About this property

Secluded skytop retreat with stunning sea and mountain Views

Cliffhanger Cottage was designed, built and loved by Peter Fernandez, the voice of Speed Racer in the original anime TV show. Situated in a National Park, the cottage is perched on a mountain high above the Caribbean Sea. There is a constant breeze and the views are stunning. To the east is Falmouth Harbor, to the south an exotic hillside garden and the open sea, to the west, the headlands and the island of Montserrat with its occasional volcanic activity. To the north, mountains tumble to the sea. A path that leads to the water down below and Rendezvous beach begins at the house. There is a bird's eye view of all sail races in the English Harbor Falmouth region. Classic and race weeks take place right below the south deck. Visitors tell us that we have “the best view in the Caribbean.”

The house is on two levels. The top level has a well-equipped kitchen, living room with marble floors, large three way deck and master bedroom with a double four poster bed. Off the master bedroom is a bathroom and large shower open to the sea.

The lower level is very private with its own deck and a bedroom with twin beds together, comprising a king sized bed. This room has the option of air conditioning or doors open to the sea, garden and deck. Across the deck is a large bathroom with shower and more views to the sea. On a mid level is an additional deck built especially for Yoga.

The house has cell phone signal and internet. With the sound of the sea in your ears, the stunning views you will be truly able to relax into the rhythms of the sea, the breeze, and the tropical birds. Cliffhanger is perfect as a writers' retreat augmented by the miraculous views.

It is also perfect for hikers, as a main trailhead runs near it. Guides can be arranged through our friend Dassa of Footsteps Rainforest Hiking. See his website. A 45 minute walk to the beautiful Rendezvous Beach begins in the garden. Another path goes down steps to private little beach. Occasionally Humpback whales can be sighted just offshore from the deck. At certain times of the year Leatherback turtles lay their eggs on the deserted beaches nearby. Frigate birds and brown pelicans soar past at eye level.

A short distance away is the Spring Hill Caribbean Equestrian Center where horseback rides can be arranged to Rendezvous Beach. Ten minutes away, the villages of Falmouth and English Harbour offer all amenities plus dive shops. A short distance over the hill is the beautiful Pigeon Beach. Sailing can be arranged at the Antigua Yacht Club, even lessons for beginners.

Many simply unwind, unable to leave the deck and its views. The sound of the sea joined by tree frogs at dusk makes for magic. In addition the magnificent sunsets, the night sky with all the constellations reveals itself with perfect clarity.

If however, you get the urge to leave the deck for a bit of night life, Falmouth and and English Harbour offer every kind of restaurant from gourmet to local cooking. After dinner, dance the night away to excellent reggae bands.

In the garden you may find a friendly feline lodger named Jasper. He may be a bit shy at first.

Here are some excerpts from our guestbook:

“Another wedding on your deck—seems to be the house of happiness.”

“We liked it so much we got married on your deck. We are still talking about your fantastic house in the sky.”

March posting by Antigua's environmental group.

'Yes, it’s that time of year again and there are whales aplenty being sighted on a daily basis in our waters.'

During April's Classic Regatta and Sailing Week, racing yachts tack right below the house.

Christmas in Antigua

What a beautiful spot to spend our Christmas. The views are incredible and you can happily lose hours swinging in the hammocks. Would highly recommend you stay here. I am glad we had a 4 wheel drive car due to the road up to the house.

Wonderful

This is an amazing property and my wife and I had a wonderful weeklong stay. T’Mara is super responsive and kind and made it easy on us to relax and enjoy the beautiful island. Rental car is a must, 4x4 would be great for navigating the island and steep bumpy road to the property but we used a 2wd SUV and had no problems. I wouldn’t rent a small low clearance car. Oh and Jasper the cat is an amazing host and we loved having him hang out w us.

In a beautiful position but slightly Showing it’s age now.

We really enjoyed staying at Cliffhanger, the best view in Antigua! Parts of the house are getting tired but we had a lovely stay. T’Mara looked after us very well.

Stunning view!

My husband & I had the most relaxing time at this beautiful home. The view will take your breath away! We hiked to Rendezvous Beach one day for a swim at this beautiful secluded beach. We laid in the hammocks and slept to the sound of tree frogs. T’amara met us at our hotel and guided us to the house, and was great throughout our stay . I loved sharing our stay with Jasper the cat! What a diamond in the rough!

Cliffhanger Happiness: The People Make the Place

We hadn't been to the Caribbean since living there w toddlers. Booked this cottage to celebrate youngest's 30th. Absolute perfection--we're not hotel/resort people. We love quiet & solitude. That's exactly what this is--complete serenity. Location, views and open-window breezes are ideal. Be clear, though, it isn't just the cottage, it's the people.T'mara and Pauline went way beyond expectations to ensure our comfort and happiness, always. My daughter had an allergic reaction & they delivered benadryl & hydrocortisone! Also got to the root of the cause w unbelievable care & compassion. T'mara also helped arrange a surprise cake. If that wasn't enough, her reggae band saluted our bday girl at ShirleyHeights! The Antiguans we met filled our hearts, but none like T'mara & Pauline.Well stocked kitchen. Appreciated basics in place, so no need to shop immediately (again, relaxation). New fridge, hob has seen better days, but worked fine. Beds comfy. Hammocks...yeah. Yoga on lower deck (mats there). Gardens beautifully maintained by sweetest woman. Path down to tide pools & Rendezvous Bay (we drove). Awesomeness.Eating: Mauro's surpassed expectations. Colibri DIVINE. 268Brewery2 food trucks w drinkable beer. Tippys/BeachBum@HalfMoonBay-mahi burgers on the beach!Bring: Kindles/books (hammocks), binies for super-yacht spying, collapsible cooler, 4x4 (Sandy Feet)We lived overseas for 20 yrshave seen the world. Cottages like this are rare. T'mara & Pauline even more so.3

Perfect Paradise

Simply couldn't rate my stay higher. Absolutely loved the Caribbean vibe within the décor & surrounding areas + the view couldn't be more stunning. I even got to see whales jumping in the sea while I sipped on my coffee. I didn't leave during my stay & would have stayed much longer if I could have. Sure hope I have the blessing to stay at Cliffhanger Cottage again sometime soon.

Spectacular Caribbean Views!

We have just returned from a fabulous stay at Cliffhanger cottage. As every other review makes mention of....the views really are spectacular - we loved simply sitting and reading on the deck and enjoying the scenery! There was a constant cooling breeze for the 8 days that we stayed, which helped to make the temperature really comfortable (no problem sleeping in the bedroom which isn't airconditioned). We loved the walks to local beaches, including Rendezvous, which is about 40 mins walk from the cottage. T'mara was super helpful - always very responsive when we had questions ahead of our trip and both she and Noel were really friendly when showing us around. Thanks for a brilliant holiday!!

Paradise

We love Antigua & have been many times but this is the our first visit to Cliffhanger. It is a wonderful house with an amazing 180 degree view of the bay, including Falmouth Harbour. A perfect place to watch the yachts during Race Week. We love the cats, Tom & Jasper. Lovely boys & very soft & they enjoyed being with us & sleeping on the verandah. Katherine ensured that we had everything we needed & looked after us during our holiday. Cliffhanger is a very special place & we look forward to returning for another holiday soon.

Cliffhanger Dream Cottage

Everything about the time we spent in this perfect house was magic! We saw double rainbows daily. The 180 degree view from the porch is amazing- no other houses in sight. The views from inside the house are gorgeous too. The cottage is open air so there is always a breeze flowing thru (and sometimes birds!). The shower on the upper floor is open to the surrounding forest- sublime. And such a treat to have Jasper the cat in residence! As soon as we left we wanted to come back!! And we will…..be back (depending on T’amra’s review😜)!

Absolutely the vest views!

We were fortunate enough to holiday here earlier this month and had the MOST relaxing island vacation. Katherine was so very helpful and pleasant in every question we had regarding our time there. The home was perfect, complete with the two cats. There were wonderful deck areas for every time of the day, whether you wanted sun or not. The home is well equipped with everything needed, and the kitchen even has many staples and spices. Watching the sailboats and yachts comes into the harbor was fun. There is a wonderful 45 minute hiking path right from the back yard to a deserted beach that you must not miss. Truly, the home and Katherine are a treasure!

Perfect home in gorgeous location

We stayed for two weeks at Cliffhanger Cottage, in late June and early July 2023. We were there for a youth regatta that was held out of Nelson’s Dockyard. Staying here was an amazing experience, and we enjoyed it so much. The views are absolutely exquisite, and the sea breeze key us cool all day. We liked having the downstairs bedroom with the air conditioning, because it was a little warm for us at night, considering we were there in summer. I can see how you wouldn’t need that though at other times of the year. Definitely get a 4 x 4 if you are renting here. I could not get a 4 x 4 at the airport. However, there is a car rental place in downtown English Harbor, that we rented from, and they were very reasonably priced. Jasper the cat is super friendly, and we enjoyed having him around, and fell in love with him. 💙 Everyone that works on this property is so nice, and I enjoyed meeting everyone very much. In fact, I enjoyed meeting everyone on the island. Our car broke down one day, and everyone stopped to help. Antigua is a friendly island, and I hope that we have the opportunity to return some day. If so, we will definitely stay at Cliffhanger Cottage!

Relax and unwind

Cliffhanger is exactly that....it is perched on the mountainside with stunning views in every direction! The most beautiful views that my husband and I have ever seen. The deck is our favorite place to relax and unwind. It is so peaceful first thing in the morning with the sun rising over Falmouth Harbour, a gentle breeze and the sound of the waves below. We feel embraced by the vast ocean all around us and the mountains in the horizon. The gardens below are filled with colorful flowers and birds. The house itself is perfect. Open air, lovely decor, small but well equipped kitchen, and a lovely master with four poster bed. The bathroom is one of my husbands favorite spots. He loves to shower with the view of the ocean and mountains. We could stay there all day. But, we do venture out. We love the hikes in the area. They travel along the ocean and go through forts with gorgeous views below. We are beach lovers and this is the island for beaches. All of them gorgeous! Evenings are also amazing with the sunset, the boats lit in the harbour, the star filled sky and the chirp of the tree frogs. There are numerous restaurants in the area. We enjoyed many delicious meals. Katherine, the property manager was available, helpful, and always willing to give suggestions for activities and restaurants. This was our third visit to Cliffhanger and we are planning to return next year!

Stunning views and so peaceful!

My husband and I feel in love with Cliffhanger Cottage, very appropriately named, from the moment we arrived. It was late and Katherine, the caretaker, was patiently awaiting our arrival. She had the cottage open and we walked out onto the deck and had the most breathtaking view of the star filled sky. It was so peaceful. The next morning was even better, with views in all directions, Falmouth Harbor, Montserrat, the gorgeous ocean and her beautifully maintained gardens. It was so quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck drinking our coffee and reading. The temperatures were perfect 75-80 degrees F. with gentle breezes. It was such a gift! The cottage itself, is small but perfect and very well done. Very comfortable, clean, well maintained and equipped with everything you might need. We loved the open shower with the view of the ocean. The entire cottage was so open that we felt like we were hanging on the cliff. We enjoyed the cottage so much we were never in a hurry to leave. We did rent a car and needed it to drive to the beach every day. There are several to choose from and they are all beautiful! Our favorite is Valley Church, it is gorgeous and not crowded unless a cruise ship is in that day. We also enjoyed the hike to Rendezvous. It is a challenging 40 minute hike but worth the journey. We drove into Falmouth every night for dinner and had great meals. Our favorites were Catherines and Sunra. Katherine, the caretaker, is available, very helpful and a pleasure to know. We enjoyed our time at Cliffhanger so much we are returning next year!

You’ll never tire of the view

Staying at Cliffhanger Cottage was so much better than staying in a hotel. First of all the views are unparalleled and you will never tire of them. To have the space and the big deck and a huge showers is better than any hotel suite. T’Mara the manager was so kind & responsive. She not only met us at the airport and directed us all the way to the house, she responded immediately to any small issues we had. The location is perfect, only 10 mins to English Harbor but still out of the busyness of it. You’ll need a small SUV as the road to get to the house is pretty bad but you’ll soon navigate it like a pro. Part of the fun. I would definitely stay here again. Oh and you should really like cats if you’re going to book. This is Jasper the cat’s house and he’s just letting you stay there haha. He’s very sweet and affectionate. We love cats so this was a bonus for us.

Rainbow sunrises and orange sunsets

Beautiful open window/door home. Perfect for us to cook breakfasts and sometimes dinner. Restaurants close in Falmouth and English Harbours. Most mornings had a light mist (less than 5 minutes) to create beautiful rainbows. Sunsets with a beverage in hand sitting on the lounge chair concluded our days. Garden on property is nice and leads to a trail to Rendevous Beach. I'd recommend couples who like to relax, cook, enjoy the outdoors to stay here.

Most unbelievable property in Antigua

Me and my wife stayed here for our honeymoon and could not be happier with this beautiful property! The host was so unbelievably welcoming, Jasper the house cat was an absolute sweetheart and the views from the deck were unlike anything we have either seen in person in our entire lives! We will be coming back to this house, it is straight out of a dream! Everything was fantastic! Falling asleep to the sounds of waves crashing on the shore and waking up to the views of crystal clear teal waters surrounding mountains, oh and the occasional screaming mountain goats hahaa! Everything about this property was spot on and mind blowing! Thank you so much for your hospitality and the experience of a lifetime! This property is absolutely one of a kind!!

Spectacular Views

T’mara was an excellent host, very helpful and considerate. House is charming and well appointed, including kitchen. Views are spectacular. From dusk to dawn house has mosquitoes, gnats, moths, beetles. It is like camping. There are no screens except in downstairs bedroom with AC. Slept there to avoid mosquitoes. Recommend repellent with deet, mosquito coils and citronella candles in the evening.

Amazing views

We loved our stay (January 2020). Everything was as advertised and even better. You wake to views of sunrise over the harbour, lounge in the hammocks watching boats go by, and end your day with beautiful sunsets to the west where you see no other properties. You are surrounded by beautiful gardens that attract hummingbirds. We had planned to visit the island but could not leave this wonderful place! Although we did not use Our rented Jeep much and we would recommend at least an all wheel drive vehicle to get to this Cliffhanger property. Although I’m allergic to cats, I got to love seeing Jasper around and with the open air concept of the house, my allergies were fine.

About the host

Hosted by T'mara Hodge-Henry

Host profile image
My late husband Peter Fernandez and I designed this house in 1988 in the classic Caribbean style, and had it built by the locally-renowned Scottish architect, Eric Smith. This has been our secluded family get-away as our children grew up. We come down from New York for total relaxation, to get away from the harsh winters and the fast pace of the entertainment business.

Why they chose this property

Visitors tell us this house has 'the best view in the Caribbean.' the hammock on the front deck is a classic. To the east you can see Shirley heights and all the sailing yachts in English harbor, while to the west is the untouched rendezvous beach. Straight ahead is the island of Montserrat with its volcanic activity clearly visible from our decks. The house itself is comfortable, elegant, and perfectly nestled into the mountain.

What makes this property unique

The views, the sound-scape of the breaking waves, the tropical birds, and the tree frogs, create a natural rhythm that is unforgettable. It is perfect for those who want a writer's retreat, and for sailors it offers 180 degree direct view of racing events.
