Oceanfront, Private Dock and Harthaven Private Beach - Walk to Noman's, Inkwell

6 Bedrooms, Sleeping Porch, 3 Full Baths, 2 Half Baths, Sleeps 12+

A timeless Martha’s Vineyard escape awaits you at this extraordinary Harthaven home!

This idyllic beach home is the ultimate in serenity and tranquility, but is close to the bars, restaurants and shopping in downtown Oak Bluffs and Edgartown.

The house is a prime example of New England shingle-clad coastal architecture. Inside, it's a charming space, with light flooding in through windows overlooking the ocean. Wood floors and a whitewashed color scheme give it a hint of seaside chic, with comfortable furniture and colorful accents and artwork.

There’s a private yard for eating outdoors on warm summer days, and a fire pit to sit around in the cooler evening air. Tie up your boat at the private dock, and use the kayaks and stand-up paddle boards for fun on the water.

You'll be staying across the street from Noman's - just a mile from downtown Oak Bluffs and four miles to downtown Edgartown. Take the bike path one mile to Oak Bluffs, you will find lots to do between the famous Flying Horses, MVCMA gingerbread cottages, Ocean Park, Back Door Donuts, the bowling alley, the Arts District and the game room. In the other direction on the bike path, you will go past the Jaws Bridge, and into Edgartown with its captains house, the Old Whaling Church, art galleries and shopping.

Back at the house, the large living room has a stone fireplace, the eat-in kitchen has an island with seating for 6, the dining room seats twelve of your friends and family, and the six bedrooms and a sleeping porch allow for many guests. There are four enclosed porches, two on the first floor, and two on the second floor. A large private yard provides plenty of space for outdoor activities. The house is a member of the Harthaven Association, which allows use of the association's private beach, harbor, and tennis court. Central A/C and heat will keep you comfortable in all types of New England weather.

LIVING AREA

Gather in the sunlit living area after a day enjoying the island! Two sofas by the wood-burning fireplace and three armchairs by the windows create inviting areas. Two indoor porches have additional seating areas. There is a Smart TV with cable, wifi, and lots of games.

KITCHEN and PANTRIES

The modern kitchen is well appointed with a commercial Wolf stove having 6 burners & a griddle, two ovens, a Bosch dishwasher, a Kitchen Aid refrigerator with ice maker, granite countertops, and windows overlooking the herb gardens. An island has seating for six.

The butler's pantry, between the kitchen and dining room, has a bar sink and a wine refrigerator as well as a soda stream, a microwave, coffee maker and plenty of glassware and china.

Outdoors there is a charcoal barbecue.

A pantry has a large freezer for your bags of ice and all the fish you catch - as well as a variety of kitchen appliances.

A washer and dryer takes care of your laundry needs.

DINING

A large wooden farmhouse table with benches and dining chairs seats 12 guests.

BEDROOMS and BATHROOMS

This home easily sleeps more than 12 guests between the six bedrooms and two sleeping porches.

The primary bedroom is on the second floor overlooking the ocean, has a king-sized bed and a TV with Roku. The primary bathroom is ensuite with a tub/shower combo.

The "Orange Bedroom", also on the second floor, has a king-sized bed and an ensuite half bath.

The "Blue Bedroom", on the second floor has a king-sized bed and overlooks the ocean.

The "Gold Bedroom", on the second floor has a Queen bed, and overlooks the second floor deck.

The "White Bedroom" on the second floor has a full-sized bed with a canopy for the princess of the house.

On the first floor, a bedroom with a queen-sized bed can be configured into a private suite with a porch and bathroom with walk-in shower, if desired.

There is a shared bathroom on the second floor with a walk-in shower and a door to the upstairs deck, which has an outdoor shower.

OUTDOOR AREA & AMENITIES

Enjoy your morning coffee on the large deck overlooking the Osprey nest and ocean.

Afternoon cocktails become evening dinners around the tables seating 16 or more.

A large lawn gives space for croquet, bocce and corn hole, all of which are provided.
Sit in the sun on lounge chairs, or gather around the fire pit for evening 'smores and sunset.

A second outdoor shower on the edge of the trees makes it convenient to rinse off after beach days.

EXTRA PERKS & MORE DETAILS

Guest amenities include five stand-up paddle boards, three kayaks, Wi-Fi, beach chairs and towels - all provided in the rental.

The driveway allows parking for many cars.

The house is located on the bike / walking path from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown, which gives easy access to both towns.

Nomans restaurant is a short stroll away for drinks, lunch, dinner, and lots of lawn games.

Tranquil and Charming

We stayed at this gorgeous home for a week. The property was gorgeous, conveniently locTed, and filled with tremendous amenities that made our whole stay comfortable and convenient. The house is so unique with so many places to cuddle up with a book and take in the gorgeous views of the inlet and the ocean.

Excellent family house, especially fun for kids

We spent a week here in August with an extended, multigenerational family group. The house has a ton of sleeping spaces and bathrooms, and a well stocked kitchen. The interior design features are remarkable and the house has real character. It’s an older home but many of the design elements complement its age. The kitchen is updated and it’s overall very nice. Property manager was great. A couple of things broke during our stay and they were quick to provide replacements (eg one of the kayaks). The dock and channel provide endless entertainment for the kids to safely play outside. The air conditioning was impressively effective. Overall I would rate this house a 9.5/10 with the only deduction due to there being a lack of sound insulation so it was a little hard to keep everyone asleep if anyone was awake. But this is manageable and overall, we would return, and would recommend.

Great home- fantastic setting

Loved staying in this natural, charming home in what felt like a bird sanctuary! The setting is spectacular and the homeowners provided all of the toys you could ask for, including: paddle boards, kayaks, boogie boards, etc! There were so many fantastic bedrooms to chose from- all with fantastic views of the waterway and ocean. The only negative piece of feedback has to do with the lighting in the kitchen and living room. It is bizarrely dark- making it difficult to navigate and enjoy comfortably in the evenings. (We suspect this had something to do with conserving energy... ultimately not that big of an issue).

Thanks for the Opportunity.

We enjoyed out stay. The only improvement I would recommendation is to have better lighting in the house, particularly on the main floor where there were only the yellow lights.

Beauty and Charm

My family of four plus in laws stayed over a beautiful Fourth of July weekend. It was a special place - a turn of the century home that has been lovingly cared for. An amazing flow and grace on first floor. Tons of space to explore. The land backing up to inlet and 2 min walk or swim to private beach could not be better. Everyone was happy. Convenient drive to edgartown , mile to oak bluffs.. steps to Nomans. I wish the main street wasn’t so busy but you can’t see it from the home as it’s set far back and no visibility through the woods… and you totally forget about it. I’m a photographer and the light and character of the home was a dream. My personal favorite was sitting on the various screened in porches and listening to the birds. An amazing osprey family and nest to watch too.

Idyllic Vineyard home and setting

The home is a perfect setting for both active and relaxing times with family and friends. We loved the interior design of the home and the outside spaces were great for our family. The 6 & 7 year olds spent most of their “idle time” playing on and around the dock catching crabs and the teens enjoyed hanging on the very very close beach across the water. The location of the house was perfectly close to both OAK bluffs and Edgartown, which is where we spent most of our time. Thank you to the owners/hosts for a wonderful time and a very clean and well appointed home!

Amazing place. Incredible host.

This place is its own oasis. Worth every penny. We were AMAZED at how well outfitted the house was with cooking utensils to fun games to paddle boards, etc. With the dock; inlet; tidal cove; coastal feel to the house, 5 min walk to beach on cool wooded trail; privacy; short distance to so many things to do; walks or bike ride to Jaws Bridge;….it’s a must stay.

Iconic experience.

Words defy the experience of this magnificent Vineyard home. Close to everything and yet private and away from the tourist hustle & bustle in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. Our hosts were gracious and the place was well stocked with everything anyone might need. We absolutely loved it. Our heartfelt gratitude to the Sullivan and Keefe families for sharing their lovely home with us — thank you!

A perfect place to be

The house is beautifully situated, with a wide view of the bay and the sea beyond. We spent many hours sitting on the deck, under a big umbrella, simply enjoying the view and the air, but we also walked to the nearby beach - a 5 minute walk from the house. Inside the house all the rooms are lovely and comfortable with sofas in every room so our large family could spread out with readers in one space, tv watchers in another, game players in another. Julie, our host, was always gracious and helpful whenever we needed help, but otherwise left us alone. It could not have been nicer!!

Worth Every Penny

Absolutely beautiful and well appointed home. The convenience of the water sports was only rivaled by the convenience of the bike-walking-jogging path into Oak Bluffs in one direction and Edgartown on the other. Gorgeous views; fantastic amenities; comfortable and inviting decor. We stayed there during my daughter’s wedding week and hosted a few events and it was PERFECT. Loved every minute and it was worth every penny.

Fantastic vacation

I’ll start by saying Julie is wonderful. She was wonderful to work with! The house is amazing. Being on the inlet was perfect and having the ospreys right there was an extra special treat. We were a group of 15 and we fit easily. The kayaks and paddle board were enjoyed by everyone’s the deck was our go to place as the table easily fit us all. We were close enough to town to walk or bike; Uber was also a great alternative for those that want to ride. It didn’t hurt that the weather was perfect, but even if it wasn’t Julie had lots of games etc if we had to be inside.

One of a Kind

This rental is a very thoughtfully restored and preserved historic home with many amenities and modern conveniences as described on the listing. The location and setting are outstanding offering an opportunity for a very unique "getaway" for a large group spending time on a very unique island.

Absolutely PERFECT!

This house is every bit as unbelievably beautiful as it looks in the pictures. Even more actually! We came with a big group and every one of us just could not get over how quaint, beachy, homey and simultaneously very BIG the house was. We slept with 17 people comfortably. We rented bikes and rode down the beach (20 minute bike ride to the open ocean) and rode all the way to Edgartown on the most beautiful ride I've ever been on. We had dinner on the back deck overlooking the water. We jumped off the dock and swam to the little island across the water. We walked down to OB for drinks and food. Honestly, had the weather not been great we would have fun too! There is a big fireplace in the living room and the house is great for celebrating. The caretaker was there and was such a gentleman and helped us with everything we needed. I cannot wait to come back. I can't say enough good things about this house. My first VRBO experience and such a pleasure!

About the host

Hosted by Julie Keefe

Host profile image
This historic summer cottage was built in the 1920’s by William and Martha Hart, of the Stanley Tool Company, as a wedding present to their daughter Martha Hart, when she married Ethelbert Allen Moore, of the Benjamin Moore paint company. The cottage has been beautifully renovated while retaining the most important elements of its original design.

The Sullivan and Keefe families acquired the property in 2013 and have had many special times at our home. We are happy when other families can also create forever memories.

Why they chose this property

Experience the best of Martha's Vineyard! This is a very private, large, oceanfront home with easy access to Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, the bike path, and the bus route. There is something for everybody here.
