About this property

I'm Open, Base Camp Adventure Lodge, Queen view of Anti-Cline

This is a lodge. There are four rooms. Two on the north side and two on the south. They each have their own entrance from the outside, own bathroom, microwave, and mini fridge. Common areas are kitchen, dining room, and living room but since Covid most people cook on the grills outside and each at multiple outdoor locations. Room has a queen bed. Can add a roll a way but it's tight.

It's almost unbelievable. The river and beach are about a five minute walk out your door. Kayaks at the river. Three doubles and six singles. Side by sides, take you to the Wind Caves and Chicken Corner. Three to four hours for $195. There are unlimited hikes from the property and many more near by.

There is so much wildlife it's hard to keep track of. In addition to the hundred or so birds, squirrels, and chipmunks that come to eat each day, there's the man himself, Kobae. Kobae is the 185 pound security tortoise that lives here and when he's not hanging out on the porch, or chowing down on romaine, he'll be looking for someone to go hiking with. With evening the front porch comes alive. Ringtail, skunk, fox, and raccoon all eat nightly either on or just off the front porch. You're welcome to hang out at the fire pit or sit in gravity chairs and view the night sky but many a guest has spent their evening watching all the critters that come to the porch. For kids especially it's an incredible experience.

The night sky, the incredible views, the critters, the side by sides, the beach, the river, kayaking, Wind Caves, hiking, all here. Nobody else has what Base Camp has or even comes close. Worry about other parts of your trip but don’t worry about this part. I live here pretty much 24/7/365 and I’ve been sharing it with guests for fifteen years. You want an adventure, not just staying somewhere, you’ve found it.

Now, having said all that, it’s quiet, off the grid, and you want to get away, that’s here too. Some folks just sit on the porch and unwind, enjoying the landscape, watching the rafts and kayaks come down the river or finding a spot around the property to just sit and read. There’s no shortage of those spots. I’ve spent many a morning hiking out to a different place each day and reading.

Whatever you want to do, all you have to do is walk out the door. That’s special.

See you soon,

Tom

Thanksgiving 2024
What a place! We decided to get out for thanksgiving and it was a great idea! We booked pretty last minute and Tom was great about it. I did alot of keyboard research so we thought we knew what we were getting into. The road is mentioned in many posts which gave me some concern loading everything i love into my truck and navigating this road of sheer fright. It was not bad at all. Yes there are rocks, and yes there are cliffs but slow and steady picking your path as you should do on any road was easy with fantastic views. Tom's knowledge of his place is impressive. Their friendly welcoming hospitality was second to none. Thomas and Teresa were also great If you play disc golf this place has some of the most unique tees and baskets i have ever seen. I hope to visit again. scheduled

Coolest Spot
We originally planned on staying 2 nights, but ended up staying for three because this place is so awesome. Tom loaned us the kayaks to spend a day on the river. Paddled upstream a few miles then effortlessly floated back to Base Camp. We hiked out the 6 miles round trip to “wind caves” (Catacomb Rocks) in what was one of the coolest experiences. You can also rent a side by side or drive your own car out there. Definitely worth a visit. The drive was a bit nerve wracking but definitely doable in RAV4 AWD. Watch out for Hurrah pass mostly because of others on the road. Overall experience, was very chill and laid back with phenomenal scenery & super cool people. Thank you Tom, Thomas and Theresa.

Exactly the kind of remote, off-the-grid experience we were looking for without needing to tent camp. We’re already talking about “next time”.

Bring all you need to stay for the whole trip
This place was incredible. There is so much to do and I definitely need to come back! The drive out there from town is about an hour, so come prepared. Also, the drive is pretty intense for those who don’t have 4 wheel drive and decent clearance. Make sure you’re also not deathly afraid of heights because this is a back country mountain road. One of my favorite stays to date!

A Place to heal....to re-group...to center oneself
Truly a dream stay for us outdoor, Nature loving people. Simple room, good bed, microwave . Small fridge with freezer, porches and decks everywhere......amidst thousands of Red Rock acres....all of it available just by walking out of your room. Tom, the owner/proprietor extraordinaire, could hold an audience of hundreds spellbound with his lived experiences and wry comments and is a walking book of all things in and around his Lodge. The road down to it is not for the faint of heart, but do-able in the right vehicle. Bring what you want to eat and drink and plan on staying awhile.....then let go....completely......

Awesome!
Basecamp is a gem in the heart of beautiful red mountains and right next to the Colorado river. The drive in is very rugged and exciting to say the least! Tom has just about anything you need (aside from your personal food & drink). We would definitely consider going back and staying longer next time. Oh and the adorable animals that come to eat in the evening are an added bonus!

Perfect secluded spot
The base camp is a perfect place if you want peace and quiet while exploring Moab. The road to the camp is definitely challenging but doable. Just make sure you bring enough supplies for the entirety of your stay as it does take over an hour to get down the road (leaving to town and coming back and forth often may not be ideal). It would be best to hang out and explore the less crowded side of Moab from the camp instead of in town. The owner and staff’s hospitality was fantastic and they really strive to make your stay something memorable and comfortable and do what they can to ensure you have a good time. I definitely recommend staying here if you are interested in 4x4 trails, great views and a quiet place to rest after a long day.

Very unique experience, getting there is much of it
The property is great. The owner does a nice job on maintenance and amenities. It IS off-grid, and has solar power and hot water. The area is great for hiking and getting away from it all. It's quite remarkable. Just what we were looking for. The drive to get there through Hoorah Pass requires nerve and patience and a decent truck of 4 wheel drive SUV with clearance.

Truly an adventure!
A high point of our Southwest trip! The off-grid setting along the Colorado River, backed by red rock cliffs, is so peaceful and beautiful. Tom is a warm-hearted, funny host who is available and knowledgeable. Accommodations are basic but clean. A place to hike, kayak, off-road, gaze the night sky and simply be. Be aware the road in is a bit harrowing. We'd come back again with four-wheel drive.

One of a kind
The drive in was very challenging, but we were astounded by the beauty of this area. If possible, make the trip in a Jeep or vehicle that has 4 wheel drive and plenty of clearance, however, according to Tom, people have made the drive in many types of vehicles and been fine. Be sure to drive in before dark and follow Tom's detailed directions. We had a great time exploring the area, and especially enjoyed renting a side-by-side from Tom and navigating the rougher terrain and seeing areas we couldn't reach with our vehicle. Tom and his staff were friendly and helpful with suggestions of other fun things to do there. We enjoyed seeing the wild life come around at night and the spectacular views from the camp and surrounding area. Tom is a big-hearted guy and it was good to see how much he cares for the animals on the property. The room was nicer than I expected and had everything we needed to be comfortable. We used the kitchen to cook food that we brought and it had everything we needed. Our 2 night adventure here was a special part of our trip that we won't forget.

A peaceful adventure!
Tom’s lodge was perfect for us! While the drive in was quite an adventure- we were properly forewarned. The views were breathtaking from the start. We enjoyed the peaceful, simple and relaxed atmosphere and really couldn't quite believe we were lucky enough to be there! Tom and Linda were very helpful and welcoming. We enjoyed hikes from basecamp in the morning and kayaking and swimming in the river later in the day to cool off. While the experience itself was quite rustic and simple, our accommodations were well appointed - recently updated rooms with comfortable beds and colorful decor! The pics on the website don’t do the lodge justice! We would come back for sure and will recommend to friends who would appreciate all that basecamp has to offer!

What an adventure!
If you’re into the outdoor life and enjoy exploring this is the place to go. Given everything the only thing I would have changed is to have a little higher clearance vehicle. The Ridin in the Rado was half the adventure though! Tom we’re grateful for your hospitality it was a pleasure.

Incredible experience!
We knew it was off the grid so we adjusted our expectations somewhat. What we got was what was promised as far as the accommodations were concerned. A great extra was watching Tom feed the local wildlife and his giant African tortoise! The best part, however were the breathtaking views of the canyons along the Colorado river. Hard to get to but worth the effort. We drove our Jeep bur Tom had UTVs available for rent. He gave us excellent directions on where to go. If I could make one suggestion it would be to give guests more of a heads up about the conditions of the road getting there. It is truly a rock n' roll road with many tight turns and steep drops. We were very glad we had a high clearance vehicle. Overall, it was a wonderful experience we will always remember.

Quirky and magical desert oasis
I've lived in Utah for over 5 years and been to Moab more times than I can count, but I've never had a desert experience like this. Tom's Basecamp property is by far the coolest place I've ever stayed in Moab. It's OUT there - an hour down Kane Creek road - with some sections that will make you need a road beer - but also, totally doable in my AWD '98 Honda CRV. Don't let the rough roads freak you out; if you want to get away from the insane Moab crowds and stay somewhere with amazing access, really cute animals (Kobei the tortoise is the star), and very trusting and chill hosts, drive the extra hour to stay at Basecamp. If you don't feel like spending cash on a room, they have $5 camping and hogan rentals, too. I will definitely stay here again. Thanks Tom and Linda!

The perfect adventure!
What a fantastic experience! The drive in set the tone of adventure for Base Camp, with a little off roading 4x4 tempo to get you warmed up. We were greeted by the smiles of Tom and Linda on the porch and shown our room overlooking the Colorado. It was great to enjoy the songs of the cow birds and house finches as we lounged around the property, and really appreciated Tom's commitment to biodiversity and feeding the myriad wildlife. There was a fire pit just outside our room which was a delight to ignite as the sun was setting and to exchange stories with other guests. Tom was great about asking what we hand planned for the next day and setting us up with kayaks and the side by side, or telling us about good nearby spots to hike... perfect really for anyone trying to design their own adventure. We stayed for 2 nights, and I really wish we had a bit longer to hangout and explore this area. Would definitely recommend this as a destination spot and look forward to our return to Base Camp in the future.

Just a nice guy who knows who he is and where he's suppose to be.

Why they chose this property

I was president and founder for 25 years of a large indoor soccer company. The managers worked really hard. We all did. I wanted to find a place to get away, where we could escape from the grind. I wanted something in the boonies. Driving to our Boise facility I saw people walk out of their homes, get in their canoes, and get in the Snake River. I need a river. Driving through West Texas coming back from our Houston and Austin facilities I saw folks walk out of their homes and get on their dirt bikes and on their atvs and take off down dirt trails. I need dirt trails.

Sometimes I would find a property that had some things, but not all things. Sometimes I’d find something new and the hunt would then grow more difficult with more requirements. Then, years later I hit the wall. I was done with 100 hour weeks and I needed an escape. I escalated my hunt for a property in the boonies. I started focusing on the four corners area central to most of our locations.

After looking at 50 or so properties one day my Moab real estate agent told me about a property on the other side of Hurrah Pass. I tried to get out here to view it in the BMW but in those days the road was rough and I tore the BMW all up.

Turns out Base Camp has everything and so much more. I bought this place fifteen years ago without knowing about the Wind Caves, Chicken Corner, Anti-Cline, Amasa Back, pottery sherds, arrowhead flakes, ancient dwellings, rock art, the critters of all kinds, dino tracks, fossils, all types of geology, the night sky, the quiet, the unlimited hikes and on and on. There has never been a day I haven’t appreciated what surrounds me. There never will be.

What makes this property unique

Things to know:

You should bring your own food and anything you’d like to drink besides water. Pretty much everything else is here. It’s 17 miles from Moab and it will take most a little over an hour. Take the road between the side by side rental place and McDonalds. At stop sign go straight. River on right. Black top ends. Follow signs that say Hurrah Pass. You don't normally need four wheel drive but you should have at least six inches of ground clearance. Without it your vehicle and Mother Earth may have occasional inappropriate relationships. If height is an issue you will have lots of issues up and down Hurrah Pass. We are 2.7 miles down Hurrah. Turn right at Base Camp sign and the first left will take you to the lodge.

Things are not static. They don’t stay the same all the time. The road changes, a rock falls down, there is a rain storm, anything can change the road. It may be fine in the morning and deteriorate in the afternoon, for multiple reasons. I mention the beach, but sometimes I don’t have one during snow melt and slightly after and the locations of the beach could change. In June and early July generally we have mosquitoes but hardly got any this year depending on the high water mark. We have a Milky Way most nights but in December and January it’s more difficult to see than in mid summer. I have side by sides for guests to use but sometimes they break and go in the shop at the same time so I might not have one while you are here. I feed critters at night on the front porch of the lodge. Some nights some critters don’t come or they take a long time to come. I have no control over who shows up when. Kobae usually hangs out on the porch in March, April, May, and early June. Once it gets hot he retreats in his hole and I generally only see him once a day when he comes out to eat until end of August and then he’ll want to go hiking every day, for miles. He’s not here from mid November thru late February when he goes to San Diego for the winter.
