We had a fantastic time in El Cuyo, and this property was perfect. We live in Tulum and wanted to get away from our work and the tourists, and also enjoy having our dogs with us. It was like being in Tulum over 15 years ago. Super tranquil, no hassles, only a few people on the beach (mostly some kiteboarders on the other end) and totally disconnected.
The house was amazing. We stayed in the 2nd floor Penthouse 1 bedroom, and it was just wonderful. The bedroom was so romantic and comfortable, more than adequate kitchen, great outdoor terrace, smartly set up indoor living space, and the dogs (when not playing on the beach) loved hanging out in the back shaded garden and visiting with some of the local pups, most of whom don't have homes (one cute little girl even came back to Tulum with us!). It was just what we wanted. It's located in a nice centro spot on the beach, and very peaceful.
The caretaker was available for anything we needed. She and her husband were very sweet. We speak Spanish and had no problems communicating and enjoyed a couple of conversations with them. We had them bring a langosta dinner one night, negotiated the price, and it was great.
We had brought some things from home, shopped for the rest before arrival, and lacked nothing while we were there. We bought fish from the port, and made them on the fire / grill in back.
Don't come here if you expect luxury resort accommodations and services. Don't come here if you want to be surrounded by other tourists (unless in high season).
Don't come here if you don't know how to relax.
Don't come here if you expect to be in a city with all the amenities of "home."
But by all means, come here if you want to enjoy a wonderful vacation and RELAX!!! We'll be back as soon as we can.
NOTES: If you travel with dogs, be respectful of their watch and care for picking up after them and ensuring they do not disturb the turtle nests. Our dogs are well trained and we do not let them out of sight more than you would a young child.
Expect some bugs. Tabanos and mosquitos are part of the eco-system, and I hate them as much as anyone, but they are part of beach and environment seasonally.
Sweep your floor! When staying on the beach, there is lots of SAND (yes, sand! Imagine?)! Just sweep the floor once a day, and/or put a bucket of water at the door to rinse your feet before entering. Even though there's an outdoor rinsing area, there's more sand on the stairs, etc.
