About this property

Base Camp Adventure Lodge, King Bed, View of River

This is a lodge. There are four rooms. Two on the north side and two on the south. They each have their own entrance from the outside, own bathroom, microwave, and mini fridge. Common areas are kitchen, dining room, and living room but most cook outside on the grills and eat at multiple outdoor locations around the property. Room has a king bed.

Description

It's almost unbelievable. The river and beach are a short hike. Kayaks at the river. Three doubles and six singles. Side by sides, take you to the Wind Caves and Chicken Corner. Three to four hours for $200. There are unlimited hikes from the property and many more near by.

There is so much wildlife it's hard to keep track of. In addition to the hundred or so birds, squirrels, and chipmunks that come to eat each day, there's the man himself, Kobae. Kobae is the 210 pound security tortoise that lives here and when he's not hanging out on the porch, or chowing down on romaine, he'll be looking for someone to go hiking with. With evening the front porch comes alive. Ringtail, skunk, fox, and raccoon all eat nightly either on or just off the front porch. You're welcome to hang out at the fire pit or sit in gravity chairs and view the night sky but many a guest has spent their evening watching all the critters that come to the porch. For kids especially it's an incredible experience.

The night sky, the incredible views, the critters, the side by sides, the beach, the river, kayaking, Wind Caves, hiking, all here. Nobody else has what Base Camp has or even comes close. Worry about other parts of your trip but don’t worry about this part. I live here pretty much 24/7/365 and I’ve been sharing it with guests for eighteen years. You want an adventure, not just staying somewhere, you’ve found it.

Now, having said all that, it’s quiet, off the grid, and you want to get away, that’s here too. Some folks just sit on the porch and unwind, enjoying the landscape, watching the rafts and kayaks come down the river or finding a spot around the property to just sit and read. There’s no shortage of those spots. I’ve spent many a morning hiking out to a different place each day and reading.

Whatever you want to do, all you have to do is walk out the door. That’s special.

See you soon,

Tom

Base camp adventure
Highlights of the property include separation from tourists, scenic views and hikes, free kayaks for use on Colorado river, and inexpensive side by side rentals. This is a Get A way Lodge that we recommend for those wanting to get away and enjoy nature.

Adventure Stay
We enjoyed our stay, but had a true adventure getting to and from Base Camp! Roads are wild, but fun with the right vehicle. Our host entertained us with crazy stories that are probably true and wild animal experiences like no other place we have ever stayed. We enjoyed using the kayaks and lounging in the yard to watch the magnificent sunsets. The stars there are truly spectacular! Best views all around!

Great experience!!
This place was beautiful! The views are amazing!! The drive in is not for the faint of heart!! But base camp was worth it!! My grandson’s loved it too! Side by side rides and watching the animals get fed at night was the best! The night sky is like nothing you’ve ever seen!! I highly recommend this place!

Best Experience in Moab
We loved staying in the lodge, meeting Tom and all his animal friends! Our room had everything we needed and the view was spectacular. We really wanted to camp while we were in Moab are but with the heat of July that was really not possible - staying at Tom’s allowed us to get that backcountry camping experience but with AC, showers and a cozy place to escape the heat. Kayaking on the river was a ton of fun and we loved exploring the off roading trails to the wind caves and chicken corners. Highly recommend having a high clearance vehicle able to withstand the terrain, we had a jeep wrangler and the road was easier than expected. We will be back again!

Base Camp is the off grid place in Moab!
Tom is a great host with knowledge of the area. He is always ready to help. The lodge is off the beaten path from all other crowded places in the Moab area. If you want peace and quiet during your Moab stay, Base Camp is the place.

Bastion of solitude
We had a great time staying at Base Camp. Tom was just the kind of host that helped make our stay enjoyable! Kind and a great source of info. The property was clean and comfortable. Driving over the pass could be a challenge for vehicles without good clearance and that was shared up front by the host. Visitors are wise to heed his advice. The area around base camp is great for hiking and exploring. Overall we had a fantastic stay and would be inclined to enjoy this special spot again!

Funky, fun, and friendly
A beautiful, unique, off-the-grid lodge with an amazing owner, staff and mascot (Kobae!). The drive there was a bit rough, but Tom and Theresa helped us out - can’t say enough about this place. 10/10 would recommend and would return.

Incredible/amazing stay
Tom was a wonderful and informative host. Staying at base camp was much better than we ever hoped. We were looking for seclusion and we got it. Deep in the canyons beyond Moab we found that we didnt need to leave once we got there to see the beauty the area has to offer. It’s a good trip getting out there (1hr from Moab) and you need at least awd. Room was clean, the people were friendly, no shortage of things to see. Would stay again in a heartbeat.

Base Camp
Staying at Base Camp was a great experience. It gave us an opportunity to explore Utah beyond the national parks. Tom and Theresa were great host and nice to talk to. The road is definitely an experience but we were able to get down it in 40-50 minutes with a Jeep Wrangler. We rented a side by side from them and were able to explore trails in the canyon. Wish we had more time there to explore all they had to offer.

Gem of a place
We are living in Utah for 2 months and wanted to stay near Moab/Arches but we didn’t know what to expect coming here. We were pleasantly surprised, enjoyed going to Chicken Corners and playing disc golf one of the days. Tom is a wholesome man and he’s got a gem here. Like many other reviews, we suggest hanging here and then going to explore Arches on the day of your check out. Hoping we can return again one day.

Beautiful area!
We just wanted a place to relax and the scenery is amazing. We did one hike to the wind caves , but you could do more if you want. The room was clean and had everything we needed. Loved Tom’s pet tortoise and his nightly feeding of the animals. The road is a little rough, but we just went slow in our Kia Sorento and made it there and back without a problem. I loved my stay at base camp! Thanks Tom for leverything ,you have an amazing place.

The Heart of Utah
This was our most memorable part of our Utah trip. The wildlife, scenery, and the host made this something to remember. I’m so glad we stayed here, even though the drive to get there surprised us. Coming from Florida, we have never driven such rough terrain. It wasn’t bad, but definitely put it into your itinerary to rock climb on the side of a mountain. We made sure to go back to our room before sundown so we could make the drive safely. 10/10 would stay again.

Just book it!
Tom's place is out in the remote wilderness. Our party of four had a fabulous time and I know my wife and I will return one day. We stayed in the lodge and though each room has a private bath the rest of the house is shared. That is actually a good thing as you meet wonderful people and get to interact more with the host and staff if you want. We found this very helpful. If your car has the clearance of a Subaru Cross Trek you will be fine. We had a jeep but our family members drove out in a Toyota RAV4. Really the trip out is a blast and is kick ass gorgeous. If you like the outdoors and quite with plenty of hiking and fossil hunting, this is the place. Tom, the host is a great guy and very helpful should you need help. Thanks for a great stay Tom!

An A+++ Experience
WOW!!! Words cannot even express how amazing our trip to Base Camp was. Base Camp is not just a place to stay it is an experience, an adventure....simply magical. Tom is so knowledgeable about life and the area. Kobae and Jax are pretty special, too. The nightly feedings of the skunks, raccoons and foxes was so fun to watch. The hikes on property and next to the property were our favorite hikes of the trip. We had the best time and are grateful for the memories that were created at Base Camp. Thank you Tom!

Amazing
The views are incredible. Tom, Colin, and Lydia were always around to answer questions or help us navigate the property. We took out a side-by-side for $165 foot 4 hours. Totally worth it. There were life vests for children, which was nice for my 8yo. Lots of fresh water available and plenty of space in the large mini fridge. Wifi was reliable. We used the AC unit in the room to sleep when it got really hot at night, but we usually were able to turn it off after a few hours. Tom is an amazing host and has an idyllic place in the middle of the wonders of America.

Great Spot Off the Beaten Path
Base Camp is a great property with lots of hiking and great amenities. When we booked this place, we did not 100% understand what we were getting ourselves into, but we are really glad we stayed at Base Camp. When I say "off the beaten path," I mean you will be off-roading for a good 2-6 miles of your drive to Base Camp. The drive is not for the faint of heart, but as long as you take your time and have good (6 inches or more) ground clearance, you should make it. I would NOT plan on driving to and from Moab more than arriving and leaving, however. We originally were going to hang around camp and do some sight-seeing in town during our stay, but we quickly changed plans after making the drive in and not wanting to repeat that endeavor more than once. There are several hikes around the property, all of which are fun. Easy access to the river, and there's a great disc golf course for those interested. We really enjoyed getting to know our fellow lodge-stayers, and the individual rooms were neat and tidy. It's hard to beat sleeping on a real bed and taking a nice shower after a hard day of hiking. The communal spaces were also perfect for cooking in and relaxing out of the sun during the heat of the day.

A true diamond in the rough
This was out most comfortable stay while doing the grand circle. Bed and pillows are super comfy with thick fluffy towels and a bit of luxury in the middle of nowhere. Common areas are inviting and comfortable. Owner is a wealth of knowledge and can keep you busy right on sight with incomparable hikes, excursions and ATV trips as well as fishing and disc golf. You are basically living the Canyon Lands the entire trip. Don’t expect to run back and forth to town, there’s really no need. Just enjoy the opportunity to exist in this amazing place. As for the road, we did it in a Chevy Blazer and never took it out of two wheel drive. It really is a clearance thing, but watch your track and you’ll be fine…it’s just more tedious without height. It’ll be a breeze with a Subaru Outback or taller. If your considering it, DO IT!!

Magical Getaway
The road over Hurrah Pass was tough, but our fears were more about the bottom of our Subaru than the heights. There were a couple of nerve-wracking drop-offs, but despite our primitive instincts the risk is minimal. Both the drive and arrival revealed awe-inspiring scenery in a peaceful setting without crowds. We're usually big hikers, and there are many options, but it was hot and we were tired after a big business trip, so we mostly strolled near the lodge - which has plenty of beautiful rock formations, hogans, and river views to entertain. We rented one of the owner's side-by-sides for a day-trip to the Wind Caves - full of delightful surprises - and Chicken Corners - a true grand finale. One narrow section had a sheer-drop that tested our mettle but rewarded us with jaw-dropping views and echoes. At the lodge, we enjoyed hanging out with rock squirrels, white-tailed antelope squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, Eurasian collared doves, ravens, lizards, and Kobae the resident tortoise. The lodge is dusty, which makes sense with the canyon's occasional high winds and miles of desert sands. The operators seem to have their own philosophy about how much clutter and haphazard cleaning guests might expect on an adventure. And the kitchen can use a few more utensils. But our room was comfy, the owner was colorful and accommodating, and it was all worth it to experience one of the most magical places on earth and occasionally feel you have the magic to yourself.

Insanely treacherous drive!
Based on reviews, I communicated I didn’t want to put my children in any danger, single mama reassured my Dodge Ram 1500 would be fine, I made the trip. It was so incredibly terrifying, I insisted we get a ride back up at the end of our stay. Now, I have to buy a new front end valence since mine was half ripped off, my license plate is at a 90 degree angle and incur a mechanic bill for a noise in my under carriage! Oh, that said, the stay was magical. Wonderful hospitality, gorgeous views, and very tranquil. It’s just unfortunate. you have to go through hell to get to paradise. My best advice, rent a 4 wheel drive, short beefy jeep that can get banged all to hell on someone else’s dime, and DO NOT chance driving after dark. Better yet, drive a side-by-side. There’s NO turning back once you start, so make sure you have experience driving cliffside razorbacks. Allow at least an hour and a half of white knuckle driving to go 14 miles! All the guests commiserated upon arrival, kids and I cried. It was an amazing vacation iand Adventure, but not one I EVER want to repeat.. I just wish other reviews were more honest about what to expect on that drive. If that is your thing, you will be well rewarded for the beauty below., if you are a novice like me on a budget, just know it’s going to cost you $$$ in the long run!
