About this property

Sublime Modernist Architecture & Interior Design For The Discerning Traveler

Built in 1968 Casa Refugi is a renovated home true to its original mid-century modern style. All original features of this open concept home have been restored: soaring 10 foot ceilings, celestial windows, teak and articulated cabinetry, floor to ceiling glass walls and breathtaking sunny private courtyard. Spectacular south facing views to the San Jacinto Mountains (with Bob Hope's home!) in front and adjacent to one of 15 pools/spas and mature citrus and olive tree landscaping to the north. Pools are heated during the winter season, lit at night and have full BBQ facilities, tables, umbrellas, loungers and mini kitchens. This property sits back from the 18 hole private 7 Lakes golf course in an intimate and quiet setting: a 3 minute walk to the main club house which was designed by William Cody & Rick Harrison. Seven Lakes Country Club is a gated community with 24 hour guard service and night time roaming. Situated convenient to Route 111- it’s an easy 5 minute drive to the airport and all shopping, dining, nightlife, and sightseeing in the Desert communities nearby.

The property was lovely but we experienced some privacy issues with the owners staff entering the condo without us being there.

Light and airy condo at wonderful 7 Lakes

Exceptionally clean, well-maintained and well-equipped. Very comfortable. Accommodating, responsive owners. Interesting collection of architecture and design books a plus for that infrequent rainy day. Rarely available for good reason—don’t hesitate to book if it is.

Perfection

My thanks to owners, Georg and Suzanne! Excellent and pleasant communication with them throughout the reservation process and my stay. Kindly sent me updates of happenings at the club and in PS. Beautiful, clean, open MCM space with light streaming in from two outdoor patios. Vintage decor and vibe with updated and well-appointed kitchens and baths. Fabulous views and grounds and friendly neighbors. I loved every minute of my stay!

Great home, great location

We really enjoyed our stay and immersed ourselves in all that the area has to offer. From museums to dining out to hiking, all were easily accessible from our “temporary home” in Palm Springs. The house is lovely and easily accommodated us and a few friends who visited us during our stay. The property surrounding the house is beautifully kept and we walked miles with our dog around the Seven Lakes area everyday. A great place that I can highly recommend!

Perfection at Casa Refugi

I’ve rented homes in Palm Springs for the past seven winters through VPS and was very disappointed with all their properties. Pictures did not match what I ended up with. Casa Refugi is everything you see in each image plus more. The owners Georg and Suzanne helped me navigate a frustrating booking process and made it simple. Right from the beginning they took care of me. Opening the glass gate to the suite I felt I was in a true desert home transported back to the 60s. Mid century furniture, vintage art glass and collectibles and original art, all beautifully detailed with modern comfortable furnishings. The home was spotless, spacious quiet and private. Jody the house manager made me feel welcome from our first meeting and was a phone call away to help with any issues I may have. Quality beds, linens, pillows made a nights sleep a dream. Towels, Bathrobes, and slippers made the few steps to the pool and hot tub a spa like experience. The kitchen is well equipped with high end appliances, good knives, and every gadget you would need to create a gourmet meal effortlessly. If I wished not to cook the clubhouse was a 3 minute walk serving delicious food and drinks. Will I return, definitely as it is not only the lovely home I experienced but the warm and gracious attention from Georg and Suzanne making sure I enjoyed my time at Casa Refugi. Michael Renaud

Beautiful mid century modern 2 bd 2 bath home in a fantastic location

We stayed here for the month of December 2018 and found this to be the best place we had rented in Palm Springs since we started to do this every year since 2014. The house was immaculate - there was no cleaning required when we moved in (and I am very fussy about that). Even the sofa had just been cleaned (it was still a little damp - but not a problem after a few hours). There is lots of original art and original furniture and artefacts that give the place that Palm Springs vibe which we love. Loads of towels/bed linen, plush robes and quite a few cleaning/bathroom supplies. We were able to take our little dog, who loved laying in the sunshine every day in the private and enclosed front courtyard, which gets the sun all day. The pool is literally about 10 steps from the sliding doors in the living area and was almost like our own private pool. We swam every morning and only ever encountered one other person, who stayed for about 10 minutes when he joined us. The water in the pool was a great temperature and was well maintained too. Great hot tub - never anyone else in there either. BBQ by the pool was used once but was regularly cleaned by a man who came each week and cleaned it until every aspect of it gleamed. The executive golf course is very well maintained and we enjoyed a round there. The club house was an enjoyable place for a drink and food and had a nice atmosphere and very good service - loads of staff around who were all super helpful and pleasant. Seven Lakes is a very well run complex, the grounds are beautifully maintained and it feels very secure and quiet, and yet it is a minute away from Highway 111 or Gene Autry Trail. Everyone was pleasant and we enjoyed walking our little dog and meeting some of the other residents (and their furry friends). Loads of fruit trees, so no need to buy lemons, grapefruits or oranges! Location wise this place is excellent - easy drive to Palm Springs in one direction and also easy drive to Rancho or Palm Desert the other way. The owners were responsive and a pleasure to deal with, as was Jody the property manager. In conclusion I would say this was the perfect place to stay if you like beautiful, clean property with lots of high end amenities, access to a pool, and golf, and easy access to all the Palm Springs area has to offer. The pictures are very accurate, this place has been kept as per how it started out when the photos were shot. Thank you Georg and Suzanne.

A place in Paradise

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Georg and Suzanne’s lovely home. Everything in this home is the best from antiques to the original art work. The home is very bright and airy with a lot of glass sliding doors. The home is even more beautiful then the pictures shown in VRBO. We are very much looking forward to our stay here again next year.

Continues to impress!

This was our fifth year staying at Casa Refugi, and it really does get better every year. This year there was a lovely updated bathroom for the guest room. The unit is spotlessly clean and well maintained. Comfortable beds and furniture, and lots of towels and pillows. The kitchen and bar are well stocked for entertaining with everything you could wish for. Lots of new bars and restaurants in Palm Springs, so there's always something to do!

Keeps getting better!

We love our yearly visits to Casa Refugi! There is always something new and intriguing - artwork, books, this year a beautifully remodeled master bathroom. Well appointed kitchen and every bar accessory and cocktail glass you could wish for. Suntan In your own private courtyard or walk ten steps to the pool. Seven Lakes is a well maintained resort with nice pools, good barbecues, an executive length 18 hole gold course with fabulous views and a fun clubhouse.

January in Palm Springs at Casa Refugi.

This condo is perfect, beautifully decorated and has everything you might need for a stay. It is ideally situated in the complex. A wonderful pool right out your doorstep, golf course and club house. The clubhouse dining room has a delicious selection of menu items that are wonderfully prepared. The weather was far from perfect, but we considered ourselves lucky to be out of the snowy January at home. Thank you Georg and Suzanne for sharing your home.

A Palm Springs Gem!

We spent a month in this tastefully done up condo and loved every minute of it! We felt instantly at home and even got to read up on Palm Springs history and design thanks to the wonderful selection of books. The complex is quiet and the residents are happy and nice. We loved how friendly the guards at the gate were! The pool is warm (and literally three steps out the door), and the clubhouse food was memorable. Just two seconds away, it was so convenient, too, on the days we didn't go into town. We don't play golf, but it must be heaven for those who do! Did we mention amazing mountain views? The Bob Hope house from the patio? The crazy delicious cappuccino maker? Very comfortable beds? It's all there! And we can't wait to go back...

Pre Holiday Desert Sun

My husband and I decided to take a quick break before the holidays and get some sun on our faces. Palm Springs is just a short trip from Vancouver and we love all mid century modern and the vibe the city offers. Friends of us recommended Casa Refugi and we loved the place from the first second we passed through the door. The friendly and competent property manager showed us around, explained all we needed to know and few moments later we were in the hot tub just steps away from property. The pool was refreshing offering nice views of the San Jacinto mountains in the background. We arrived just in time to see that same night Palm Springs's Festival of Lights, it's Xmas parade. For tasty appetizers and cocktails we made our way back to the Seven Lakes Club restaurant. Great food and drinks. During our stay we visited the Art Museum showing some fantastic exhibitions, participated in the Walk the Inns, a self-guided tour through unique boutique hotels and historic inns and did some light hiking to mention a few activities. Casa Refugi feels very charming with it's Danish mid century modern decor and puts you back in time to the late 60's without any lack of comfort. The house, open to the south and the north, fills with a soft light you can only find in desert areas. If not venturing in between furniture shops, art galleries or on the look-out for the perfect holiday gift, we spent hours sitting in the living room with a glass of wine or a cocktail talking about solving the world's problems. Casa Refugi is a vacation home that feels like home and does not let you leave without a bit of sadness and the promise of returning soon.

Have been going to the Desert for quite of few years now , renting different spots each time. We found this rental thru word of mouth and have to say it is one of the best we have stayed at. Everything was in order with not needing anything more. A private south facing back patio with plenty of sun thru-out the day with great privacy. The pool area was only steps away with a great hot tub as well. If your looking for a great place to eat it"s only a few steps away at the clubhouse with a great liittle golf course . Location was excellent , centrally located to any place you may want to go to.

Casa Refugi

We have been home for a couple days now and we are already planning on booking another trip back to Casa Refugi. Everything you could imagine that Palm Springs represents was in this home. We found that the location was perfect. Close to the airport and 5 minutes to downtown Plam Springs. What made This property so unique was the pool and hot tub right out front of your sliding door not to mention how nicely it was decorated. We both felt like we were back in time in the 60's. It was also a first for us to pick fruit from one of the many fruit trees on the property. Fresh Lemonde anyone ???? Until next time Casa Refugi Thxs for being so kind to us.

Golf, pools, and cool mid-century vibe!

We just spent two wanderful months at Casa Refugi. We heartily concur with all the other rave reviews, and were so impressed, in fact, that's we bought one just like it. We're remodeling ours right now and just hope it will be as nice as Casa Refugi. The community is really great and if you don't buy your own place there, staying at Casa Refugi is the next best thing!!

A Wonderful Retreat

We stayed at Casa Refugi during April 2015 with friends. What a slice of heaven this place is. Fun and tasteful authentic mid century modern style throughout the home. Loved the Danish rosewood dry bar in the living area. Our friends couldn't stop offering to make cocktails. Spacious rooms with lots of light and a very comfortable bed. The patio off the guest bedroom we occupied, is very private and offers lovely views to the San Jacinto mountains in the west and the famous home of Bob Hope. The stored heat of the day is slowly released over the evening hours and makes the patio a comfortable place to enjoy a late outdoor dinner or a relaxing moment after a midnight hot-tub visit admiring the night sky with a glass of wine. Spent an entire day at Joshua Tree National Park, which really is quite beautiful and a reasonable 45 minute drive from the home. Went on an 8 mile hike into a desert oasis. Then some strolls through the Joshua trees, scrambles among amazing rock formations, etc. A truly fun day. Evening swim in the uber-refreshing (seemingly private) pool, and relaxing in the hot-tub to relieve the aches and pains of the day and get ready for cocktails at the Parker Hotel just outside the complex. Next day a truly amazing time at Sunnylands- a short 20 min drive away. Tremendously impressive gardens and architecture teeming with history and amazing art. Then downtown for lunch at the Taqueria Tlaquepaque (Mexican) an owner's recommendation. Excellent carnitas. Then back to the Seven Lakes Club House for cocktails. Super relaxed, fantastic service, and the drinks were absolutely HUGE. Sunset views from the lounge's outside deck of the golf course and fountains backed by the mountains was spectacular. Following day we did some city strolling. Visited art, antique and mid century furniture stores and a stop at one of the must try fresh date milkshake places in town. We enjoyed the stay at Casa Refugi in full. Beautiful home, lovely club facility with all the lush greens and so many pools. Close to the city and surroundings. Lots to do and see. The owners had supplied lots of excellent recommendations for things to do in the area, making our stay extra special. We hope to come back to Casa Refugi next year and invite our friends for a long weekend.

Stunning Mid Century Condo in Beautiful Gated Complex

My husband and I recently returned from staying at Casa Refugi with friends. It is located about 5 minutes from the airport. The gated resort is professionally maintained and very secure and safe. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and include an 18 hole golf course and 15 pools. We enjoyed many mornings picking grapefruit and lemons from several fruit trees which are planted around the resort. The condo exceeded our expectations. The owners are clearly passionate about design and art as they have honoured the era of the condo by appointing it in stunning mid century inspired art and furniture. This is a home for someone who appreciates quality and design. We enjoyed the well supplied kitchen and cooked most of our meals in the condo. We lacked for nothing. The master bedroom is very generous in size and has a comfortable king size bed. A second bedroom exists which accommodates two more people, as well. A pool is located essentially in the back yard of the condo. We rarely shared the pool with anyone else so it felt like our own private pool. This is a special place that we would highly recommend to anyone who loves to be surrounded by beauty. We will be back, for sure.

The owners reside in Vancouver BC Canada but have lived all over the world. Palm Springs is our choice for active relaxation with sunny dry weather year round.

Why they chose this property

Casa Refugi- Spanish for home and Swiss for refuge- embraces all that we love about the Palm Spring's lifestyle which begins and ends at the pool! This condo is adjacent but not too close to one of the 15 pools so you are guaranteed peaceful lounging steps from the home. At night the heated and lit pool and spa are dramatic and lovely to sit by on our back patio with your libations fixed at our own MCM bar in the living room. Mornings are cheerful and calm in the totally private south facing courtyard accessed by both the living room and guest bedroom. Here the mountain views are spectacular as you sip your coffee. The clean lined modernist architecture embodies indoor/outdoor living: soaring 10 foot high glass walls on either side of the living room as well as in each of the bedrooms, the classic celestial windows in the kitchen and dining room, ceramic tiled floors and original teak cabinetry has been lovingly restored. Hidden renos have updated all the HVAC and infrastructure for modern 21st century luxury living. Attached only on one side, with covered parking, the location is central but secluded, sunny and relaxing, private and calm. Convenient to both LAX and San Diego airports as well as 10 minutes from the Palm Springs airport you can hop on a plane and be at the pool in 1/2 a day from Canada or the US. Palm Springs is steeped in all things Mid Century Modern ('MCM') and has an active night life. Dance, dine, shop, hike, bike ride, tour museums- there is something for every age and lifestyle. We loved the property as it is private, peaceful and yet close to so many things that you can walk to restaurants, bars, pool, golf, tennis- all 1st class and sophisticated. The lush mature landscaping, incredible mountain and golf course views are breathtaking. The entire complex is incredibly maintained, safe and clean. With 15 pools to choose from you will never feel crowded or wanting a reclining lounge space!
In all- this is a total package for any traveler!

What makes this property unique

COMPLETELY re-furnished in May 2014, the interior design features furniture, art & accessories that are original (not copies!): 50-70s era or custom modern pieces made for Casa Refugi with an eye for comfort & style. The concept is sublime sophistication achieved with 60s Danish modern rosewood, cubist art, wool area rugs, plush bedding and linens, period lighting, modernist ceramics and American mid-century designers. Where comfort is important we've provided new custom pieces (beds/couches/patio furniture) referencing this era's genre. Where design and style rule- MCM classics & iconic pieces abound. You'll enjoy your Eames, Saarinen, Nelson, Benson, R Woodward, Royal Botania, Murano glass, Ingo Maurer, Herman Miller, Tom Dixon and Knoll knowing they are the real deal!
We provide an updated kitchen with stainless steel appliances, quality cookware, Espresso machine and gourmet cookbooks. Entertaining well is our goal. All monthly renters receive a $100 credit at the Clubhouse!
For cocktailing: we have a one-of-a-kind 60s solid rosewood bar that will be the centre of attention. An 8 ft long rosewood credenza houses the large screen TV and audio visual components. We've stocked it with DVD movies, music, games, & art books.
Both bedrooms will have king-sized beds, side by side desks for the power couple in the master and a single desk in the guest room. Huge mirrored closets with built in storage are present in each bedroom. The two baths-ensuite in the Master and separate for the guest- come stocked with plush terry robes, all bedding & towels for home and pool/patio. There is a washer and dryer in the home for convenience.
The outside private courtyard seats 6 with a dining table for 4 plus 2 loungers and market umbrella.
