About this property

The Captain's Home: Art and History on the Coast of Maine

Step back in time into Capt. Robert Hichborn's home, an elegant and comfortable 163 year old respite from your travels along the coast of Maine. Centrally located, this historic gem is within an hour to everywhere; from Camden to Rockport, Belfast to Bar Harbor, Augusta to Bangor, and Castine to Deer Isle, you are in the center!

This lovingly cared for home boasts original wide pumpkin pine flooring, 10 foot ceilings, local art, board games, good feels, and very comfy beds and bedding.
The house has a parlor/game room stocked with board games, a comfy living room with ROKU TV and Sofa Sleeper, and a dining room that can seat eight (ask for extra chairs). All of the artwork is original and done by artists within an hour radius.

There is a care taker, Tiffany, who lives in an apartment above the kitchen with her entrance door in the dining room. You will likely not see her unless you need her!

In the summer, the owner, Amanda, is often on premises with her Pitbull Chonkasaurus, Mike. She has a studio on the side of the home.

The stairs to the second floor where three of the bedrooms are located, are steep.

The twin bedroom is directly in front of your bathroom; it is the hallway to the bathroom and has no door.

The gardens are coming along nicely. Please do not allow children or pets play in gardens.

There is a fantastic porch to sit on at night to watch the stars and share stories from your day.

Laundry available for guests staying four or more nights!

Plenty of parking!

I am from Maryland but my heart has been in Maine since I was 18 yrs old! I love this unique area of our country and sharing it with guests; I am happy to interact as little or as much as you would like, and I am also happy to help you put together an itinerary that suits the kind of experiences you'd like to have in this beautiful part of Maine!

Why they chose this property

I love living in this are of Maine because it is smack in the center of everything! You can be home from the airport in 42 minutes, to Bar Harbor in an hour, Lake George in 30 minutes, etc... So whether you want to dine, hike, swim, or meet artisans, it is all close!

What makes this property unique

This is a true captain's home built in 1862. The ceilings are 10 feet tall and the floors and walls are almost entirely original. The home sits on a granite basement (ask to go down!!) and boasts original pumpkin pine variable sized plank floors. Few homes along this stretch of the Downeast can boast so many original features; truly it is like going back in time, only with modern amenities!
