Clean, cozy and comfortable!
The Red door cabin in Cruzville is a perfect place to stay in Catron county. It has all of the needed amenities and is situated in the solitude of the Gila National forest. The cool night air made for great sleeping in the comfortable bed. Carol was a fantastic host and went above and beyond to ensure our comfort. If we find ourselves in the area again, we will definitely stay in the Red Door Cabin. Thank you, Carol!

THE EXCELLENT RED DOOR CABIN
The cabin is well done, nicely appointed, had everything we needed. The hosts were were excellent. They helped us with directions, recommended local hikes and furnished maps and cautioned us to watch for elk on the road at night. We saw some. Wood was available if we had wanted a fire in the pit.

Adorable, well appointed, delightful!
We LOVED our stay at Red Door Cabin in Cruzville. What an incredible find! Carole greeted us as if we were long lost friends and made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived. We had complete privacy and comfort as every need had been anticipated. Carole pointed us in the direction of the adjacent National Forest where we enjoyed a lovely evening walk. We used the cabin as our home base and were happy to have such a sweet place to come home to after a day out and about. I highly recommend Red Door Cabin. You won't want to leave!

Quaint and relax environment
Carol was a fantastic host. I was scheduled in August 2020 but had to re-schedule for first weekend in October 2020. She was flexible and it is appreciated! The house was the perfect size for myself and husband. It was clean and the kitchen well equipped. There are horses on the property and we enjoyed feeding them apples and watching them frolic. Nice and relaxing areas outside to sit and listen to the wind in the trees.

Great Little Cabin!
An ideal location with abundant recreational opportunities. I understand that this area supports one of the best hunting experiences for big game hunters, but my interest was in the dark sky location for Astrophotography. My choice to come to the area during the summer monsoon was a risk, but I was rewarded by two fine nights of dark clear skies. I found the cabin go be very clean, well appointed as a small unit and ideal for a couple of people. As stated, the kitchen does not offer a stove, yet there is a heating coil and pans if one so chooses. This was unnecessary for me. While I wanted to get away from the rush of the modern world, the provided internet was most welcome for the work I needed to do with my telescope. The host was gracious, and offered a lot of information about the area. This is a remote area, with the closest population center about 9 miles to the west in the town of Reserve. There are a few eateries/watering holes and small markets. Abundant interesting historic and natural wonders throughout the area within a decent driving distance. Very nice experience!

Rustic Peace and Quiet
We spent almost a month at this delightful small horse ranch property during the monsoon season (June/July) and loved our experience. Carol, our host, was so gracious and hospitable. Never having been around horses before, it was wonderful to get to know them and their individual personalities. It was especially fun to observe the colt when she would have her "zoomies." We saw elk, jack rabbits, cotton tails, so many different types of birds... it is a nature lovers paradise. At the time we were there, the cabin had no internet. But, near the main house we could log on. It was a wonderful month for us, we will remember our time there fondly.

A perfect getaway!
Beautiful mountain location, beautifully appointed cabin and (most critically) beautiful people! Carol and Steve are kind, conscientious and generous hosts. Even a couple days of bad seeing for my dark sky telescoping mission could not dampen my delight at being there. Thank you, Carol and Steve!!

Peace and Quiet
I came to this Vrbo for some quiet and recovery time after a stressful few years. It exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend this sweet little place to others who are seeking the same. The only thing I would mention is if you need fast internet, then you might want to make sure that is available. Since I wasn't concerned about technology, it wasn't a problem for me. Carol did tell me she is trying to improve the internet connection. On a separate note, I would recommend the trail just down the road (on Tahiti Rd). It is a lovely trail with petroglyphs and a nice walk along the river. And of course exploring the Gila National Forest is a must. Thank you, Carol. Trina

A peaceful place to rest and enjoy nature
I was looking for a quiet rural place to stay on my motorcycle trip, and that's exactly what I got. Carol is a kind, friendly host and made me feel right at home. She even offered a bit of groceries the first night I stayed. During the day I rode scenic rides or walked the wilderness. Then I enjoyed lying in the hammock looking at the stars each night. The cabin was comfortable and provided plenty of amenities and privacy. I would definitely stay again if I'm out this way.

Peace and Quiet
The property is so beautiful and peaceful. My husband and I needed a quiet place to reconnect and spend quality time together. Our stay here gave us that and more. The cabin is a great little place with all the comforts you need. The views and walking trails are so beautiful and only steps away from your front door. If you choose to stay here I guarantee you will not regret it.

Adorable place with very kind hosts
We are a couple working remotely and travelling from Oregon to Texas. We were interested by the Gila National Forest area, and thought the Red Door Cabin would be cute and cozy. We were not disappointed. It is absolutely adorable, homey and comfortable. What positively surprised us is how well furnished the place is, better than some rentals in town. The small fridge is actually big enough to store a whole week worth of food for 2, and there is a freezer compartment. All the utensils are there, a kettle, coffee maker, pots and pans, a hot plate, a grill. And the water tastes good! If you like special coffee, the Adobe Cafe is nice. They serve locally roasted coffee (dark roast, it is not 3rd wave), and although we did not try the food because we had our own, the food seemed good and they have plenty of vegetarian options. Just check their opening hours before going, they are a bit funky. On the groceries side, the grocery store in Reserve is surprisingly well-stocked. A bit more expensive than in town, bit very convenient if you start running low on food or feel like having a treat. As for the location, it is really peaceful, the people are kind, and the views are fabulous. There are numerous very nice drives around the moutains, where you will see countless animals, and especially elk. There is a nice easy hike 5 min away from the doorstep. The "streets" around are nice to walk too. And of course, there are numerous hikes in the national forest closeby. Renting there, we knew that the working side of things may be a little harder, as we were not sure what kind of internet we would have. Even if you have online meetings, I think you could work there if you meet these conditions: your colleagues/clients know that you are in a remote location with slower internet, you do not have critically important meetings where you are the key player, you can be flexible and work directly on you computer if the internet drops for a few minutes. I think being in nature can help focus, so if you can be flexible and live with unstable connectivity, I feel it is worth the try. If you need to have high upload speeds to work or flawless meetings, it is probably better to go over the weekend. It also helps if you are the only person working remotely. There is another rental on the property, and we were 3 working while we were there. We did pull it off, but had a few comments. Finally, Carol and Steve are lovely. Very kind, fun and helpful, we liked chatting with them!

Hi I'm Carol,
I moved to the USA from the UK in the early 80's to manage a thoroughbred racehorse farm .
My husband Steve was also in the horse racing industry, and we enjoyed racing all over the USA, until we retired in 2010.
Trail riding is a hobby I've always enjoyed, and no better place than the Gila , with over 3 million acres to explore ( a work in progress ! ) and plenty of wildlife to see.
Being in the middle of trophy elk country, herds pass by most days - spectacular sight.
I took up polo a few years ago and enjoy playing ranch polo at the local club in the mountains, during the summer months.
We love to travel to different countries and to meet new people, so having the guest quarters here made this the perfect next move!

Why they chose this property

We searched several states looking for somewhere to retire , and when we came upon Catron Co in New Mexico, it was a no brainer!
We call this "our little peace of heaven" and hope that once you've visited you will feel the same !
This area has a lot of wild west history, and just a close hike away you'll find amazing petroglyphs , remains of native American Indian pit houses, pottery shards and even arrowheads !
