Close and convenient to convention center

My team and I were attending a conference at the convention center. This property is secure and safe. The gate has a lock as does the building and apartment. The neighborhood has wonderful restaurants and bars. It was a quick walk to the convention center. It had two bedrooms. The other two beds were in community rooms and are pull-outs. The balcony was a great place to have coffee in the morning. We did have to climb three flights of stairs to get to the property, but the neighborhood was quiet. We had a wonderful time and would stay again.

Great location - Amazing Host!

It’s a beautiful historic home within walking distance of the French Quarter. Perfect size for our family of 6. The Host was absolutely fantastic. We had originally booked a different VRBO and with less than 24 hours til check in they could not be contacted. So out of fear of not having somewhere to stay we were forced to book this last minute and the host was immediately responsive and provided us with clear communication. Everything was great the location itself as well. The home was clean, large enough, with all the necessary amenities. There are a lot of stairs.

Convienient townhouse to French quarter, CBD and Garden District

We needed a place near Gallier Hall and this was perfect. We visited the WW2 museum and its rooftop bar! Close drive to Magazine and St Charles Ave shops restaurants and other rooftop bars we wanted to enjoy. Only 1.5 miles to Frenchman street. Perfect accommodation for our group of 6 and visiting guests. Everyone thought it was perfect.

Great apartment short walk to WW2 museum

Just returned from a family wedding in NOLA. The host was very helpful and quick to respond to my question. Location was convenient and parking was a breeze. Highly recommend this for families as long as you can handle the stairs. Highly recommend.

The location was great and having access to off street parking was the best. We walked to almost everything we did. The cleanliness was my only issue. Bathroom on main floor was not cleaned the best. And i wasn't to sure of the sheets on the main bed.

Great location, very roomy, great property manager

Nice pet friendly accommodations within walking distance to the activities. Just far away enough to enjoy the quiet. We felt very, very SAFE here with the gates as well as the cameras pointed at our vehicle. Lots of restaurants in the vicinity. Short walk to cruise terminal mall. We did Uber the mile to the French Quarter a couple of times but only because we were tired of walking. About 8-9$ so not bad at all. Ample space for all of us. Property manager was very accessible to answering all of our questions. Thank you for hosting!

Great, historical place in a good location!

This apartment was a perfect place to stay with 2 coworkers for a convention this past week. It was too hot to walk on the mornings of the convention, or we would have easily walked. This was close to the street care line and not too far from the French quarter. It was very clean and the beds were super comfortable!

Top-notch property!

The size, location, and management of this vrbo property is everything I hoped for and more. Communication from the owner is prompt and helpful and check-in and check-out were very straightforward. The space is clearly well cared for and stocked with necessities. The location is wonderful for walking to destinations and also close to the tram line. Highly recommended!

House is as perfect as the description! We were a party of 8 and there was plenty of room for us all to be comfortable. Location was great and walking distance to all the places we wanted to visit. Damon was excellent with communication, instructions as well as accommodating us for an early check-in! Thanks so much! Will definitely stay here again!

A bit shabby, but okay overall

The location of the property is near the convention center/WW2 museum, which means that it's actually pretty quiet at night. If there were people staying in the other units in the building while we were there, we never heard them. There's a nice little market a few blocks away where you can stock up on any supplies you might need. It's also a pretty far walk to the Quarter, if that's where you're wanting to spend most of your time. The property manager was responsive and the HVAC system (there are separate units for the two sleeping areas upstairs) worked nicely. Calling this a "4 bedroom" is really kind of pushing it. It's really two bedrooms - only one of which has a closet - and then pull out beds - one in the living room, and the other upstairs near the only bedroom with doors and a closet. To use the balcony, you have to go through the downstairs bedroom. The furniture overall is a bit worn and shabby, some of the linens had holes in them, and simple things like having Kleenex on hand and replacing burned out light bulbs weren't taken care of. The wiring in the upstairs bathroom was wonky, and you couldn't turn on the lights over the mirror without turning on the exhaust fan, and then, they only came on very dimly. It was okay for a couple of nights, but not sure if I'd stay here again unless there were some significant upgrades made.

Need to be renovated

The house has not been properly renovated. 2 people in are group received cuts to the bottom of our feet from the old cracked loose floorboards. Not what I would expect for the price.

Unique building/ Great location

This was our first time visiting New Orleans. We loved the apartment. Very spacious to accommodate our large family of 8. Very nicely decorated. Damon was helpful and answered all questions quickly. Would definitely recommend. Plenty of bath towels and linens for our large group. We could have used more hand and wash cloths. The apartment's main areas were clean but the apartment needs a thorough cleaning.

What a wonderful stay!

Everything about this property was perfect for our family trip. We were six adults traveling and the house was perfectly comfortable for all of us to have enough space. We never felt like we got in each other's way. However, what made this experience outstanding was the attention from our host Damon. He was always available to help. We had a minor issue with the air conditioning and he arranged to have it fixed with in an hour after we arrived. Also we left behind a passport and he was kind enough to mail it over to Texas immediately. Definitely the best host I've ever come across. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

I have lived in New Orleans for past thirty years. Whether you are a family or large group coming for an event or a getaway or a couple wanting to stay near the French Quarter I have many options across my portfolio of properties. We treat our guests like family and do everything to address problems and do maintenance to prevent problems from arising. I love when guests have an incredible experience and appreciate my curation of historical and modern photos capturing the history of the properties great City of New Orleans. All of our staff live in the City and are ready to answer any questions about nearby points of interest and attractions.

Why they chose this property

The elegant townhouse at 838 Camp Street was designed by James Harrison Dakin (1806-1852), an influential architect in New Orleans who also designed the landmark St. Patrick’s Cathedral down the street. The land was first owned by Gasquet, Parish & Co., a commission merchant company largely responsible for the initial development of the American Sector. Construction on this townhouse, originally one of nine sister “rowhouses,” began in the early 1840s.

The first known inhabitant of the townhouse was Walter Cox, a cotton merchant and owner of the cotton firm W. Cox & Co. established in 1858. It appears that the Civil War resulted in Cox’s firm going bankrupt, as his home was sold in a sheriff’s auction in 1867. The house was purchased by attorney Alfred J. Philips, partner in the esteemed New Orleans firm of Roselins & Philips. Sometime during the 1870s, ownership of the property transferred from Philips to his brother-in-law, influential attorney John Blackstone Cotton from Georgia, who married Alfred’s younger sister Sophia in 1852. Blackstone served as a New Orleans City Attorney in 1850, as a District Judge (1853-1857) and as Superintendent of Elections (1857-1858). During the Civil War, Cotton served as a Confederate Army Officer from 1861 until he fell ill in the field in 1862.

Margaret Robinson Barnett (1887–1977) purchased the property in May of 1921. Margaret owned and operated “Dixie Stove Works” out of what is now the property’s commercial space at 840 Camp. The company boasted itself as “the South’s largest manufacturer of stove parts.” Margaret and her husband also housed “Roomers” in the properties residential units beginning in 1930. These renters hailed from such varied places as Germany, New York, Louisiana, Minnesota, and South Dakota. The residence had become primarily commercial in the latter half of the 20th century, with Dixie Stove Works as its last commercial occupant.
