Story Book Vintage Northwoods Lodge Loaded With Charm & Comfort

Runamuk Roost is an authentic vintage, storybook log cabin lake home. A stay with us is like being transported back in time to that wonderful place you remember from your childhood.

Our guests repeatedly tell us that staying at Runamuk Roost is like living in a story book world. You can sense this not only in our guest comments and #1 review rankings but also by the fact that we've been featured in numerous travel magazines including most recently in the Christmas 2015 Cabin Living Magazine.

Surrounded by undeveloped property on a clean, sandy bottom lake, it’s a private lakeside cabin retreat built in the style of the great lodges and charming cabins that thrived in the early 20th century. RUNAMUK'S LOCATION
Just 10 miles south of Hayward, Wisconsin, Runamuk is set in the heart of the unspoiled forests of northwest Wisconsin on semi-secluded property that offers an array of unforgettable experiences and entertainment options. It is located 15 minutes from downtown Hayward where shopping, restaurants and an abundant entertainment options await. The lake we are on, Durphee, is a clean, sandy, gently sloping, 200 acre good fishing (walleye, bass, northern, perch, crappie, sunfish, etc.) and swimming lake with a public boat access.

Runamuk is approximately 3 hours from Minneapolis, 4 hours from Madison & Green Bay, 5 hours from Milwaukee and 6 hours from Chicago. It is located on Durphee Lake, a clean, quiet and excellent 200 acre fishing lake that has its own public boat landing and is big enough for power water craft but small enough to keep traffic and noise to a minimum. We are also near many restaurants, shops, golf courses, mini-golf courses, and go-kart tracks. It’s also not far from the major area recreational trail system trail heads.

Interior Living, Relaxation & Gathering Spaces:
Runamuk Roost has a comfortable main floor living room complete with an indoor stone gas log fireplace, cable TV, Apple TV, Netflix and cozy sitting areas. The room is full of antiques, vintage decorations, and overlooks the lake.

Our original stone fireplace was converted to gas logs so it simply takes a second to get a beautiful and romantic fire going. Just sit back and relax as you visit with friends, talk, play board game or watch TV while watching the glowing flames. And just so everyone can have their “space”…on the upper floor there’s a second TV located in its own private cozy loft – perfect for kids and their video games.

Our tasteful and roomy screened porch overlooks the water and is perfect for reading, watching the kids on the beach, or conversation. The cabin and porch face west offering a stunning and panoramic sunsets as well as amazing star-gazing in the light-pollution-free northern sky.

Outside at Runamuk:
Aside from its own private secluded beach and dock, Runamuk’s grounds include a fire-ring located near the water’s edge, lawn furniture, bench swing, gas grill (we provide the propane), canoe, and life jackets, swim raft, flagstone patio with picnic table, etc. We’ll even provide the firewood so you and your group can enjoy a charming camp-fire.

Our beach and lakefront lawn are nearly level and flow right up to the home which is just 75’ from the water’s edge. There are just two steps from the main floor to the lawn. Runamuk has a sandy swimming beach, sandy bottom, and our lake has a gentle sloping bottom. At the end of our dock it’s about 4’ deep. Durphee Lake is excellent for pan fishing right off the dock or out in your fishing boat. It’s big enough for power boats and jet skis (personal watercraft) but quiet and low-traffic enough to enjoy the great outdoors. Be sure and ask about our pontoon or fishing boat rental to augment your stay.

Housekeeping, Linens, Towels, etc.: Along with the fully-equipped kitchen we will provide dish washing & dishwasher soap, trash bags, outside large – capacity trash can, paper towels, kitchen towels, bath and beach towels, etc., as well as all linens. To ensure consistent standards Runamuk has a mandatory cleaning service requirements. Guests are still required to clean the grill, empty trash cans, and replenish firewood in the woodhouse from the bulk wood behind the garage. The dishwasher should be started before guests leave.

Beds should remain unmade as our staff will strip the beds and put clean sheets on. We ask our guests to put dirty linens in the provided hampers and to remove dirty sheets, pillowcases, etc. but leave them on the beds. Furniture, toys, game, books, etc., should be returned to their proper place.

Family Vacation

We enjoyed our time at the lake at this beautiful location. The house was well stocked, which made it easy to settle in. It was easy to communicate with the owners, and they graciously accommodated a last minute pontoon rental request. The house was lovely and the property felt private so was a great place to relax and create new family memories. We would love to go back.

Baker Clan

Our week-long stay at Runamuk Roost was great. The description of the cabin and amenities was spot on. I always bring my own knives and a few specialty pans, like a big stock pot and a stove-top griddle. But the kitchen was well stocked. We were 8 people: 2 grandparents, their sons and their spouses, a 21-month old toddler, a 10-month old baby, and a dog. It is a very nice, very beautiful and peaceful setting. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The property has a beautiful western view across a 198 acre lake. We watched sunsets from the end of the dock or gathered around the fire pit above the beach. The lake has a breeding loon pair. They had 2 loonlets. Don't miss the chicken-fried steak at the Hayward Family Restaurant or the pastries at Firehouse Bakery and Deli in Hayward. It was a wonderful family week in a wonderful setting.

Best Vacation Rental

We had a wonderful week with great fishing, beautiful clear water, and an abundance of nature. The log cabin lake home was so clean and spacious. After renting other properties for our yearly family gathering each summer for the last 25 years, this was by far the nicest home we have ever enjoyed! We will definitely be returning next year. Thank you, Joan, for all your hospitality!

Amazing and Peaceful

Property is gorgeous. The kitchen has a large center island for preparing food and hanging out. The house has woods on both sides and is on a dead end street. Very little boat traffic and the sandy shallow beach area was perfect for our 3 year old granddaughter. We saw 7 loons and a variety of ducks. Loved the fact that it felt secluded yet was close to downtown Hayward, grocery store, and restaurants. We would definitely rebook and recommend this property.

Great Fall Getaway Cabin

Perfect property for a few friends to spend an extended fall getaway. Close to Hayward, quiet location right on the lake. The cabin had perfect sized rooms for us to gather, play games, cook etc. Loved the gas fireplace and living room area! About the host

Hosted by Joan Taylor

Host profile image
I love the Hayward, Wisconsin area and I adore our unbelievably charming cabin, Runamuk Roost. Runamuk helps me recall the fond memories of my childhood cabin. Warm summer days of swimming, fishing and swimming with grandpa and grandma, mom and dad, cousins, siblings, friends, etc. Campfire sing alongs, roasting marshmallows, and talking with family and friends around the fire. You know: the good old days.

Now that I am grown up I wanted to always keep that memory alive. That's I bought Runamuk. It's the perfect design, on the perfect lot, in the perfect location, on the perfect lake.

Half vintage log cabin lodge and half-bungalow, our home, Runamuk Roost, was built in the early 1960s as a small hunting cabin. Because the original structure was so full of charm, as we added on and renovated, we built around Runamuk rather than simply tear it down and start over. Throughout we tried to maintain the underlying design and character of the property by matching things like stain, varnish, woodwork design, etc. We also tried to stay true to the vintage feel of the original Runamuk by using locally harvested wood and quarried stone, all hand-crafted by local tradesmen.

Inside Runamuk there are many special items. Some have been in our family for a long time while others have been acquired not so long ago but are themselves antiques or special. They include things such as a real “moose leg” lamp made from a moose my father-in-law shot. The animal pelts scattered around are from the local Hayward, Wisconsin area and the fish mounts are from those we pulled right out of the lake less than 200 yards from the dock.

Why they chose this property

Staying at Runamuk is like living in a story book world. Surrounded by undeveloped property on a clean, sandy bottom lake, it’s a private lakeside cabin retreat built in the style of the great lodges and charming cabins that thrived in the early 20th century. It's historic and nostalgic setting is truly like stepping back 100 years in time. Yet with all its charm and vintage character Runamuk still retains that comfortable, cozy cabin feel.

Runamuk is equipped with resplendent luxuries and modern comforts such as climate control, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, cable TV, and full gourmet kitchen, etc. With its own private sandy beach just 75’ feet away, a level and unencumbered front lawn that flows right up to the lake, and location on a good fishing and swimming lake, Runamuk is perfect for multi-generational and multiple families including those with children and folks with limited mobility.

Runamuk and the surrounding northwest Wisconsin region are incredibly beautiful, awe-inspiring and are loaded with unique and fun activities and adventures. You can swim, dive, fish, bike, canoe, boat, eat in or out, golf, mini-golf, go-kart, shop, shoot shotguns, rifles and pistols, snowmobile, ATV, plus see wildlife such as bear, deer, beavers, eagles, elk, fishers, bobcats, etc.

The lake Runamuk is on, Durphee Lake, is, the perfect size lake. It's big enough to water ski, tube, jet-ski, boat, etc. but is uncrowded quiet, clean, sandy and loaded with fish. The neighborhood too is quiet and good for walking, biking, etc. The property is level and has an unobstructed view of the lake. The yard is equipped with a charming lakeside fire-pit, outdoor dining.

What makes this property unique

Runamuk is the most charming, well decorated, and comfortable homes around. It’s located on the best fishing, swimming, boating lake around. It's clean, sandy, and gently sloping. The fishing is great right off the dock. Our lot is near level and you have a nice, level lot that's 75' from the beach to the home.

The home sits on a quiet, dead-end road in a beautiful neighborhood that's perfect for walking, biking, etc. It’s just 6 hours from Chicago and 3 from Minneapolis. The lot is large, wooded, secluded and set back from the road. In many ways it’s just like having your very own resort with a private beach & dock (pier) on a nice sandy swimming and fishing lake.

Runamuk has a huge kitchen, nice-sized and comfortable bedrooms and an awesome living/great room with a beautiful fireplace. The rates include lots of extras like firewood, propane for the gas grill, a wonderful fire-ring, lawn furniture, outdoor dining facilities, linens, towels, cleaning supplies, and has fully stocked kitchen, etc.

Runamuk can sleep 10+, is highly affordable and chock full of incredible charm. It is spacious, comfortable and entertaining for people of all ages.

There’s lots of wildlife around as well as exhilarating and fun activities for guests of all ages. Many activities can only be found or experienced in this part of the world where we have four distinct seasons, lots of space, huge forests, glacial lakes and rivers, and an extensive motorized and non-motorized trail system.
