About this property

Black Hills Forest Edge Cabin

Our getaway cabin in the Central Black Hills is perfect for those who are looking for a quiet base for their Black Hills vacation. Very accessible location, the roads to the cabin are all paved, except the last one-tenth of a mile, which is nicely-graded gravel.

Panoramic views of the hills and forest from all rooms of the cabin. Main floor has one bedroom (1 full bed), one bathroom, living/dining area, a full kitchen, and covered deck. Large loft has sleeping area (1 queen bed and 1 full bed) and TV/DVD. Unfinished basement has a ping-pong table. Elderly and wheelchair friendly, with zero steps to get from your vehicle to the main floor. Our cabin is a place for the family to unplug, with limited cell service and no internet.

Start your day with a lovely breakfast on the large deck, with just the murmuring sounds of the nearby ponderosa trees. Spend an adventure-filled day in the Black Hills or simply laze around the cabin and meander through the backyard forest.

The major attractions of the Black Hills - Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake - are just 30 minutes away. Jewel Cave is one hour away. For shopping and dining, Hill City is 15 minutes away. The village of Rochford and the ghost town of Mystic are 30 minutes away. Fishing, boating, and hiking at Deerfield Lake are just four miles away. For those who love to take in the gorgeous Black Hills, while burning calories, we have mountain bikes available free for your use. From the cabin, pedal three miles on a rough country road and you'll reach the Mickelson Trail, the best rails-to-trails in the West.

Come and enjoy the Black Hills from our forest's edge cabin!

Nice Country Setting

Really enjoyed the setting at this place. It’s a quiet setting away from the business of Keystone and Hill City which our family really liked. Was nice to come back from seeing the sights and being in town to a quiet accommodation. Loved watching the deer and turkeys and being close to many trail heads and nature walks.

Decadently Quiet

Clean and bright, Forest Edge provided the peace and quiet desired. A fully equipped kitchen allowed us to stay in and cook/grill after a long day of outdoor activities. Enjoyed the trip to Black Hills immensely!

Quiet Relaxing Home

The house is outside of Hill City, semi secluded with the black hills as your back yard. Its quiet and off grid with little to no cell service. No well so its a holding tank for water, but that wasnt a big deal for us as we camp and are used to that. The loft is a great spot for the kiddos to hang out and watch tv after a day of adventuring. We played games everyday, laughing a lot. Master bed is smaller than we prefer, but we made due. Also the bedroom gets bright early in June/July but we just put an extra cover over the windows. Ping pong table was great, grill worked fine. Loved this location. Super sweet host, lovely home, perfect for what we needed.

Forest Edge Cabin

Very clean and comfortable cabin! We had no cell service the entire stay, which we were aware would be a possibility. Normally, I wouldn’t be too concerned about that, however we did have some storms roll through during our stay. Ruby was quick to communicate that there were forecasted storms and made sure we knew there was a weather radio available in the cabin. The double beds were a little too small for my wife and I, so we shared the upstairs loft with our 5 and 7 year kiddos (which they loved). Overall, great place and we enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle! Highly recommend to anyone looking to disconnect a bit!

National Parks/Black Hills Family vacation

Great location for a cabin in the Black Hills. Thoroughly enjoyed our cabin. Very glad we did not pick something closer to town. It is a very peaceful spot. Loved having the deck with the grill and patio seating. Everything as pictured. Shower pressure was great. Kitchen was stocked with coffee, tea, sugar, salt, pepper and some seasonings. Yeah! Plenty of towels for the bathroom. Beds were firm but not hard. If you are a light sleeper bring a sleep mask. The cabin fills with bright light as soon as the sun comes up. The curtains provide privacy but that's it. Hill City was the best location for us for all our National Park tours. Crazy Horse and Custer state park were an easy drive. Custer State Park was our favorite. Even made it to Devils Tower in about 2 hours. Would stay here again.

A comfortable clean home.

Black Hills Forest Edge Cabin has the perfect amount of comfort for a stay in the Black Hills. It's located close to all of the major attractions but far enough outside of town that on a clear night the Milky Way brilliantly arches overhead. We saw deer, wild turkey, a fox, and a host of song birds around the cabin. Sitting on the back porch watching the sun come up over the hills with a cup of coffee was a great way to start each day. The cabin is a great place to unplug and slow your motor down. It is also a great base to start day trips from. Devils Tower is 2-1/2 hours away. The Badlands were 2 hours away. Custer State Park was 25 minutes away. Mt Rushmore was only 25 minutes away. Hill City, which is only about 12 minutes away, has a good grocery store, several restaurants, a nice main street to walk down in the evening, and everyone is real nice. Ruby was a gracious host and my family and I are glad she opened her home to us!

Great location

The property was located about 10 miles out of Hill city on a very scenic paved road. It was quiet and secluded and we spent every evening on the back deck overlooking the hills. Kitchen very well stocked and we ate many meals there. Easy check in. Great place!

Quite and relaxing place!

Place was lovely, quiet clean and had everything we needed, but the gravel road next to the house was very dusty and when vehicles went by they created large clouds of dust which made it hard to be outside on the deck, also dust came in to the house. We weren’t able to get any internet reception even though we had two different carriers.

Great Cabin in a great nature

We book the cabin for eight days and arrived with great expectation. All our expectations were fully met. You look for an Cabin a little bit out of all the tourist area this is where you should go for. A cozy cabin in a great nature. Our three boys love it. Every morning we saw the animals from the cabin balcony and the kids had so much fun. Everything was clean and well prepared. Thank you Ruby! We had a great stay in the Black Hills Forest Edge Cabin and when you plan a trip to the Black hills we would recommend the cabin especially also with kids.

Great place in the country.

This place is perfect for someone who wants to stay out of town in the peace and quiet. Well maintained and furnished, clean, decent beds and plenty of sheets/towels. Kitchen has lots of extras. Idyllic. Great sunsets! Centrally located to all of the black hills. Use of the mountain bikes was a plus! A few very minor things: The lighting could have been better positioned in some rooms. The place has lots of windows so if it's sunny (not the case for us!) then it wouldn't have been an issue. Also, you need to be "mindful" of water use in the kitchen and toilet since a septic is apparently not allowed. We tried to be water frugal but it's hard to tell. Also, window blinds are really thin. So, if you like it dark when you sleep then this could be an issue - especially in summer when it starts getting light at 4:30!

Peaceful and Beautiful

We loved our stay in this cabin. It is very clean and has everything you need to make it feel like your "home away from home". It was such a quiet and peaceful location and deer would come into the valley every night to watch off the deck.

Beautiful home in a quiet relaxing area.

Forest Edge Cabin was a well maintained home with all the amenities you need. We had no cell service at the cabin but that only bothered our teenagers! We enjoyed exporing the forest area and the area around deer lake. The house was a little further out of townn which wasn't a big deal except that we spent a lot of time driving to our locations & it just added to time in the car. It was a great trip to the Black Hills and this home only added to our experience!

Very nice cabin near Hill City

The cabin sits at the edge of the forest about 12-15 minutes out of Hill City. Hill City is a nice town with some shops, restaurants and grocery store. Pretty much anything you need for the stay can be purchased there. We went to the Badlands, Mount Rushmore (go around 7 or 8 PM to tour and then see the show at 9), Custer State Park (the clear favorite), Devils Tower, Bear Country (the kids loved it), horse back riding (recommended!), Wind Cave, ATV riding (meh) and Spearfish canyon (swimming in the creek is a blast on hot days). If I could do it again (and it wasn't 95+ degrees everyday), I would spend 2-3 days in Custer State Park. Very highly recommended. Expect to drive a lot if you plan to see everything. Better yet, don't plan to see everything :) The cabin is located on a dirt road about a 1/8 mile from paved roads that take you into town. The cabin was very clean and had everything that we needed to enjoy our stay including a grill, coffee maker and fun games! Kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals. There is a deck which wraps around the south and east side of the cabin. We sat out on the deck in the morning and enjoyed our coffee watching the sunrise and at night playing board games (no mosquitoes!). We also saw a few deer wander through behind the cabin which was lots of fun for the kids. The main floor is nice with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen/eating area and living room. The bedroom itself is nice but the bed (a full, I think) was a bit small for the grown ups. The loft has 3 beds (2 fulls and a single) and the 5 of us ended up sleeping there due to the slightly larger beds. The cabin doesn't have air conditioning, but the nights cooled off enough to make it comfortable for sleeping with the 2 ceiling fans and box fan moving air. It was 95+ degrees everyday we were there, but we were out and about all day, so I can't comment on how it would have been in the cabin during the day. The owners were very nice and made sure we were comfortable. Everything was communicated clearly and we had no problems with anything during the stay. Overall, a great experience.

So memorable!

Our family so enjoyed the Forest Edge Cabin. We absolutely loved the location away from the more touristy campgrounds and hotels - but perfect distance to all the sight-seeing the Black Hills offers. Easy access on main roads, but a couple blocks from heavy traffic! We had calm evenings enjoying the weather and nature - including the deer and elk in the yard. Our four kids enjoyed the loft space, the deck for eating breakfast with the birds and the forest for exploring. A hand-made travel notebook provided us with extra information and even maps to area activities! We had everything we needed to enjoy some time away. We would certainly stay again with our kids or without!
