Make sure to ask before you book

This Victorian appears to be a really neat place to stay, but you need to ask some details before you stay. Light fixtures seem to be an attempt to share authentic fixtures, but only one bulb lit in the two fixtures on the main level. The dining room fixture was not connected to the switch on the wall, but we learned that there must have been a button near the kitchen that was the control. The plumbing was challenging. When we used the toilet on the main level, it did not flush and we had to pour water in the tank with every use. It is nice that they have one bathroom attached to each bedroom upstairs, but it was a bit ridiculous in one room to find the shower in what used to be a closet, & then to find a toilet in that same space. We had to move the toilet paper when using the shower & clean up the toilet after every shower. In all situations, the water took several minutes to warm up. This home is not easy for people who have difficulty with stairs. I don't recall seeing anything that mentioned the bedrooms were only accessible by using the staircase, which was difficult for one of our guests to navigate. The steps from the front porch were also a challenge for everyone, as they are falling apart. Found lots of bugs and months of dust under the bed when plugging in a device. Did not bring these to the owners attention because I was only able to be there one night. She was prompt to reply, but made it seem that all of this was acceptable.

Great Location, Fun House

My family and I had a great stay at McGregor Manor. It was in the perfect location, close to Pikes Peak and Effigy Mounds. My boys also loved that there was a city park a block away with swings and slides. Downtown was just a few blocks away, though the weather kept us from walking around town much. We ended up crossing into WI, which was only a few minutes away. The house was very unique and reminded my of my great-grandmother's house when I was growing up. Lots of space, place for the kids to run around and play. They LOVED the "closet bathroom"! Katie was gracious and accommodating, quick to respond to our questions.

a little pricey, but a very nice property.

All of the living spaces were large enough to accommodate our group. The beds were -very- comfortable. The size and updates to the kitchen made food preparation easier. We liked that we could open some windows for fresh air. The firepit in the back yard was wonderful also.

Wonderfully charming and spacious

We enjoyed this getaway for our family with diverse needs...elderly parents, adult child with autism and 2 tween girls. The home was exactly as promised in the description. The historical building is beautifully decorated and appointed,, with every kitchen or household supply one might need for a longer stay...Tupperware, foli and saran, essential paper products, shower essentials, even bug spray, etc, etc. The AC is only in the bedrooms and in the kitchen, which was only noticeable as a problem on the muggiest day of our trip. We loved the outdoor fire pit and grill, as well as the front porch swing and seating. For those if you with older visitors, there are 2 stairwells, which was handy, as the beautiful front stairs are lovely, but difficult for those with older knees, etc.. The 2nd stairs have excellent handrails and made the up and down manageable for my older parents. The space in the home is more than adequate to provide both together time, as well as pockets for folks to gather in smaller groups. We loved playing games they had in the home and that we brought with us and exploring the many things McGregor has to offer. Katie and Brent were very responsive in addressing our questions, including our challenges with technology. :) We would stay here again! Thank you!

They don’t build them like this anymore!

We recently spend 10 nights in this lovely historic home. Wonderful original features including woodwork, floors, gorgeous staircase, a 2nd rear staircase, high decorative tin ceilings, & a traditional wide front porch. The photos online are representative of the home. Pros: -There are many, starting with the excellent response by Katie, the gracious host, to any issue, large or small. The house is very clean. We are frequent VRBO/HOMEAWAY users. The most important factors for us: BEDS which are very comfortable in every bedroom. All bedrooms are upstairs. INTERNET- Very good. Husband had Zoom meeting and it worked well. No cable TV, streaming only option - works fine. (1 TV in the house.) KITCHEN has been updated, is modern and quite functional w/ quality pots & pans, plenty of dishes & silverware. Gas stove, dishwasher, large side by side fridge with ice maker, & a coffee drip brewer. There is an in-kitchen dining nook & a separate dining room beyond the kitchen. BATHROOMS - each bedroom has its own bathroom. Pretty neat as they were originally the closets. One of the King bedrooms has a quirky toilet/shower combo that is unusual in design but is functional. Plenty of hot water. There is 1 bathtub/shower combo near the twin room. Plus a 1/2 bath on the main level. LOCATION: Nice quiet neighborhood & neighbors. Walkable to the main business/shopping district and the river. Backyard garden with firepit & gas grill. We used it often. CONS: Very few. Washer & Dryer is the the basement. It’s a little spooky down there, but works fine. No central air - window A/C’s instead. Main drawback is its a bit loud for sleeping. We would stay again.

Short weekend away in Driftless Iowa

We wanted to see the Driftless area of Iowa and Wisconsin, and McGregor seemed like a great place to stay. Our young kids were enchanted by the old house and its mysteries. We've stayed in many rental homes and this had just about the best stocked kitchen in terms of equipment and spices, etc. It's an old home, formerly a bed and breakfast so it has many bathrooms, and the floors squeak. But we found it charming. Very clean! Nice neighborhood too. Quiet at night.

Overall excellent. Parking was tricky for the amount of people staying. Maybe suggestions for parking locations during winter with worries of alternate street side city rules. Very cozy spaces!

Old World Charm in Quiet Neighborhood

Our family (8 adults ages 16-76) met here between Christmas and the New Year to celebrate the holiday and spend time together. It's a lovely home. The bedrooms and beds are very nice and comfortable. It was great to have a bathroom in each room. My 75yo mother did have difficulty with the stairs, but we thought she might. (Just be aware of this in case you have any older members in your group. Everyone else did fine with them.) The kitchen is well equipped to cook in and we enjoyed making meals there each evening. The dining room table was perfect for our size group. The owners were easy to work with if you have any questions before or during your stay. Our group might have hiked more if the weather had been warmer. The town had a few cute shops (don't pass up Paper Moon) but a lot of places were closed for the winter holiday. We enjoyed walking around town though. The house was built in 1897 so it has some squeaks and slope, but that really just adds to the charm of the home. We would recommend this property after our very positive experience.

what a treat!

We adored our stay in the "McGregor Manor." The Victorian is just as lovely as the pictures. Every room had a touch of elegance. You can marvel at the detailed craftsmanship that went into every room. The furnishings were lovely, and the bedrooms were well-stocked with comfy pillows and blankets. Everything was great! We enjoyed exploring historic McGregor, and particularly liked the Paper Moon book/gift store and the By the Spoonful market. Nearby, both Pike's Peak and Effigy Mounds offer short and long hikes that we definitely recommend.

Siblings weekend get away

This is a beautiful older home, the wood work and things throughout is amazing. A lovely back yard and front porch for sitting and visiting. The town was fun and everyone we talked to in the shops were very friendly. Would definitely recommend this to anyone going to the area. The owners were very prompt in responses and we enjoyed ourselves greatly. Thank you again for sharing your home with us.

A Charming Step Back in Time

We loved our stay at this beautiful, quiet, comfortable yet elegant 1897 home. It had all the modern conveniences and comforts one could want, but the turn of the century atmosphere was maintained by the beautiful woodwork, wraparound porch, interior architectural features and glowing stained glass windows. There is also a lovely, flower-filled patio area in the yard for cookouts or relaxing. The house is only a few blocks from charming downtown McGregor where we discovered wonderful shops and restaurants. Antiques lovers could spend a day just looking around in the antique and rare book shops! We had an entertaining and informative time on the Maiden Voyage River Trip (complete with bald eagles!) and we enjoyed the breathtaking scenery at Wyalusing and Pike's Peak State Parks. Villa Louis is also a must for lovers of history and Victorian decor. And not to be forgotten, Eagles Landing Winery in nearby Marquette offers a great variety of award-winning local wines. Our entire trip was a delightful getaway, and our only regret was that we didn't plan a longer stay!

A wonderful place to stay to celebrate family milestone anniversaries.

This beautiful Victorian home met our families' needs beyond expectations. Four spacious bedrooms and four bathrooms upstairs, and a half bath downstairs. A beautiful spacious kitchen and sooooo much room on the main level. Also enjoyed the wrap around porch with a nice swing. This home is just a few blocks from downtown McGregor. So many unique shops to visit. Just a short drive to Marquette to enjoy the Mississippi River Boat Tour. Another short drive to hike at Pikes Peak State Park. A little longer drive, but definitely worth it, was to Dyersville to see where the movie Field of Dreams was filmed. Just happened that Dwier Brown, who played the father at the end of the movie, was there that day. Had several pictures taken with him, plus he autographed his book 'If You Build It' that was purchased by a couple in our party. We have so many wonderful memories of this weekend that was planned to celebrate our family milestone anniversaries - 50yrs, 25yrs, and 5yrs.

McGregor Manor

We had such a nice time in this home. It was nice that all of us had our own bedroom and bathroom and a kitchen. We enjoyed the patio out back, had a nice campfire and grilled. The house itself is amazing! We were like kids in a candy store when we 1st arrived. Every room in this house is beautiful. The house was clean an d we had everything we needed. McGregor is an awesome little town to hang out in. If your ever in the area this is the place to stay. We hope to be back again next year!

Family Reunion Getaway

McGregor Manon was the perfect home and location for our family. We were able to be close to reunion activities and have a fun and spacious home to come back to. The owners have provided many extra amenities. Having a bathroom in each bedroom was an extra bonus. The inside VRBO pictures are true to the product. The landscaping could use a little upkeep compared to the online images. This was a fantastic find. Thank you!

This home is comfy, well appointed, roomy and conveniently located for a largefamily reunion/getaway

McGregor Manor was perfect for our group of 4 couples on our yearly getaway. We had many gathering spaces, for a variety of group activities, plus each couple had their own private bedroom and bath. The kitchen was exceptionally well-stocked, with modern appliances, basic cooking spices, assorted utensils, dinner/serveware, and plentiful towels, etc. We enjoyed the small town ambience and visited the nearby state park for hiking. The owners were very helpful and easy to communicate with. We will definitely stay here again!
