Local things nearby are Tangelwood, Lenox, Stockbridge and all things Berkshire as well as skiing at Catamount (6mi), Butternut and Jiminy Peak. Hiking abundant in Taconics and Western Berkshires. Bash Bish Falls a popular favorite in nearby Copake Falls, NY.
Wonderful restaurants in Gt Barrington, Hudson, Hillsdale, Copake, Chatham, and our favorite for a special meal: the John Andrews restaurant between Hillsdale and So. Egremont on Rt23.

House rules manual in welcome basket in kitchen, as well as local maps and activities pamphlets, etc. Soapstone Fireplace Stove may only be used if you agree to follow the owners rules for lighting and maintaining the fireplace. Instructions on fireplace mantle.
Local tap water is tested safe for drinking, but we provide bottled drinking water if you prefer. It is located throughout the kitchen. Coffee/tea provided.

It’s an old house, with old house charm!!! It can have a musty smell when first entering if house has been unused for awhile. Please open windows to air out. The “must” will dissipate in short order. 3 Air-purifiers are located in kitchen, upstairs and living room.
There are fans for summer, although the evenings can be cool and often chilly so you may not need them.
A Firepit is on the patio for your perusal. Instructions and cooking grate and poker are in the mudroom next to the rakes. (Please clean cooking grate after use). Wood and kindling outside as well as in the mudroom.
The evening holds the cacophony of nature: pond frogs, birds, crickets and an occasional coyote howling in the distance. Deer can wander through the yard along with bunnies, red squirrels, groundhogs & chipmunks. It’s a perfect renewal for the soul.

Entire home available for rental except locked bedroom and closets of the owner.
Artist-size grand piano available in separate music room for an extra charge.

A peaceful paradise

The house is utterly charming, cozy, and comfortable. The country surroundings are very scenic and serene. The ample backyard provides a lot of privacy for contemplation, reading, conversation, or whatever you prefer. Since we are history buffs, we liked the fact that the original part of the house was built in 1791, yet the house provided the modern conveniences that we wanted. The owner was very helpful in answering our questions. We had a very refreshing and rejeuvenating stay!

Beautiful old world charm! We really enjoyed our stay!

The house was very comfortable and very clean. It can accommodate quite a few people with room to spare. Communication with Delana was excellent and she went to great lengths to make sure we had what we needed before our stay. Thank You Delana! We will be back!

Perfect for our needs

We used this property for a golf trip/reunion - 6 guy who worked together back in the 80's making the trip to share some good times and bad golf. Sure, it's not the fanciest place around, but it was quiet, private, very comfortable and a perfect place for us to relax and reconnect after so many years. Being able to hang out in the living room and swap stories and memories in such a comfortable, homey setting made the entire week a great success - thank you to the owners for letting us stay there for the weekend! Some things you'll want to know -- there's no A/C, but fans kept the place cool enough during a very hot weekend. The place is old - built in 1791. There's a stove, microwave, coffee maker, fridge, etc -- but if you want fancy, this ain't it. It's serviceable, functional and it's clear the owners do love the place and take good care of it. The house has a shallow well pump, old plumbing and a small water heater - so we took quick showers spaced out. Water pressure was minimal but again, it was functional and somehow it all added to the charm of the place. We had 4 bedrooms, a pull out couch and used another couch for our group of 6 - all very comfortable and we never felt cramped. We enjoyed the fire pit on the back patio (I hope that was okay) and enjoyed the very private setting. If you don't need luxury, but do want a nice, inexpensive and enjoyable place for a trip, I recommend the property very much. I'm not so sure it's great for children, but for our group, it helped make our trip memorable.

old farmhouse with all of the comforts of home

My family and I needed a place to stay for a hockey tournament. This was perfect for us. The wood burner was Fantastic and the beds were comfortable. Everything you need to cook a meal is in the kitchen (except the food, of course) the market is about 5 min away. This was perfect for us. The cons: Remember you are in an old farmhouse. There are creaks and drafts and critters outside. The water pressure is low but not terrible. And the shower head is low, so my 6 ft son had to bend to get his head under the shower . Overall this is a great place to stay.

Nice old charming house

we liked the house very much, specially the old charm. Delana was very easy to communicate. Lots of antique things in the house. Everything was in place. Beds were really comfortable, bathroom were clean. Living room and dining room was perfect for our group. Though we didn't like the muddy smell (Delana explained the reason), but it will go away after spending 30min into the house.

About the host

My late husband and I purchased this property as a vacation home 12 years ago. We closed on Valentine's Day 2005. I got married late in life, at age 50, my first marriage, his second. We are both professional classical musicians. This property was a special retreat from the city for us where we could unwind, relax and practice our musical instruments in peaceful surroundings. Since his death 2 years ago I've tried to think of ways for extra income. A friend suggested Home Away.

Why they chose this property

We wanted a place that was close enough to the city that we could easily get away for a couple days per week. I had spent some time in this area in years past, so we began our search in Columbia County. It was the third house we saw. We loved the name of the road, which has a bit of local history from an 1812 War battle, plus that the railroad tracks used to run in back of the property. A former owner used to come up every weekend on the train, and talk the conductor into slowing down so he could hop off right at the base of the driveway! The catcher for us was that there is a private room with a private entrance where I could have my piano studio; and my husband could have his bassoon studio in the back bedroom on the second floor. We never had a lot of money to upgrade the place, but enjoyed the quirkiness of the uneven floors, the 1791 cellar that is carved-out-with-a-spoon (one of the original sections of the house, and originally outside) and of course the beautiful grounds that are totally in nature, yet close proximity to the road, and very near Hudson and Gt. Barrington where live all amenities.

What makes this property unique

This property, as we were told, had always been a family home. It's very comfortable. There's room for privacy, and room to come together. There's a peacefulness to the property that I have always found comforting.
In the old days there used to be an artisan well in the backyard. The pond was put in before we bought it. The cattails have currently claimed it, but in April when all the frogs return it is the most sublime cacophony of sound all night long!
I love looking out onto the field across the way in the morning light, seeing the starry sky so clearly in the back yard at night, and catching glimpses of wildlife enjoy the property as well: bunnies, turkeys, and occasional deer, especially to feed at the apple tree.
I hope you will enjoy your visit to "our" home as much as we have and embrace it's uniqueness, warmth, and charm.
