A fabulous place to stay

We have stayed here for the last three years at various times and have had a great time. We really love seeing Julie, Jeremy and of corse Banjo the dog who loves his daily walks. The Gite is close to many of the attractions and wonderful villages, towns and markets in The Loire Valley.

Superb

The gite has a good size kitchen, lounge and spacious bedrooms and the bathroom/shower are well set out. The garden is large with a swimming pool (very good). Julie and Jeremy are very helpful and informative. A great area to stay in with many sites and attractions a short drive away. Highly recommended.

2/10 Terrible

Good location but too many things went wrong

The cottage itself is pretty, with several original features. It is in a good location as long as you have a car. However the interior decor and furnishings are outdated, especially the bathrooms. The double bed collapsed onto the floor the minute my daughter sat on it. Luckily no one got hurt but we had to heave a heavy double mattress onto the floor & my mother & older daughter had to sleep on the floor for the first two nights. (I was heavily pregnant so couldn't offer up my bed). After that, there were way too many other niggles, such as a lack of basic amenities eg no body wash in the bathrooms, no spare toilet roll, mismatched towels which were as rough as sandpaper; central heating downstairs did not work. No mirrors in bedrooms. In the kitchen: there was no sponge/cloth to wipe the cupboard surface with, no washing tablets for the washing machine & the oven didn't work (so we couldn't use either), no plates, no garbage bags, no kitchen roll, no microwave steamer. There were also out of date (expired in 2013) condiment sauces in the cupboard, which suggested a general lack of hygiene. The owners at first tried to remedy the situation (eg fixed the bed and got us plates & toilet roll) but there were just too many things to constantly have to ask them for. My sister's family, who was staying in the next cottage, had similar problems with blocked toilets, malfunctioning washing machines, central heating etc. We finally had a chat with the owners saying that we were rather disappointed with the state of the cottage and would like a partial refund. To add insult to injury, in response, first they said that, as we were the first guests of the season, we should expect that some things would go wrong. They were very hostile after that. The next morning, they accused us of actually breaking the bed as well as a garden chair (which was one of two that were already broken when we arrived)! They also said they'd charge us for the cost of cleaning the cottage. A small sign inside one of the kitchen cupboards states that guests can either clean the cottage themselves or pay euro20 to get a cleaner - we cleaned it ourselves before departure so there was nothing to charge for. Also note that the the heated garden pool, which is listed under the facilities of the "Les Hortensias" tab on the website, can only be used from end of May. It says so on a different page/tab of the website, but it does not mention this fact under the cottage description.

Lovely stay in the Loire Valley

We stayed in the Rosiers for a week. It suited our purposes well. We enjoyed biking one day and rode off to visit the Chateaux and to hike. Julie was helpful with recommendations, etc while we were there. The Rosier is a one bedroom with a loft area that is said to be for children. However, I would caution that the stairs and loft area are not secure enough for lively children. We found that the apartment was pleasant, but outfitted completely from IKEA so things were a little unstable - fixtures loose, etc. The bed linens were IKEA - not cotton so they didn't breathe. We cooked a lot during the week and the kitchen was well outfitted and the little backyard area was very pleasant. We couldn't enjoy the pool since it was late October. All said, we managed just fine and enjoyed the week we were there.

About the host

Hosted by Phil Bignet

Host profile image
Phil and Sandrine Bignet bought the property from their former English owners in November 2021. Phil and Sandrine are totally bilingual and both work in communications, with advanced interpersonal skills. They are very much involved in tourism and will be happy to offer advice on how to make the best use of your stay in the area, should you require it. Phil is a freelance conference interpreter and Sandrine is a Marketing executive with IBM.
We have two children, Marion and Antoine, 28 and 24 years old. Marion works in Paris as a consultant in digital transformation, and Antoine is in his last year of chemical engineering. We also have a very friendly cat named Zephyre and acouple of hens which kids love to pat, and love to eat their eggs.

Why they chose this property

Phil and Sandrine spent 9 months travelling between the Loire Valley, Bourgogne and Charente, before choosing Monteaux last year. Why? Because of its central location, excellent road and rail links. There's a main railway station just a few minutes up the road from where you can take a train to Paris (2 hours) and the main Paris-Bordeaux motorway is just 20 minutes away.
The property offers the best of both worlds: calm and relaxation in the beautiful one acre grounds and the accessability to towns and attractions (Amboise, Tours and Blois).
Amboise, just a 15 minute drive away, has a fantastic Sunday morning market where you can find virtually anything from food (wonderful local fruits and vegetables), plants, clothes, hardware to furniture - and lots more. The castle and the Clos Lucé (Leonardo de Vinci's last home) are centrally located and there's a wonderful choice of cafés, bistros, restaurants in the town centre. In July and August, enjoy the wonderful sound and light (son et lumière) shows in the grounds of the castle.
Amboise also boasts the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe and on the Loire you can rent canoes and kayaks. The current takes you effortlessly downstream and is an experience you'll never forget. You'll soon realise why the Loire Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
