Built in 1769 by Captain John Harper, this historic row house in Old Town Alexandria is located on the famous cobblestoned Prince Street, just steps from the heart of Old Town and a mere block from the Potomac River. Fully restored and decorated with mostly Federalist Period furniture, the mixture of antiques and reproductions will make you feel like you have stepped back in time!
While historic, this two bedroom, two and a half bath home has all the modern amenities that you might want: a fully equipped modern, well-stocked kitchen, lush bathrooms with wall mounted hair dryers & plenty of towels, a washer & dryer, 2 televisions and wifi. The master bedroom on the 2nd floor is furnished with a queen bed, 2 chests of drawers and a small television. The sitting room across the hall leads into the master bath, with a jetted tub and a separate shower. The 2nd bedroom is located on the 3rd floor. It has two comfy twin beds and its own bathroom with a shower.
Located a short block from King Street, you are just steps from the sights, shops, restaurants, and nightlife of Old Town Alexandria. A quick ride by boat, car, or train and you can find yourself at the National Mall, Georgetown, National Harbour & the MGM Casino, or Mt. Vernon, making Old Town an exceptional home base for visiting our nation’s capital. The King Street Trolley is free and runs between the King Street Metro stop and the City Hall, just a short 2 block walk from the house. A block away is the waterfront of the Potomac. Here you will find water taxis that will ferry you to various places on the Potomac, including Georgetown, the Wharf, National Harbor and Mt. Vernon. Also, a Capital Bike Share station and a bike rental business are located steps from the house, making it easy to explore the many miles of bike trails along the Potomac.

Beauty!

My best friends and I stayed at this treasure to enjoy our 40th high scholl reunion. The place was an absolute gem and our hostess gave us all we needed for a delightful stay. I highly recommend this place which is in the heart of Old Town!

House is cute and has everything you need. Location is unbeatable. Host knocked it out of the park. Very communicative and helpful. Will be the first place we look for when back in the DC area.

Historic charm, can't wait to return!

Beautiful colonial home with modern updates. The primary bath is a dream! Adult son and I spent five wonderful nights here in mid-March. The location is fabulous - literally around the corner from all the Alexandria shops and restaurants and a block from the river walking path. Be sure to take time to walk down the path to the old light house - the most southern point of DC! We returned our rental car the day we arrived because we realized we didn't need a car to get anywhere! Cheryl, our host, checked in via VRBO app prior to our arrival and was always just a text away if we needed anything. She was amazing and has appointed the home with lots of history and guide books if you are inclined to learn about this amazing part of the USA. Staying here was such a treat - we appreciated the historic craftsmanship and were delighted with the modern plumbing, kitchen and WiFi! We'll be back! So much to see and do here.

Excellence in Alexandria

Wonderful experience. Capital bike share 100 feet from front door made for excellent local transport. Stairs are as advertised: be aware of your abilities. Also note that trolley to station is great for evening return from DC, but it doesn’t start until 11 am if you want to venture sooner. We had a great trip here!

Great stay at 103 Prince St

We were in town for our daughter’s wedding around the corner at the Athenaeum and wanted something in the area. We were thrilled with this beautiful home so close to the waterfront and walkable to many attractions in the area. It has everything you need for your stay in the area! Would definitely stay here again!

Wonderful historic home in an area where you can feel the history all around you. Walk 2 blocks to the Potomac river. Climb the cobblestone street. Shop, eat and tour minutes from your beautiful red front door. Cheryl was an amazing communicator, warm and friendly and helpful. It was a great experience,

Best Vrbo Experience Ever

Everything about this property and the host was excellent. The location to Washington DC was unmatched by taking the metro into Downtown. The location to Gettysburg and Williamsburg was very convenient. The property itself was just as advertised. Alexandria is a great place to relax after the a long day. The property was historic and well appointed. Great restaurants nearby. The host was the best and easy to communicate with before the trip began. She was very helpful in every way. We have stayed at countless Vrbo's over the years and this was a top three experience for sure.

Our first ever trip to DC

There really are not the right type of words to succinctly but adequately share how much our family enjoyed staying at Cheryl's gem of a house on Captain's Row. It was way better than the listing described. So many thoughtful touches, a perfect location, very comfortable beds and seating areas, and plenty of room to relax and enjoy our downtime before and after sightseeing. It was such a privilege to be steeped in a deeply historical house with furnishings and art to accentuate the experience. Cheryl was a gracious and attentive host. I've never finished a stay in a vacation rental thinking that I would plan my next trip to the same location around the rental's availability. I will definitely do so for Cheryl's place!

Absolutely gorgeous

We wanted to celebrate some of the holiday in historic Alexandria and experience the Scottish weekend. This property went beyond what we expected. Most rentals are never better than you’ll see in the listing; this property was all it showed and better. Felt like home, walking distance to park, shopping, and restaurants. Bed was super comfy and the bathroom had SO MUCH SPACE. Cannot compliment this host enough.

Wonderful getaway in this immaculate time capsule. The owner was delightful, the check-in seamless, right down to the convenient parking permit. The neighborhood was charming, and our only regret is not having enough time to nose around. We look forward to our next stay!

Great location. Walking to all restaurants and shops. Never moved the car in 3 days! Cheryl was very easy to work with and gave good suggestions for local living and exploring! Steps to upstairs bedroom are steep. Rope handrail is helpful. Modern kitchen and exceptional master bathroom! Nice game table as well.

Like stepping back in time a century or two

I can't say enough good things about this place! Not only is it an historic property on "Captain's Row" in Old Town Alexandria (carefully restored and updated with all the modern conveniences), but Cheryl has decorated and furnished it with extremely good taste and sensitivity for the period. It must have cost a fortune. Right outside the front door on Price Street appears to be the favorite spot for anyone shooting a video or taking photographs. It's the center of the universe in Old Town! Don't miss it! I can't recommend it enough!

About the host

Hosted by Cheryl T Hornyan

Host profile image
Robert & I (Cheryl) live full time in Tempe, Arizona. We both love to travel, enjoy history, and enjoy being able to spend time in Alexandria, where our daughter, her husband, and our grandchildren call home. We have enjoyed getting to know the history not only of Alexandria but of our street and home, as well. I love hosting people from all over because I have built relationships and learned so much from our guests. Like who knew that Gettysburg, PA was an hour and a half from Alexandria?!? I never considered it, being from Arizona, where everything is at least a 2 hour drive or more. Next time we visited, we drove to Gettysburg!

Why they chose this property

Robert & I decided that we wanted to purchase a place near our youngest daughter, who has lived in the DC area for a few years now. While looking at homes in Old Town Alexandria, we fell for the history of this house (built in the 1700s by Captain John Harper), as well as the accessibility of all that Old Town has to offer and it's close proximity to the metro, so that we can easily traipse into DC when we wish without needing a car. We have really enjoyed getting to know the area, learning it’s history, and becoming a part of the community, if only part time.

What makes this property unique

When you open the door to this place, it is like stepping back in time. We fell in love with every quirky thing about this house, from the window between the living and dining areas that slants toward the right, to the crazy staircase that leads to the third floor bedroom. Yet, the place still has all the modern amenities that provide a comfortable place to lay your head after a long day site seeing or visiting with the grandkids. Being steps from lots of fabulous restaurants is an added bonus….in addition to being a block from the Potomac River and the Waterfront Park. It’s a fabulous place for a vacation or a visit with family, which is only confirmed by the number of return guests we get!
