Moldy, Damp, Smelly

Second bathroom was in a very musty, moldy, dark, dirty basement. It flooded the first night and we were unable to use it. Host made excuses about getting it repaired and never told us that it was repaired. When she contacted me after I left, she just made excuses that it would be better for next guest. I was very unhappy with my stay as were my friends.

Prairie du Chen

The bathroom was not cleaned at all (I have photos) there was a shelf in one of the bedrooms where all sorts of camera could have been! There was ONE A/C unit in ONE bedroom. The living room was warm. When we left & returned there was a truck in the drive, there was no one in the house (thankfully) the owner said it was the yard caretaker - we looked all around & NEVER saw anyone?? The truck stayed there for about 2 hours after we returned. There was a HUGE cobweb right by the front door. There were instructions to NEVER enter the basement-unless we must use these bathroom or the washer & dryer. I would like to talk with someone from VRBO - I am not sure this is a house you want on your listings? I have photos to share.

Family Reunion

Allen the owner communicated with me via phone text and voice (which was much easier than the cumbersome VRBO online communication), and guided me through getting in to the house and some of the specifics like the attic fan etc. This house was awesome for us to gather at before my family reunion. Several cousins along with their children and grandchildren were able to come over for a cookout in the back yard. We also were able to heat up dishes for our family reunion. And due to the flooding our family reunion was relocated to the park 1 block away from the house making this an ideal location. Allen knew a number of my family members and even told me stories about them I had not heard, making the Homestead the perfect place to stay for a reunion. I really enjoyed talking to Allen and consider him a great host and a friend. I hope I get to stay here again.

the place could use some maintenance..

The bathroom sink didn't drain well at all. the rugs in house you easily slipped on. the bathroom had an awful urine smell. had to wash all pots, bowls, and utensils before use. curtains very dirty and spider webs every where. front screen door to side of street would not latch. had to brace with block during the wind storm

On first glance it is nice

On arriving at this property it appears to be quite nice for an older property. There are a few issues though. Hopefully the owner will work them out soon so other people don’t have to experience them. We had quite a few plumbing issues while we were there. The air conditioner also leaked water in the floor. The owner was very nice on the phone, but when it wasn’t sure he was going to be able to get the plumbing fixed and it was a weekend, we decided to move onto another place. We had been there one night without plumbing and we left a night early. We were only refunded one night and not even a full night at that. So while there are some very positive attributes… Beautiful little town, the house could be really cute,(perhaps a really deep cleaning and decluttering of personal hygiene items, etc would help), unless he gets some of the physical issues worked out then he probably doesn’t need to be renting it. FYI the description lists the basement with a handicapped accessible bathroom, but it clearly says when you get there that the basement is off-limits. So having one party that uses a walker and depending on being able to have that part of the facility was also not a plus for us.

Worked out well for our quick stay

Overall things were fine. I just want to mention a couple things I would suggest. No crazy about having to pay extra for insurance of your personal items. Might want to get all the lights working as they should be. Larger TV's are cheap and set up a simple way to view. Very clumsy. I didn't come there to watch tv but it would be nice to at least check the news and weather? Parking was great!!

Boating weekend

The house was very clean and plenty of room for my group. The house has a nice big back yard and is close to the river and shopping. I works definitely stay there again. The owner reached out to me to make sure we knew the sleeping situations and how to get the best experience out of the house. Good stay!

Quaint Home Away From Home

The check-in was super easy, the house was everything we needed. We spent a week staying in the home. It had more than everything we needed. The house is very charming, definitely reminds you of your Grandparents home. Brought smiles of nostalgia. The location is perfect. Close to downtown, river and restaurants, yet far enough away to be peaceful. Even the trains weren’t noisy. Thank you Allen for your hospitality. We enjoyed our stay immensely.

Great family vacation, including s'mores around the fire ring!

This was great for my family. We had 7 of us here, ages 8-47. Two campfire dinners, cooked over the fire ring in the yard, with hot dogs (one flavor for each night) on sticks and s'mores. We bought fire wood from the bar 2 blocks away. My 8 year old loved the train conductors tooting at him! Two short, quiet blocks away were tracks, but we couldn't really hear the trains inside. Play ground a block away. This is 20-ish minutes from Wyalusing State Park. We did canoeing and watched the spectacular sunset there, after a short exhilarating hike to a cave! The 3 bedrooms were as described so we had 2 boys sleep in the living room, one on each couch. The pro for us - the fire ring, the quiet community, 2 full bathrooms, the price, the oppurtinty for a good family vacation.

Met Our Needs

The house is old (like grandma's house) but it had everything we needed for our stay and was fairly clean. The beds were comfortable and the air conditioning worked great! There were five of us staying, and the price for our group was unbeatable. The extra large driveway was a bonus! Will definitely consider staying again!

My Father built this house in 1960. I grew up in Prairie du Chien. After my parents passing I inherited the property. My Uncle lived with my parents until health reasons caused his move to special facilities. After high school graduation I went from Wisonsin to Virginia and got a BFA degree in Interior Design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1974 From there to Connecticut for 5 years and then to my present home in Ft Worth Texas. Been in Texas since 1979 . With intermittent visits to my home in Wisconsin

Why they chose this property

My father built the house His family came from Europe to this area in 1863. So 4 Generations have lived in this area. This regional area is a River resort Agricultural community, with relevant local history in the development of Wisconsin and American History.
Prairie du Chien is the second oldest city in Wisconsin, Green bay being first, and Prairie du Chien second 1863. It was the Fur trading center for the Indians and Trappers to trade. The Aster Fur trading Co was located here. The water ways were the means of transportation from the Mississippi to the Wisconsin to the Lakes to Canada . Lewis and Clark explored this area. Zachery Taylor was stationed here before becoming President. During the Civil War This city was a hospital center for wounded to recover. There is a Military Cemetery in the City. Artesian Water Wells produced a destination place for people to come and partake.
One of Wisconsin's first wealthy families 'Herculius Douhsman 'resided at the '' Villa Louie'' a restored and functioning historic residence open to the public with in the city. It is also the location of the First Ft. Crawford. One corner building has been restored and the grounds are plotted where the buildings were located on the property. The war of 1812 was also fought in the city as well. This historic battle is re enacted on a yearly basis as well as an Indian and Fur trading settlement working as it was during the early years. The Second Ft Crawford was built in another area of the city also near the Mississippi River. Dr Beaumont a medical Dr. has a Museum showing his works and contributions to the medical profession.
Along with these specific historic amenities, The River its Water activities and rentals, and historic sites there are also on the Wisconsin side of the River Wyalusing State Park with its paths and adventures and activities, there are also two Parks on the Iowa side of the River. Pikes Peak Park and Effigy Mounds and the 'Lady Luck Casino'

What makes this property unique

My dad built it. It has hard wood floors, a washer and dryer and a freezer, Mature tree's and shade. and Parking for 6 to 8 Vehicles in the drive way.
It is a great place for family and friends to gather. It a block away from a park with additional amenities and 5 blocks away from the Mississippi River boat dock Landing. Also a trailer park for additional campers and friends, just down the road..
