About this property

Dordogne, near St Emilion-beautifully restored 18c village house+heated pool.

Tucked away in a quiet side street of a small bastide village, the property comprises three 18c cottages combined into one & most attractively renovated throughout. There is a large terrace garden, full of fragrant honeysuckles, jasmines & wisterers on two levels facing south with a large heated swimming pool with Roman end & diving board. The high surrounding walls make this a glorious sun trap & gives complete privacy. There is one double bedroom, plus ensuite bathroom, on the ground floor. The other bedrooms and bathrooms which are on the first floor, can be approached by the either the traditional elm internal stairs, or steps & balcony from the garden.
Villefranche de Lonchat nestles between the vineyards of Bordeaux and Bergerac. It has 2 doctors, pharmacy, bakery, convenience food store, 2 bar/restaurants and a beautifully renovated hotel, with an excellent restaurant. So you can walk for your bread & croissants, have a wonderful meal, and not have to worry about driving!

The Area: The Dordogne, rising high in the Massif Central, meanders through some of the most beautiful scenery in France, cutting through limestone gorges, dense forests, lush green meadows and fields of maize and tobacco, which eventually make way for the vineyards of Bergerac and Bordeaux, along their banks are farms, honey stoned villages, medieval towns, magnificent chateaux and fortified 'bastides' striking reminders of the Hundred Year war, when under English rule in the middle ages the area was over run with fighting armies. Our pretty village of Villefranche de Lonchat is one of these 'Bastide Anglais' The medieval streets of St Emilion are filled with wine shops, and restaurants (15 mins) Bergerac- with its old town, tobacco museum and vineyards is 40 mins away. Perigueux, is the cultural heart of the region. Its lovely ancient streets wind around its famous five domed cathedral, and the centre is always bubbling with life! (50 mins away). The Atlantique beaches are only 90 mins away.

Today: Good living is the all-pervasive theme of the Dordogne, and good living with a long history. Palaeolithic Man lived here and recorded the abundance of game on numerous cave walls. Nowadays, bison and mammoth are gone but a huge and tempting diversity of food is still on offer: tender lamb and game, confits of goose, duck or pork and famous pates flavoured with the 'black diamond' of the oak woods, the truffle. Just as well that the river and its siblings offer so many possibilities for sightseeing and exercise: canoeing, swimming or fishing or walking and riding. Gastronomy: Red and white wines of Bordeax-Medoc, St Emilion, Graves, Entre Deux Mers; red and white wines of Bererac, including Montbazillac sweet desert wine; red wines of Cahors, Foie gras; confits of goose, duck and port; tender lamb and game; pates flavoured with truffle; walnuts and Archachon oysters are all specialities of our area.

Prime attractions: Villefranche de Lonchat, has a night market, with music, dancing, BBQ, every Friday night, in the square, during July and August, a great night out for adults and children. plus the fete de Canton, in July, and village fete in August!
Bordeaux is synonymous with wine. The warm, sunny climate which favours the ripening of the grapes also makes this an ideal holiday is with an annual average temperature of only half a degree less than the Mediterranean. Villefranche de Lonchat nestles right between the Bordeaux and Bergerac vineyards. The village 'cave ' has a good inexpensive range of all the good regional wines. The local vineyards have plenty of wine tasting opportunities! Bordeaux, itself merits exploring with its fine 18c architecture, excellent shopping and restaurants, and at its heart the restored pedestrian-only area of the old city.
Festivals: La Felibree folk festival is held on the first Sunday in July, each year. Villefranche de Lonchat hosted it in 1997, and will again!

PERFECT!

This is just the most GORGEOUS property. We were looking for a quiet, stress-free holiday and we couldn't have chosen a better spot. The pool was absolute heaven and there was plenty of space indoors in which we could spread out and relax. We loved the village and our hosts were charming. We will be back.

Grande maison, belle piscine.

Fantastic house in lovely village location!

This is a beautiful house in a lovely village which although small has everything you could possibly need within a 2 min walk; bakery, supermarket and 4 bars/restaurants! The house is spacious, and beautifully furnished and the outdoor area is completely secluded and has lots of areas of sun and shade. The children spent hours in the lovely swimming pool which was warm and clean and they absolutely loved the diving board! There was a Lake only a 5/10 minute drive away with own beach and cafe/snack restaurant. The setting was idyllic; the water lovely to swim in and also free canoeing which we all enjoyed. We also visited St Emilion and Bergerac - both easily accessible and beautiful towns, full of character. The owners, Kim and Russ, could not have been more helpful... nothing was too much trouble - they were so friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be back - thank you! Emma, Toby and the girls xx

Fabulous place to stay!

We had such a happy and relaxed family holiday in this fabulous, spacious house with the best pool! The pool was so clean, heated & totally idyllic. Our boys loved the diving board (so did the adults!) and they happily played for hours in the pool each day. We enjoyed exploring the local area & there was plenty to see and do. Kim and Russ were brilliant hosts - very discreet but made sure everything was fine and couldn't have been more helpful. We would love to return again!

Perfect holiday homE with fabulous hosts

We had a wonderful 2 weeks at Kim and Russ's home. It definitely feels like a home and not just a holiday let, beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you could possibly need and extremely easy and comfortable to live in. The photos definitely do not do justice to the house or the grounds. The pool is great but the overall outdoor space is really lovely, with plentiful seating and areas for every part of the day and sun or shade, depending on your preference! I also really liked their planting and the interesting ornaments around the space. If you are a dog owner, this is the perfect property. The back is totally enclosed and the pool can be separated from the rest of the area by putting up a gate. We were totally comfortable leaving the dogs on the few occasions when we went out without them. Russ and Kim popped in to check on them too if they knew they were 'home alone' although we didn't ask them to do so and that was very much appreciated. The nearby lake is also a bonus for the days when its uncomfortably hot for the dogs . The village is small but very friendly - the Friday night gatherings in the Square are a must, as others have mentioned. There are plenty of places to visit, we went to Peregueux, St Emillion and Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, all of which we recommend, and also did some wine tastings at local Chateaux. Finally, Kim and Russ were the most amazing hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. We absolutely loved them both and hope we see them again soon. And of course, Charlie, who is a little superstar! Thnaks you all for a wonderful holiday.

A beautiful fully equipt house with everything you need for a perfect stay in this stunning region. The pool is amazing and with the stunning weather much needed to cool off. Fantastic

The owners are delightful, accommodating and knowledgeable like old friends and their house is well stocked, large and comfortable..very deceiving from the street. The village of Villefranche-de-Lonchat with its unbelievably friendly summer block parties, a roving circus, small museum, and a World Class restaurant- L’UN DES SENS , could not have been more welcoming! We felt like we were residents from the first day of our 15 day stay. Having the beautiful pool and court yard was so relaxing after long days of exploring this historic and beautiful part of France. Every day was filled with Châteaus, wine tasting, and magnificent landscapesand Every person we met was helpful and kind. Thank you for this amazing vacation.

A lovely holiday!!!

What a lovely holiday experience we had staying in Les Martinets! The house was really well equipped with some lovely and interesting features (loads of antiques) and fascinating nicknacks. There were eight of us plus a baby and we found the house very spacious, with lots of areas for the four children to relax and do their own thing too. The beds were all comfortable and it was great to have the ensuites/bathroom facilities. Everything we needed was supplied in the kitchen/dining area for our catering needs - we didn't venture far most days for it was a truly relaxing holiday we were after and were not disappointed. Indeed, the facilities all round - including local boulangeries, restaurants and nearby supermarkets supplied everything we needed. It was super to have the laundry area (which was well used on a daily basis!) and this extra room was perfect for accommodating the dog cage and for our pets to cool down/sleep. Kim, Russ and Charlie made our dogs feel so at home too! The garden was an absolute sun trap, facing due south. Indeed we think the pool area and garden must have been designed with our family in mind because it was absolutely perfect and totally secure for our dogs to exercise. During our stay the pool was well used and thoroughly enjoyed by all of us, including 'little baby'! Our hosts, Kim and Russ (not to forget Charlie), became our friends who kindly invited us round for drinks one evening which we can honestly say was a lovely and fun-filled evening! We had such a wonderful time in their company and so invited them out to a local restaurant for dinner one evening which turned out to be another wonderful and enjoyable night. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for Kim and Russ to help accommodate us and to ensure our stay was as near perfect as possible. Thank you. Dear Kim, Russ and Charlie - we intend to stay friends and keep in touch and certainly hope to stay at your wonderful holiday home again.xx

A Perfect, Picturesque Property

We stayed here for a week with our two children (aged 8 and 10). The house was amazing and spotlessly clean. It was so spacious and full of interesting nooks, crannies and Knick Knacks, all carefully sourced by the lovely owners, to ensure that holiday makers had plenty of items for cooking, leisure and relaxation. The kitchen cupboards were full of gadgets, crockery and utensils, it really felt like home from home. We had 5 bedrooms, all of which were tastefully furnished and two were ensuite. We stayed in the bedroom with the four poster bed, where I felt like royalty every night. It was sweet, as our son labelled one of the other rooms as 'The Bridal room', as he felt that it was very beautifully furnished and very glamorous. The children had an amazing week. They loved the pool and being able to dive off the spring board. They loved the space in the house to be able to go off into their own corner and be alone/have some quiet time. Kim and Russell were so helpful, informative and friendly throughout the booking process. Both had a great sense of fun and were committed to ensuring we had a relaxing, comfortable holiday - nothing was too much trouble. During the summer, every Friday, the local village square turns into a mini festival for the locals. We went down there and enjoyed sitting out on the trestle tables, eating and drinking the street food and soaking up the atmosphere. We enjoyed popping into the village everyday to buy produce and to check out the restaurants. Mid week, the pizza van also visited which was a real novelty. There was lots to do in the area. We took the kids to the local lake where they could swim and kayak (free of charge). St Emilion was breathtakingly beautiful, as was some of the surrounding villages which were dotted around on the Dordogne. The house is ideally located for Bordeaux and Bregerac airports, to fully explore the Dordogne or to nip up to the coast. We spent 3 nights first at Arcachon and so it was the perfect 2 centre break. We would love to visit again in the future. We can highly recommend this beautiful house. Unlike a lot of French properties, we could just spill out of bed and pop into the pool which also had the added benefit of being heated.

Lovely house in small French village

We spent two weeks in this lovely house in Villefranche. The house is ideally situated in the village, a two minute walk to the square but still quiet and private. The house is beautiful, comfortable, and very spacious. The pool is fabulous, situated in a completely private walled garden. Kim and Russ were wonderful, welcoming and helpful, yet totally unobtrusive. Anything we needed Kim was there to help. We loved the Friday night food market and were there for the firemen's dinner of mussels and fries. It was fun to feel part of the village for a couple of weeks. St Emilion is a short drive away and definitely worth the visit. The nearby lake was good for walking the dog and outdoor dining. I would highly recommend this property for a lovely relaxing vacation.

Great location in the south of France with excellent facilities nearby (lake with man made beach is a must!). Very friendly village with Friday evening entertainment which is great for youngsters. Fantastic holiday

We stayed with our two adult daughters and two teen-aged granddaughters and found the accommodation perfect for everyone to spread out and have their own room. The surrounding area is beautiful with places like Bergerac and St Emilion within an hours drive. As the weather was perfect we made good use of the pool which was fantastic. To round off our stay perfectly we went to the village square for the weekly fiesta. Kim & Russ were extremely helpful but unobtrusive hosts.

We loved this home and location!

We were a family group of 5 women, ages 37-66. The house is exactly as described, only better. The weather was in the 90's each day (60's at night), and the pool was clean and lovely. Charming decor, well-equipped kitchen, comfy beds with English/American (= not square) pillows. Originally 3 houses joined as one, the current layout is sprawling with areas for quiet and privacy. The town of St. Emilion, surrounded by 100+ wineries, is only 30 minutes away. But don't miss the little La Plante winery on the edge of Villefranche: very good rose wine, and the winemaker tells delightful stories. We just missed the town festival on the last Saturday of July. The Commerce Hotel/Restaurant in town has an French country menu, lovely dining room; not cheap, but less than Paris. The brasserie's menu features local/organic items. We also visited the local foie gras producer (Kim knows his name), whose ducks free-range. They sell several different kinds of foie gras (delicious!), and ship gift assortments too. Kim, our host, lives nearby and takes excellent care of the house and guests; never intrusive, happy to assist if needed. We had a wonderful time in our Villefranche "home", and highly recommend the property and hosts.
