About this property

Best deal in Chilmark/May 15-Nov. 15

"Chilmark is quiet, laid back and much less congested than down-island counterparts. If you want to spread out and relax, this is an excellent part of the Island to visit. Alley's General Store and the Chilmark Tavern are nearby if you need provisions or a nice dinner. The rental itself is set back, very private, and has a massive grass yard for kids to play in. A great stay!"

Great Location
Unfortunately, Hurricane Lee shortened our stay at this location. The grounds are beautiful, the beach is breathtaking and we love Chilmark. The house itself needs some attention. We were disappointed as the pictures looked as if everything was in good shape. The outside deck is where we spent most of our time, at least when it wasn't raining.

Up-island Charmer
We've been traveling to the vineyard for years. We decided to rent thus property up island and it fulfilled all of our desires. Sunrise every morning was spectacular to compliment our coffeee on the spacious deck. We explored up island places to eat including the Home Port, Chilmark Tavern and the Outermost Inn. All of them were wonderful. The beach was awesome..... Peaceful, private and spectacular. This is definitely a repeat property for us

Peace and Seclusion in Chilmark
There were 4 of us with friends visiting for a couple of nights and it was lovely. Great large deck and outdoor shower. We caught the beginning of a heat wave the last few days but there were many fans to keep us cool. The Key Beach was definitely a plus as it was close to the house and not crowded at all! Very similar to the public South Beach to the East but softer sand and beautiful ponds to explore. Comfortable beds, plenty of towels. The owner was very helpful and quick with responses to our questions. Grey Barn Farm, Alleys General Store, the 7a Cafe, Yoga Barn and Menemsha sunsets-Thank you Murphys!

Book ferry in Jan. 1/3 mile walk to road, not lighted at night. Deer along the way. Bus will stop to pick you up if you flag it down and will drop you off at end of street. Limited supplies at general stores in area

Perfect family beach escape
My family and I absolutely loved our stay in this beautiful home in quiet Chilmark. The bucolic grounds were lush, green, and peaceful with cute natural neighbors (rabbits, which delighted my young children). We rode our bikes to the beach which was a highlight of our stay. The wrap-around deck with lounge chairs on one side and a large table with patio chairs and an umbrella on the other. There was also a grill that we didn't end up using but was great to have as an option. The open kitchen had plenty of utensils and a dishwasher. The dining room table was large with drawers that held lobster forks. I cannot stop raving about this amazing home, location and wonderful host. Thank you for an amazing 3 weeks!

Chilmark Home 8/27
We loved this stay so much. The pictures do not do it any justice. The property itself is stunning. Huge lawn and beautiful tree to hang out on. We spent every afternoon playing ladder ball after the beach. Then we would either cook or drive to Menemsha for dinner. The fact that there is a fantastic market and wine market just 15 minutes down the road make it SO much easier than it used to be. Especially if you are used to staying far up island. The keyed beaches are so lovely. I can’t believe that there were so few of us on it, especially considering that there was a giant music festival while we were there. Communication with Carolyn was swift and kind and helpful. We are already planning on coming back.

Disappointed with the whole experience
I have to admit this was a good deal for the Vineyard, but overall it wasn't a good experience. When we showed up everything was off or unplugged including the refrigerator. The basement was extremely musty, so we turned the dehumidifier on, which made it very hot. Then, we tried the brand new AC system and it wouldn't cool. I let the host know and she gave me instructions. It still wasn't working so she said she would contact a HVAC company, but I never heard back. It was very hot while there, and very uncomfortable. The house itself is very private and a good size, but it definitely needs more TLC. There were updates made over the years, but it needs more love. Pros: Private location, good size home. Access to private beach. Cons: AC not working. Needs TLC. There were ants everywhere (which has been a universal problem this year due to rain).

Another great week on Wososket Lane. Smooth check in, perfect location to Menemsha, and access to beautiful cycling routes. No words to describe beach days and moon rises on Quansoo beach. Carolyn is an excellent host.

Chilmark gem
Carolyn was a warm and helpful communicator well before our trip, answering questions about beach passes and what we should bring/what was provided. Our family has been coming to Chilmark for years (my husband and I were married there!) and Carolyn's family home gave off vibes of many years of happy memory-making. The private setting on 5 acres is a true getaway, with a large yard and wraparound deck and grill. As promised, we were able to hear the roar of the Atlantic as we stargazed on clear nights and enjoyed the fireflies and shooting stars. We even saw the International Space Station buzz by. The house was more than enough room for the four of us, with an extra bedroom. Outdoor showers surrounded by trees and bluebird skies were another treat. So many thoughtful details, from providing linens and paper goods to olive oil and herbs and spices and coffee...beach towels and all the kitchen supplies you'd need. We had a relaxing week checking out the private beach at Quansoo (the property provides a key) and several trips to Lucy Vincent. We also hiked at Menemsha Hills, did several paddle boarding trips (West Tisbury and Edgartown), and more nature walks, as well as a trip to Chappy. Family movie nights were easy with a large, modern TV we were able to hook up to our Roku/Chromecast. One highlight was a celebratory dinner at the Outermost Inn, with the most gorgeous red sunset. We also frequented Chilmark General Store for their yummy muffins, cold brew, and sandwiches/salads. From start to finish, Carolyn was responsive, helpful and gracious, making us feel right at home. We're eager to return! Thank you for having us!

Serene and beautiful
This is one of the best properties that we have stayed at on the Vineyard. It is in a perfect location between our favorite Chilmark beaches and the restaurants that we love in Edgartown. The yard alone is phenomenal with old growth trees. The rental has many amenities that we appreciated like a makeup mirror, nice kitchenware, a coffeemaker, spices, etc. The wraparound porch really adds to the space. The private beach is a special aspect as well. It was also very clean. We just love this house.

Just what we needed
Charming, private home with amazing access to Quansoo Beach. Weather was amazing, and we spent two days on the beach, virtually all to ourselves. Kitchen very well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, utensils. Made it a breeze to make dinner in most evenings. Grill on the deck was put to good use. Very fortunate to have found this private retreat at the end of a quiet lane.

Amazing location !
This house was great for 2 families. Plenty of indoor and outdoor space with a large deck. The convenient access to Hancock and Quansoo beach by bike or foot made our trip. The excellent communication and flexibility of Carolyn made planning a trip during a pandemic seamless.

Summer Stay
This very secluded house, was exactly what we wanted. It comfortably accommodated our family of five. The three kids each had their own bedroom downstairs and shared a bathroom. The upstairs bedroom is comfy and has its own bathroom. The outdoor shower got used daily, after returning from the beach. Great out door deck, that we started our days on with coffee and breakfast. Then finished our day on eating dinner. The kitchen, though tight, is adequate and equipped to cook in. We mostly utilized the Weber grill out on the deck. There’s plenty of yard for the kids also, to play games. The private beach, you have to drive to get to. But so worth it. Would stay here again

Peaceful--and with a private beach
Three adults and two children were very comfortable in this pleasant, spacious house, with its wonderful deck and outdoor dining table. And access to a private beach meant we could go whenever we wanted and avoid the crowds. Making our plans was easy, as the owner answered all our questions very promptly. The other reviewers mention some of the great things to do in Chilmark. All true. One of my favorite was sitting on the deck of this quiet house in the early morning and revelling in the peacefulness.

Spectacular Long Weekend
A bunch of friends and I stayed at this secluded little gem in Chilmark for a long weekend. It was divine. The pictures do not do credit to its coziness and comfort. The wrap around porch was a delightful spot for dinner. The huge lawn was ideal for the many lawn games. And the beach. Did I mention the beach? We got passed the locked gate and there wasn't a soul in sight. We had the entirety of Hancock Beach to ourselves. I definitely hope to make a second trip out of it.

Great stay over Labor Day weekend
A group of eight of us adults stayed here over Labor Day weekend and had an excellent experience. When we arrived the house was clean and well stocked with towels, dishes etc. It's fairly basic, don't expect a lot of frills, but definitely did the job for a big group. The setting was secluded, quiet and pretty and we enjoyed eating breakfast on the outdoor deck and using the grill and outdoor shower. The best part? A key to a beautiful private beach (albeit with big waves) with hardly anyone else around. The best beaches are otherwise impossible and/or expensive to access on MV, so this is a major asset. My only suggestion would be to add the option of a few portable fans -- it was very humid when we were there and a bit sticky at night. Note that it's not near any of the major towns and you definitely need a car if you're staying there, but I prefer that more rural part of the island anyway (don't miss the nearby Farmers' Market on Saturdays). The owner was helpful and easy to communicate with beforehand. Thanks for a great stay, we hope to return!

The Chilmark House has been in my husband's family since 1974. Owned by four children of a Vineyard native, the house has always been a family retreat. My mother-in-law always greeted us with heaping plates of fresh pasta after getting in on late ferries in the 1980s, and fresh swordfish from Menemsha was often sizzling on the grill. Just a mile from the beach, the house is a great place to unwind after a day of body-surfing or beach combing.
This year marks our 11th year of renting out the house through VRBO. Over the years, we have made significant upgrades to enhance your stay. Last year, we painted the exterior of the house. We freshened up some living room furniture and added mini split air conditioners throughout the house. This summer, the entire wrap around deck was replaced. The house features mini splits in every room, allowing guests to tailor their room temperature to individual preferences. Over the years, the Vineyard has become increasingly hot and humid, so we believe the mini splits are a necessary game changer. At the same time, we have tried to keep our rates reasonable, making our home one of the best bargains on the Vineyard.

Why they chose this property

Experience the secluded paradise and serenity of Martha’s Vineyard this summer at our immaculate Chilmark house, which features a key of a private Chilmark beach. The 1,300-square-foot split-level house has been in the family for 40 years, but is relatively new to the rental market. It sits on 5 acres down a private dirt road off South Road about 1 mile from Alley’s General Store and the beach. The house features high ceilings, a master bedroom with an adjoining bathroom upstairs and three bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs. It also features a Queen sleeper sofa in the sun-drenched living room. The home has new floors, appliances, furniture and linens. The wrap-around deck is the perfect spot for cocktails or early morning reading. Most of the time, you can hear the surf crashing in the distance. The house also features an outdoor shower.

What makes this property unique

A quiet secluded spot to unwind and recharge within walking distance of the Vineyard's most beautiful beaches.
