POSITION
The first settlements in the territory of Monte San Savino probably go back to the Age of the Etruscans, and later the Romans succeeded to them. Therefore in the High Middle Ages, the town became a castle almost entirely encircled by walls.
Monte San Savino was the native town of the famous Renaissance sculptor Andrea Contucci, well known as "Sansovino" who was in charge of the transformation of the city.
Today, "Il Monte" (as the local people call it) is a rich country town with archeological and architectural findings. There are many buildings of medieval and renaissance origin to be visited such as the church of San Giovanni Baptist, the gothic church Agostino (with Vasari's artworks, the church of Santa Chiara with the artworks of Sansovinol.
Near Monte San Savino we can find different places to visit like the Castle of Gargonza or the Sanctuary of Le Vertighe. But Monte San Savino is also well known for its "Porchetta", a roasted pork flavoured with fennel, garlic and black pepper according to an ancient and traditional recipe. The Porchetta can be tasted and bought during the annual festival called "Sagra della Porchetta"
