"Tranquility Base" is a place where you can lose yourself in the beauty, peace, and quiet of nature as land, sea and sky meet on rugged midcoast Maine. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS ONE WINDOW AIR CONDITIONER, because very few people on the peninsula have central ac since the water surrounding us greatly moderates the temperature. On those few days when it does get hot, in addition to the window ac unit, we have fans that will help pull the cooler ocean air through the apartment. Mountains beckon on the horizon from your apartment windows, as saltwater laps against giant granite boulders. Summery mountain breezes carry the scent of pine trees and tangy salt air through your window. Nearby lighthouses, museums, antique shops, restaurants, and a range of gourmet to simple general stores entice you. Numerous parks and trails offer opportunities for exploration and exercise, including our own one-mile circle loop through the woods and by the water. Your guest apartment is located just outside the picturesque town of Tenants Harbor. It’s 20 minutes from Rockland, and 30 minutes to Camden. The Portland and Acadia National Parks are each a one hour and 30 minute drive. Canada is only three hours to the north. The Port Clyde General Store, where you can get Lobster Benedict for breakfast, is a brief, beautiful, five minute drive. Kayak rentals can be had there too. The East Wind Inn is close by and offers a delicious lobster dinner. Among the many lighthouses is the famous Marshall Point Light, backdrop in the movie "Forrest Gump." Don't miss the best swordfish and local oysters in the world at the award winning "Primo" Restaurant just 20 minutes away. The area has an epicurean feast of great places to dine.
The apartment is a modern second story walk-up with a full bath, two bedrooms, one with a very comfortable queen size mattress and the other with two twins, a full size antique slate top pool table, an efficiency kitchen with a large microwave and a large convection toaster oven and other small appliances as well as a washer and dryer and full size stainless steel refrigerator with ice and water in the door. Free internet and satellite TV.
It is located on the banks of the salt water St. George River, with lobster traps and boats right out back. Across the salt water river is the Olson Homestead, site of the Andrew Wyeth painting "Christina's World", and a museum of his paintings is in nearby Rockland. Bring your hiking gear, and camera with plenty of storage for pictures, and an appetite for fresh Maine cuisine.
In the apartment you will find notebooks with information on local dining, shopping, hiking, boating, museums.
Kayak rentals nearby. Swimming and fishing in the salt water right behind the house are possible. See details that can be found at the end of the amenities section of this listing.
Here is a short list of fun activities that happen nearby every year, which you may want to plan for!

JULY 4TH Almost every town nearby puts on a spectacular display.

ST GEORGE DAYS ST Usually the third long weekend in July. Old fashioned fun for the whole family, including seafood bake, scottish bagpipes, parade through town, and the most spectacular and longest fireworks you will ever see.

NORTH ATLANTIC BLUES FESTIVAL
Annual event in Rockland considered one of the most prestigious on the east coast with an amazing cast of performers has been happening on the Rockland waterfront for a long time.

LOBSTER FEST family fun on the Rockland waterfront includes contests, demos, lobster queen, and parade, and of course lots of lobstah!

UNION FAIR The Union Fair is a great week of family fun and entertainment! Contests, live music, harness racing, the Wine Pavilion, fireworks, the Maine Wild Blueberry Queen Coronation, Demolition Derbys, exhibits, food, demonstrations & shows, the Midway, 4-H, Laser Tag, lots of food.

Great View Maine

The Apartment was very fresh and in very clean shape. Very private area, not many folks around, at least late Sept. Fabulous view of a Maine bay, couple of boats in the bay, and just awesome watching the tide roll in and out. Great prices on lobster in the area, not far from a ton of great sights. Property manager did an excellent job with us. No stove, but a couple of induction burners that worked just fine with us as well as no dishwasher, but again - no problem. Well supplied with necessities. Internet and tv worked just fine for us.

Relaxing and on the water

The house was comfortable. The location is 1mike down a dirt road and the house is right on the water. Very quiet and relaxing. We watched the tides coming and going. Lovely. The pool table was fun The internet worked pretty well. We did stream some movies. We had our kayaks but it was too deep to put in at the house. There’s plenty of places we found to kayak nearby. The bed was comfortable. There is no stove But it worked out fine using the gas grill and the hot plate, microwave and toaster oven. Stephane was helpful and responded quickly. Overall we highly recommend tranquility place

Highly recommend

I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Stunning setting. A true slice of Maine coast. Private unpaved road leads up to the property. Adirondack chairs overlook the rocky cove. We saw a wild mink, kingfisher and great blue heron very close to us. Comfy recliners in the apartment give you a spectacular view. Host was very helpful

Relaxing stay on the water

We loved our stay! The sunsets were so beautiful and we loved eating at the picnic table overlooking the water. I also loved waking up early and drinking coffee while reading and watching the tide come in and out. The internet was fast and reliable for me to work and stream video. And they had an outdoor outlet next to the garage for slow ev car charging.

Perfect getaway

Property was exactly as described. It was clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Bed was clean and comfortable. As advertised, the property is an apartment over the garage of an attached house. The owners were onsite and opened the garage door a couple of times. Not a problem at all, and we had complete privacy otherwise, but if you are looking for total seclusion you may find this to be a negative.

Very private and serene!

We stayed for three nights while visiting family. The beds were very comfortable, the place was well appointed, and it was very clean! It also has a great view of the water, which comes up almost to the back of the loft building! Having a pool table made for fun times! It does not have a stove/oven, but it does have a toaster oven and two induction tabletop cookers, which we used to make a pasta dinner for my family one night. One thing that could make it even better, would be a small deck/porch type sitting area off the living area, so you don’t have to go downstairs to sit. We don’t often require lodging in the area but we will certainly consider staying here again if we do. Thanks for the lovely experience!

Great rural spot

We enjoyed our stay in the woods! While it was “in the sticks,” Tenant’s Harbor was such a charming town and the loft we stayed in had a good view of the water! It was a simple check in/ out process, clean, and we had a great time.

Tranquility as Promised

We enjoyed our stay. The unit was very private and it was wonderful to wake up with a view of the water. Lots of birds and we even saw a dolphin or porpoise one morning right off shore. The location is great for exploring Tenant’s Harbor, Camden, Lincolnville and Rockport. It was fun playing pool at night and we were able to use the Netflix already set up for movies which was great because I’m always forgetting my passwords! We hope to have the opportunity to visit again!

Memorial Weekend 2023

The area was amazing ! The loft was perfect very quiet and cozy! We would love to stay again if it is available! The only recommendation we would make is to place safety stickers in the shower. The floor in the tub was very dangerously slippery.Just a thought to help prevent any guest injuries! We would definitely recommend this site for future visits. Thank you so much! Definitely a five star rating!!

A view into nature

Herons, loon, kingfisher, and multiple visits by a bald eagle , all from the living room window. Excellent hostess who goes far above what would be expected. Only ruff part of our stay would be the road to house. I now know where potholes go to die. Upside is that it keeps the speed of the limited traffic that travels the road very slow.

Wonderful Stay

If it wouldn't have looked bad, I would have given "accuracy of listing" four stars instead of five. Because this place was even better than the listing. The chairs looking out at the water (inside and out), the sense of peaceful isolation even though it is so close to town, a massive bathroom, comfortable bed, sparkling clean everywhere. We also had a blast playing pool , though we played very badly! The stairs up are steep and open; our little dogs were not fond of that part. Closing those steps would take this to an even higher level. Thank you for a marvelous stay!

Nice place to relax outside on the river

Pretty skies and sunrises. Good ventilation. Small kitchen and needs a better pot for boiling pasta. Cotton sheets and blankets, which should be a given but often isn’t. Dog friendly. Need to be comfortable climbing stairs as is a second floor walk up. Easy access. Very clean. Generally well-appointed. Quiet neighborhood on gravel road that is good for walking.

Lives Up To Its Name

Tranquility Base is a peaceful, quiet, lovely spot. Even on hot days, the cottage stayed cool thanks to lots of open windows and salt-scented breezes off the St George River. View and sunsets were spectacular. Beds and furniture are comfortable. If you rent this property you should know it doesn't have a stove or oven. Cooking is accomplished with two plug-in induction burners (plus a microwave and toaster oven). They work fine, but limit what kind of meals you can create. Stephanie, the property manager, was responsive and great to work with. Overall we enjoyed our time here and would recommend it to anyone wanting to get away from it all.

Love St. George Area!

We enjoyed our stay however, we were very concerned about a second egress for safety reasons. Overall, it was a nice apartment to stay in. Beautiful kitchen/refrig/wash dryer with lots of supplies. Bathroom was beautiful but would have preferred curtains on the windows. Beds/pillows very comfortable and spacious closets. The apartment was semi clean/some dirt under beds and under rug with dog hairs. Disappointed that dock/water was not available or that we couldn't access the land shown in pictures. Was expecting a BBQ but it's a fire pit instead and too large to carry from under stairs and I wouldn't cook food on it. Enjoyed ferry to Monhegan Island to hike, Puffin and Nature Cruise and Castle Island Preserve. Wine tasting at Savage Winery, The Causeway Restaurant, Owls Head Transportation Museum!!

About the host

Host profile image
I am a retired Airline Pilot and U.S. Air Force Officer and Pilot. My wife is a former public school teacher. Over the years we have traveled the entire world. We have been fortunate to be able to live where we choose and not be tied down to where we worked.
For much of the year the west coast of Florida on the water is our primary home. My wife spent much of her young life growing up in New England and had roots there too. So it was natural that she was attracted to that area also. After years of looking we found the house on the lot with the location, view and neighborhood we were looking for. The tall evergreen and colorful deciduous trees in the fall, the smell of clean salt air and the amazing quiet all surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the state of Maine made this a natural for a home away from home for us to go on a seasonal basis. We made friends with a nearby couple to rent the place, primarily when we are not there, after spending two years renovating and modernizing the spacious attached upstairs apartment. The center piece inside is the full size antique pool table. The focal point out side is the breathtaking Maine coast view right out back. Huge granite boulders, sea grass at the low point of 20 foot tides, lobster and lobster boats a clam shell toss away, with wading birds, the occasional seal and a passing bald eagle are all part of the Maine magic of this special place. Often the soulful sound of loons is heard drifting on that salt air. The distant mountains behind Camden are occasionally blocked by the sea fog rolling in. If ever there was a place to lose yourself and find peace, this is it.

Why they chose this property

After nearly two decades of looking and several offers on other properties we finally came upon this one. After your stay you will understand why this was the one we were always looking for.

What makes this property unique

As they say in the real estate business, "it is all about location", and this is a very special location in the middle of "Mid coast Maine. Half way between The New Hampshire border and Canada. Right on the water. It is literally a day trip to everywhere in Maine and much of New England. Its location by so much beauty and history make it the perfect place to anchor your Maine adventure and just relax, not say a word, silence your cell phone, or see how many times it will skip like a stone on the river and soon you will actually hear your heart beat.
