heavens, and not all the stars are in the sky, Kristi and Brad shine as owners and managers happy to share their expertise and offer helpful suggestions. My advice to those looking for an unforgettable Alaskan experience this is the place!!!

A piece of heaven in southern Alaska!

If you are looking for a little piece of heaven off the beaten path in southern Alaska, McDonald Spit, across the bay from Homer, is the place for you. Kristi and Brad run Between Beaches Alaska where you can rent one or two charming, clean cabins that are right on the beach of Kachemak bay. Kristi and Brad made us feel right at home, and we watched the sunset from beach chairs with a campfire, walked the beautiful beach, fished the back bay in skiffs borrowed from Kristi, went clamming and tidepooling at low tide, took hundreds of pictures of bald eagles, and visited charming Seldovia. My son and I have been going for a week almost every summer since he was 10 (now 15). Safe, family oriented, quiet, beautiful- Wish we could go every year!

One of the most relaxing peaceful places around!

We stayed in these adorable cabins in July. Both cabins are so incredibly cute! The owner has placed some very neat artwork in and around the cabins. We spent the days wandering the beach collection shells and sand dollars. We saw star fish, crabs and octopus. On a rainy afternoon I sat under the cover of trees and watched about 15 bald eagles and a few seagulls argue over fish. Water and heat in cabins with a small kitchen. The only discomfort we had was the beds were very firm. Other than that this was a wonderful place to visit (via Mako Water Taxi) and I would love to go again!

Personal Favorite!

My husband and I stayed in this quaint, quiet cabin on McDonald’s spit back in January. McDonald’s spit is a lovely spot, one of my personal favorites among the areas located across Kachemak Bay from Homer. We spent the afternoon walking on the inner beach; spotting sand dollars and wildlife and the evening catching a meteor shower from our campfire on the outer beach. We are going to plan our next visit returning during a big low tide to view the tidepools, something I haven’t done since I was a kid. Kristy was a wonderful host and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the history of the property and life ā€œAcross the Bayā€. It is a special place, and Kristy has adorned it with care and thoughtful touches that reflect her love of the area. The cabin was well equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay (even in the middle of winter!). We fell asleep listening to the tide quietly lap against the beach. If you are looking for an authentic Alaskan experience, I would highly recommend staying at Between the Beaches. We can’t wait until we can return!

About the host

Hosted by Kristi McLean

Host profile image
Kristi, a life long Alaskan, was raised in a log cabin by her pioneer parents. By the age of 20, she had already coached skating and skiing, commercial fished, and was running her own boat and crew. Commercial fishing for salmon, halibut, crab, and herring have take her throughout Alaska's waters. A self-taught artist, working primarily in clay, she spends her free time sculpting in her Alaska studio.

Why they chose this property

Aside from the cozy, well-appointed cabins (VRBO#s 993127, 661493, 449876) in a stunning and unique location, you are surrounded by art at Between Beaches Alaska. Ceramic sculptures as well as instillations made from copper, glass floats, drift wood, other beach combing finds, and clay are around every corner--even in your shower! Also, don't miss a tour of the art studio where Kristi works all winter to provide you with one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces and art kits for purchase that are perfect way to remember your time at Between Beaches Alaska--look us up!

What makes this property unique

The waters of Kachemak Bay are some of the richest in the world for sea life, offering visitors an unforgettable experience. Here you will see whales, bald eagles, and sea otters from your doorstep. The unique geology of the area has produced a fantastic setting for beach combing, tide pooling (best at minus tides), fishing and wildlife. Watch the sun rise over one beach and set over the other.
