This charming cottage, built in 1964, has been recently updated without ruining the architectural simplicity of its design. The spectacular view of the lake and the peaceful environment make this spot an amazing retreat. The fully functional kitchen has everything you need to make your own meals - stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, coffee maker plus a little bit of the basics such as salt, spices, oil and flour. The deck has a gas BBQ, a dining table and chairs, and a separate seating area. The house has wi-fi, a portable DVD player (no TV), stereo, telephone, washer and dryer. The property and its secluded sandy beach is on the west arm of Kootenay Lake just 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Nelson. There is a lot to do in Nelson plus parks, hiking, skiing and hot springs close by.

Real gem to stay at just outside of Nelson. Although at first you may hear the traffic noise, this is more than offset by a beautiful view of the lake to enjoy a glass of your favourite beverage and private beach to the cabin below (chairs on the beach). We enjoyed our time on the beach and paddle boarding each day. Overall the cabin was very clean, and well appointed, and would certainly stay here again and recommend to friends and family!
This was our 2nd time staying here and it was just as fantastic this time. Chris is a great host and excellent communicator. The cabin was spotless inside and out and very well stocked. Kootenay Lake is probably my favourite place on earth. We love the privacy of the cabin and the private beach. I hope we’ll get to go back soon.

Not as advertised
We were disappointed on several things about this property. The pictures used to advertise were out of date and did not represent what we expected. They do need to update the photos.
We did have some other issues but Chris was great to respond to get things corrected The cottage is well supplied and once the beach was cleaned up the beach was great and the view from the deck down the lake is spectacular.
The property is right off the highway and the traffic noise can be loud. I picked this property because of the beach. It is nice to have your own beach and lake location
We had a great time, very private location on the lake. There is an adjustment to the road noise if you’re not used to that kind of thing. Overall it was a great experience and plan to come back next year. The cottage has beautiful views, and a wonderful private beach for hanging out, and swimming . The cottage was cozy and we felt right at home. Communications were great with Chris.
The cottage has amazing views of the lake, private setting. There is a covered deck that can be enjoyed in all kinds of weather. The cottage is very well stocked. The private beach is a 2 minute walk down hill, shallow water entry with comfortable chairs, umbrella and side tables which makes it nice to stay there for hours. The location is great, a short 10 minute drive to Nelson. Chris is an amazing host, quick to reply to any questions you may have. We would love to go back again some day.
We come here every year sometimes twice
per year it’s absolutely our favourite place to be , private beach , fully equipped cabin it’s our relaxing place to be and we love it .
This cottage was exactly what we were looking for. Completely private and secluded including the beach (which appeared to have had the sand raked prior to our arrival! Unexpected and appreciated!) The cottage was immaculate and anything one might need was provided) The quintessential cottage experience! There is some traffic noise from nearby highway but it didn't bother us . Highly recommend!
Just about perfect! We stayed for two weeks and enjoyed every moment except for the weather which turned out to be cold and damp, not the fault of the house or host.
This was our third stay in two years, so we must like this place very much!
We had a fabulous stay enjoying the views across the lake, the visiting deer, the fireplace and being out of town. Cabin has everything you need to get away.
The view ...the beach...and a fully organized and functional kitchen made our retreat perfect. The historic pictures of family on the walls showed me that this was a well loved abode....we will be back...and hopefully rent some kayaks.
Amazing cabin with the perfect beach! Thank you for sharing your historic little piece of history with our family. We loved the photos on the walls and architecture the most!
We had a great time in Nelson at this wonderful little piece of paradise. While there were a few cobwebs and dust bunnies floating around, the private beach and magnificent views certainly made up for them! The location is unparalleled and we were very happy with how well-stocked the kitchen was. Everything you could need right on the shores of a pristine lake!
We really enjoyed our nook on the lake. Good swimming and kayaking. The dog had a great time. Was all really smooth. Close enough to Nelson to get food and take out. The surrounding area had some amazing hiking and even bagged some giant lobster mushrooms on one of the hikes.
We couldn't be happier with our stay. Everything about this cottage is great. The swimming, the sunsets and the beach are what we are going to remember!
This was by far my favourite VRBO stay I’ve had. Literally lakefront with a private beach, a rogue bear that wakes through, and nightly fires on the beach were beyond dreamlike. We had Nelson close enough but we were also in the middle of the woods with our private slice of heaven. The photos we took are being printed and hung! Hands off property manager next door and the cabin is perfectly appointed. The bathroom is large with plenty of linens. The rooms are nice and comfortable and the kitchen/dining/family area flow nicely with floor to ceiling windows. The deck that stretches the back two sides of the house was were we spent most of our time there. There is so much to do in the area including fishing (we had a great meal with our catches), the ghost town Sandor, shopping and dining in Nelson. We loved it so much, we decided to buy there in 6 Mile on day. Just stunning!
Really loved our week at this Kootenay Lake gem! Love the architecture of the cabin, the generous covered deck with close-by lake view, the private beach…a perfect holiday spot to reach maximum relaxation and calm.

About the host
Hosted by Chris Ubick
Our mother, Janet, purchased this property in 1928 when the best way to get there was by boat from Nelson. She taught school in Nelson and loved the outdoors. It was an apple farm and the old house that they used for camping is right next door the the cottage (which Janet and her husband built in 1964). Our cousins live in the next two houses along the lake and step in as property hosts while we are away.
Why they chose this property
Janet's parents moved to Nelson in the 1890's and her father, Alexander Carrie, was the architect of many of the historic buildings in downtown Nelson. But the biggest reason they all stayed is the beauty of the Kootenays.
What makes this property unique
The house is comfortable, the beach is relaxing, the views are spectacular and there are so many activities minutes away but you won't want to leave.
