About this property

Enjoy country life on a beautiful mountain horse farm setting

TAKE ADVANTAGE: A15% DISCOUNT FOR A STAY OF FIVE DAYS OR LONGER
Turtle Brook Farm. setting on over 100 acres, is home to some half dozen Morgan horses and offers visitors equestrian opportunities, but its accommodations are equally suitable for hikers, fishermen, birders, mountain bikers or anyone else looking to getaway to the heart of Bath County's unspoiled mountain splendor. Public access to the trout-rich Jackson River in Hidden Valley is just 10 minutes away.
The Gold Finch Cabin accommodate a family of four or two couples. The Gold Finch has a fully equipped kitchen, grilling facilities, pleasant living areas and porches and decks to take in wonderful farm views. The cabin is very comfortably and tastefully furnished.
All bedding, towels, linens, kitchenware are provided. The Goldfinch cabin has a large campfire pit for cool summer evenings. Firewood is available at no extra charge.

Should you want to bring your own horse our facility includes a 12 x24 run in sheds with paddocks, a working ring, pasturage and close proximity to several thousand acres of U.S. Forest land across Cobbler Mountain into Hidden Valley. We offer riding lessons as well as meaningful equine interaction for those, especially young children, who may be up close to these beautiful animals for the first time. It is amazing what close contact with a horse can do for a child's self-confidence.
Our private 127 acre environment is a wonderful blend of meadows, pasture land and mountain trail access all of which is open to our guests. Across the fields from our 1840's farm house is a small pond with a picnic area ideal for youngsters' fishing fun. A second stream fed pond, The Dragon Fly Pond, provides another peaceful setting and fishing opportunity. Guests will enjoy the hammock and deck overlooking the bull frog laden pond and watching the colorful dragon flies that lend their name to the site.. There are multiple lovely walks throughout the farm and serious hiking on Cobbler Mountain and throughout the county.
The bird and game populations on the farm are profuse and greatly varied ranging from Baltimore Orioles to Red Tail Hawks and from deer to black bear and foxes. Night skies are dark and filled with a brilliant display of stars above and, in summer, filled all around you with thousands and thousands of industrious fireflies.
If you read Turtle Brook Farm's reviews you will find that most guests come here to escape the rigors of their crowded urban or suburban lives. There are plenty of good books to read and games to play and sights to see, but cell phone service is sketchy except at the farm house. And the Warm Springs library is set up for any and all computer needs.
Your hosts, Lea and Claudia Campbell are always ready to answer questions, offer advice or resupply your cabin, but we know you have not come here to visit us and that you relish your privacy. Once on the farm, you are in your own world.
Turtle Brook is conveniently located on U.S. 220, just two and a half miles north of the county seat of Warm Springs and eight miles north of The Homestead Resort. Lake Moomaw and Douthat State Park are within a 45 minute drive and many other natural attractions of the Allegheny Highlands are within easy reach.

stay here over your other saved places!

I dont have a single complaint about this cabin :) everytjing is nicely maintained and the owners are not only so kind but also so quick to reply and easy to get a hold of. this canin we stayed in, the gold finch, is also a hot spot for wild life to come visit (bords, bunnies!) and with a cozy atmosphere and a bonfire and grill as well!

Beautiful Property with lots of amenities in a great country location

My girlfriend and I were incredibly pleased with our stay along with our 2 Dachshunds. The cabin was clean and spacious along with a radio and some CD's to listen and games to play. But most of our time was spent outside, laying in the hammock, lounging in the chairs by the fire, cooking on the charcoal grill, and exploring the warm springs, the Jackson River and trails in the area. There are also plenty of stores and restaurants nearby. Would definitely stay again.

Warm welcome and stay in Warm Springs.

Fabulous working horse farm, cute comfortable cottages, great hiking trails, and best of all the Warm Springs Pools just minutes away. Great local grocery store (IGA) 6 miles or so away, with a great wine cave.

Perfect Getaway

This was a perfect getaway for our 32nd wedding anniversary. Lea and Claudia were excellent host. Everything was ready to go when we arrived. The Goldfinch cabin and all it's surroundings were well maintained, quiet and provided a very relaxing atmosphere. I highly recommend this property and we will certainly book again.

Lovely Mountain Getaway

If you’re looking for an idyllic place to stay near Warm Springs and Hot Springs, Virginia, Turtle Brook Farms is the place to stay!! There are 2 rustic looking but comfortable cabins on this 120 plus acre horse farm. Each cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, charcoal grill, covered porches, fire pit and heat for the cool fall and spring evenings. Lee and Claudia are wonderful hosts; very welcoming and responsive. In fact our first day there Claudia stopped by to introduce herself and tell us about some of the local attractions and trails!! The views of the stars at night is amazing!! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there, and will definitely stay there again the next time we’re in the area!!

Relaxing Girls Weekend

My friend and I arrived on the property ay different times and were both greeted by different members of the family, who showed us to our cabin. The cabin was amazing and had everything we needed. There is no cell5service or TV which was amazing. It allowed us to talk, play cards, and learn more about eachother. The trails behind the cabins are a great touch as well. We enjoyed a afternoon hike in the cool weather. I will definitely he returning with my son and husband for a long weekend.

PERFECT

Spouse, dog and I stayed for 10 days and it was the perfect retreat. It was a lovely escape, with no cell phone, no wifi, no tv. Just nature, hiking, and horses. Claudia, Lea, and Sally were The Perfect onsite hosts; almost like family, kind, inclusive, inviting, and totally non-intrusive. The horses are the sweetest, most well behaved horses ever, and the cabin was light and airy (in July) and had everything we needed.

Exceeded our Expectations!

What a lovely property, and what hospitable owners! When we arrived, Lea promptly greeted us and gave us the lay of the land. The home was just as we'd hoped, with wonderful views from both porches (one for morning coffee and sunrise and one for evening wine and sunset), a well-placed hammock, and a fire pit which came in handy under the stars in the cool evenings. Our children loved exploring the property, visiting with the horses (Cammy was their favorite, but Little Guy was pretty cool too), and accompanying us on hikes around the various trails and loops that the Campbells have maintained in the wooded areas behind their property. Claudia was out of town this weekend, but Lea was a friendly presence, always there to help, offer a friendly greeting, and answer any questions we (or our kids) might have, without ever being overbearing. What a great place, and we look forward to returning sometime soon!

Serenity

I almost do not want to post this and keep this gem all to myself but, here I go. This place is super remote. So much so that your cell phones will not work. It is amazing if you are looking for a complete unplug from the bustling world. When we pulled up, we saw beautiful Morgan horses and were met by the property owner, Claudia who gave us a great rundown of the property and the surrounding area. It is quiet, cozy, and located around 15 minutes from picturesque national forests, a beautiful golf course, and a town with no red lights but does have several nice restaurants and a brewery! The cabin had a classic rustic look but the inside was far from it. There was a cozy bedroom, a pretty large bathroom with plenty of hot water, and a large living area with full kitchen. If a person wanted, they could buy groceries and relax away from the world in this place as it even has its own hiking trails! I truly appreciate Claudia and Lea for letting us stay there. It really is the peace and serenity we needed. - Mark and Nanette

Beautiful Bucolic Farm Setting with Helpful Hosts

Very nice cabin on a beautiful farm and woodlands property for an escape from the digital world. My boys enjoyed fishing at the Dragonfly Pond, petting the horses, and campfires at night. Turtlebrook Farm

A wonderful peaceful and beautiful mountain getaway. Lea and Claudia were so kind and went above and beyond in making sure our stay was comfortable and we well informed about all that beautiful Bath County has to offer. They were so welcoming and gracious. We loved our hosts, the cozy and comfortable house, the horses, birds and the mountains, and all the beauty that surrounded us. Thank you for letting us stay at Turtlebook Farm, a very special place. We hope we can visit again.

About the host

Hosted by Claudia Campbell

Host profile image
Lea and Claudia Campbell have been a part of life in the western Virginia mountains for nearly 30 years. Lea is a retired newspaper man who for almost 20 years owned and published The Recorder, the county seat weekly for Bath and Highland Counties. Claudia is a lifelong horsewoman and mother of three grown children. Her equestrian interests have grown to include certification as an equestrian body worker with a special emphasis on equine myofacial release therapy. Through her efforts the farm's central theme is the maintenance of a small herd of Morgan horses which are used for trail riding, riding lessons and occasional breeding.
Claudia traveled extensively while growing up as the daughter on Naval parents. After graduating from Radford University, she went into the music/entertainment business.
Lea is a graduate of the University of Virginia. He taught school for several years before beginning his more than 40 year commitment to journalism.
The couple built the rental cabins over 10 years ago as a retirement project and have taken great pleasure in sharing the farm with the many guests who have visited in that time. Both agree that being hosts to visitors appreciative of our environment from all around the region has added much to our own appreciation of the place we call home.

Why they chose this property

I first came to this area when I was sixteen, some 58 years ago. I drove from Charlottesville Virginia to Monterey in Highland County where we had lunch at the Monterey Inn. I knew as soon as we crested Jack Mountain and wound down to the village, this was a place to which I would return. And throughout my journalism career, I did. Time and time again.
When three decades later the opportunity arose to purchase The Recorder, I found a way to make it happen. It meant leaving a successful corporate career, moving from a new home we had just built in Chapel Hill and convincing my water oriented wife that here would be a perfect place to rear or three young children. No easy task, but we have never looked back. Montana likes to tout itself as "the last best place." Maybe, but we would suggest that title belongs to the completely unspoiled vistas of Bath and Highland counties.

What makes this property unique

There are many beautiful places surrounding our farm, but none more comfortable and welcoming than Turtle Brook. From the long range views of distant ranges to our east and south to the intimate relationship with Cobbler Mountain rising from our back yard we are blessed with a daily visual feast. Throw in rolling paddocks and pasture land, burbling Turtle Brook and deep forest cover and we truly live in a natural wonderland. That we have been able to create both a vacation business and a working horse farm that enhances this extraordinary setting rather than exploiting it deepens our knowledge that we are fortunate to be stewards of this place.
