The mouth of a freshwater tributary springing up in the lagoon is a phenomenon unique in the Adriatic. Thousands of birds use the reserve as a nesting, wintering or resting place. Various boat tours are offered from Marano Lagunare or Lignano, and the nature reserve's visitor center in Marano Lagunare is open daily all year round.
