About this property

Charming Old Waterfront Cabin on Pristine S. Croix River near Marine-on-St-Croix

Amazingly, this peaceful, rustic family cottage is located less than a hour from the Twin Cities!

Built in the 1920s and full of vintage charm, this cozy gem sits nestled in a grove of white pines, right on the bank of the beautiful St. Croix River. Our stretch of the river was the first to be designated a Wild & Scenic River by the federal government in 1972. This halted development on the water; the view of the opposite (Wisconsin) side of the river is of undeveloped forest and river flats laced with sloughs, where eagles, herons, beaver, and other wildlife can be sighted. The house is one of the only properties available for rent on this stretch of the river, and the closest to the water.

Extending toward the river bank is the front porch, which is screened on three sides and offers a view of the river and the pines that tower above. French doors separate this porch from the main living area, which, along with the dining area, is located in one large central room. The comfy sofa is a hide-a-bed. To keep you toasty on cool evenings, there is a Jotul cast-iron wood-burning stove on the elevated brick hearth, and a gas heater in one corner.

One small bedroom opens off the living area (and is one step down); it has two small single beds, suitable for children and not-large adults. Another door opens from this room into the adjacent master bedroom.

Past the dining area is the kitchen, with front loading washer and dryer under the butcher-block counter (there's a clothes-line strung between two trees, as well, with clothes-pins provided). An outdoor gas grill is also at your disposal.

Off the kitchen, and one step down, is a small hallway leading to the three-quarters (shower, no tub) bathroom, master bedroom (with queen-sized bed), and best of all, a screened sleeping porch, where guests have the feeling that they are really sleeping out in the woods. This porch has two twin beds that can be joined to make a king (king sheets are available for this purpose).

All three bedrooms offer views of the river. As a vintage cabin, it is furnished eclectically, with simple furniture, including a few unassuming antiques. This house is one of a vanishing breed, a simple, sweet summer place that isn't 'retro' because it's the real thing.

Guests have use of a shared boat landing/swimming area with a dock. (A canoe and two sit-on-top-kayaks are also available for renters' use.) If you have a boat of your own to put in, there is a public boat-launch just upstream from us, and from there you may keep your boat on our shoreline. (Note that we are in a Slow/No Wake zone.)

The St. Croix is wonderful for swimming, fishing, paddling, birdwatching, hanging out on sandbars ... and just relaxing and watching the river glide by.

Although secluded, the house is one mile from O’Brien State Park with many kilometers of hiking trails; five minutes each from the historic villages of Marine-on-St.-Croix and Scandia (the first Swedish settlement in the U.S.); and twenty minutes each to Stillwater, Taylor's Falls/St. Croix Falls, and Forest Lake, which offer rock-climbing, antique shops, coffee shops, gourmet restaurants, paddlewheel river-boat rides, movies, and more.

Some guests have even commuted to the Twin Cities while staying here! There is no public transportation in the area — you must have a car.

We DO now have serviceable wifi. Though you may wish to thoroughly unplug :)

Well-behaved, mellow, housebroken dogs are welcome, though we ask that you please: Pick up after your dog; Never leave your dog unattended, either inside or outside; Keep your dog off the furniture; Bring your own dog blanket or dog bed. There is often a friendly dog nearby who has been known to wander over to say hello to renters.

If summer doesn't work out for you, consider post-Labor Day; that time of year is beautiful, too, as the leaves begin to change and the river is even quieter. Please note when renting in cooler months that of the five beds in the house (a queen and four twins), two of the twins, as described above, are on a porch with screens on two sides.

If you wish to have overnight guests over and beyond our limit of 6 guests, please discuss with us.

This house is strictly non-smoking.

Please note that the low-tech nature of this cabin means that there is no air-conditioning. Its location in the woods and down in the valley means that it is usually cooler than the surrounding area. We supply electric fans, and there are ceiling fans in the kitchen, LR/DR, and queen bedroom. Most people find these, and/or dips in the river, to be ample for their needs.

Nostalgic cabin

Upon walking into the cabin for the first time, we were struck by nostalgia. It was like walking into my grandma's lake cabin from years ago when she wouldn't let us change anything! Loved it! There's plenty of space to spread out, comfy and cozy beds, tons of reading material, lovely family area that would seat quite a few. The screened in porch was great for visiting while gazing at the river and the sleeping porch was wonderful. I would highly recommend a visit to this step back in time. =)

Great St Croix Get Together!!!

This is an incredibly authentic cabin and in such a gorgeous location; literally overlooks the St Croix There’s a nice, large screened in porch with comfy wicker furniture to enjoy all the natural beauty. The cabin is fully furnished and is very “cozy”. Kathy (the owner) provided us with all the information we needed for a nice visit to Hudson & Stillwater. We all agreed we’d love to come back for another stay soon!

Peaceful Natural Beauty Surrounds This Charming Clean Cottage

We loved our stay at The Charming Old Cottage. The cottage was super clean and offered lovely decor, a well-appointed kitchen, and comfy beds and bedding. The fireplace came with ample extra wood available in the little shed up the hill, with leather work gloves and a wheelbarrow for easy transport. The cottage is located just feet away from the mighty St. Croix River, and we were blessed with beautiful weather and fall colors. We enjoyed chatting with the kind family members/owners to learn some history about the cottage. Communication and information were timely and helpful. This is one of our favorite VRBO places to stay. We will be visiting again.

This quaint rustic cabin is nestled into the river bluffs and feels like you are hours away from any hustle and bustle. It is like stepping back in time to simpler days while incorporating just enough modern conveniences to make it comfortable and easy. The hosts were absolutely lovely and incredibly helpful. A little slice of heaven on the river

If you want a peaceful escape and stunning views of the St. Croix River, this rustic cabin is it! All of the amenities were perfect for our weekend stay. We liked the rustic feel and were very comfortable in all aspects. It's so beautiful and peaceful on the shore of the river...just so relaxing! It reminded me so much of going to my aunt and uncle's cabin as a kid...very special nostalgia! We enjoyed paddling in the canoe and loved soaking up the peace and beauty of it all from the screen porch. It was also a perfect place to bring our dogs. Next time, we'll add another day to our stay to enjoy the river more! Thanks so much for sharing your little slice of heaven with us.

We loved this wonderful cabin time with our daughter and grand daughter! The house had all the room and features that we needed. The antiques and setting felt like a step back into a simpler time. We especially enjoyed the river views plus canoeing. We were also close to friends and family in the Twin Cities.

Relaxing Rustic Stay

We stayed at this picturesque cottage for a week while spending time exploring the St Croix River. It's very rustic with lots of charm. It creaks and moans but that's part of the charm. Our hosts were a wealth of information about the cottage's history and area. We paddle boarded down the St Croix to William Obrien St Park. It was a fun experience.

Rustic building with serious summer camp vibes, charming and no-fuss decor, no TV but WiFi access for necessities, lovely screen porch for board games, cards and just hanging out, trees and river views, birds and frogs, sunrise over the Wisconsin bluffs - a great summer getaway.

Amazing views but very rustic

The location and views were amazing but the cabin was a little too rustic for our family. We did enjoy hanging in the hammocks overlooking the river, the canoe cruises and building fairy houses. Unfortunately we had too many visits from critters inside the cabin during our stay. Moths and mouse droppings every day inside the cottage was an unexpected surprise. We were not informed of toilet paper (they supply one roll and we do not recall seeing in listing we were supposed to bring our own) and bathroom/kitchen soap (bathroom was empty and kitchen was low) policy until we were there but owner’s daughter brought some more after a discussion. No problems if they would have made this more clear in listing. Could be an amazing place with a little extra care inside the cabin to eliminate critters. Definitely a great spot.

Peaceful retreat close to home!

Quite incredible that this unspoiled, family-owned property (since 1911) is so close to home. Just a 50 or so minute drive from St. Paul! Rustic, vintage cottage on the banks of the St. Croix. It's a simple and comfortable hideaway. No unnecessary frills just the basics which suited us just fine! - Easily sleeps 6 in three small bedrooms. One bedroom is screened on two sides so it's like sleeping outside, only better! - Spacious screen porch facing the river -- we enjoyed morning coffee here, relaxed in the evening and listed to the squirrels, birds and wind rustling through the trees. - Canoe rides in the early morning or late afternoon -- best way to enjoy the river. A bit tricky to get the canoe in the water -- but I'm 71 and and my friend is 68 -- if we could handle it anyone can! We paddled up river to a sandbar and enjoyed a cooling river swim. - All the basics in the kitchen and a nice dining table for gracious meals together. All told -- a relaxing week and a nice break from the stress of the city with COVID restrictions. Lovely owners. A lot of family history here.

Gorgeous setting

Great river beauty, so much fun to jump in. Private, quiet, wonderful sleeping. Fun kayaking. The cabin is great but it is rustic. There were mice and a couple of red squirrels in the cabin. So if you are squeamish this might not be the place for you. I thought it was wonderful.

PEACE

Are you seeking a peaceful place to unplug? This is a beautiful spot on the St. Croix River. Some days it feels like we have the river to ourselves. This quaint place is away from it all but close enough to Marine on St. Croix to grab a coffee, or some groceries or an ice cream. We leveraged the canoe for fishing and brought our own paddleboards. We will be back!

Perfection

Imagine lying in your bed and looking out at trees shimmering in the morning light and a river rolling by. The only sounds are leaves rustling softly in the wind and birds and squirrels chirping. Imagine having nothing to do all day but sip coffee, paddle a kayak or canoe, read on a screened porch, rustle up a meal. This was our experience at this well-loved, charming cottage. No television, no motor boats, no cars or trucks rushing up the highway. This kind of vacation might not be for everyone, but it was certainly just what the doctor ordered for our family of four. And the family who owns the cottage couldn't be nicer! We also really enjoyed the town of Marine, where we stopped to fill up on WiFi, visited the sweet library, had sublime BLTs at the Landing, and shopped at the little grocery that sells local products. Nearby William O'Brien State Park provided nature trails for our daily hikes (although some of us just sat outside and read all day :) ). A really great find.

Classic cabin

This is a great spot to relax. Quintessential cabin experience. Well supplied and clean. We had everything we needed. Lots to do in the area. The wifi is somewhat spotty, but that helped everyone unplug. Really felt like we were in the woods. Would be great in the fall, too.

Peaceful

What a pleasant, quiet setting beneath pine trees and beside a slow flowing river. Just what our family needed to unplug and relax. The facilities are dated, but we didn't mind stepping back in time. The kitchen had almost everything we needed. Everything about the cottage was as described on the website.

Quiet spot on the St Croix river close to St. Paul

Plenty of windows and two screen porches made our stay in the heat of August very pleasant. Well-stocked with kitchen utensils; and the canoe and kayak, located two lots down from the rental house, were available whenever we wanted to use them. We enjoyed an altogether relaxing week.

Beautiful location, charming cottage, and welcoming owners.

This Saint Croix River cottage throws back to a simpler time of screened sleeping porches and the peaceful calm of watching the river. You can be as active as you want to be with nearby places to hike, swim, canoe, bike, and walk or retreat in place with good books and art projects. Time slowed and cool breezes off the river naturally relaxed and rejuvenated us. We weren’t driven to do anything other than what we felt called to do. The Lewis Family kept us informed of anything that might affect our stay. They are great hosts. I’m scheming to carve out time to return!

A beautiful cottage that will make you want to linger.

Dear Lewis Family, Thank you for sharing your beautiful cottage on the river with us. Our hearts are full of memories and love from the moments we enjoyed in your sweet cottage. We had chilly evenings to make use of the wood stove...enjoyed canoeing on the St. Croix...exploring at the nearby state parks...playing leisurely games of monopoly...and just reveling in uninterrupted time together. Upon arrival at your cottage, both of our children asked if we could keep the cottage. And we will. A piece of this place will always be in our hearts. We hope to return someday..."yet knowing how way leads on to way"...if we never have the chance to visit again, please know, we have made memories in this cottage that we will always carry with us. Much Love.

This property is family-owned. We are a St. Paul family whose branches now extend to both coasts, but the family summer place on the St. Croix brings us together.

Why they chose this property

This property was purchased by our great-grandfather, an avid fly-fisherman who fished the St. Croix, and his wife, as a place for their family to spend summers and, in the days before air-conditioning, escape the heat of the city. They acquired it just as logging operations in the St. Croix River Valley were winding down after nearly a hundred years. They built a house in 1912 – the first on the river – which we, his descendants, still spend time in. Eventually, a second house was built nearby (the one included in this listing) and still later, a third house, now owned by cousins, was added on the other side of the dock area. Over the years, the larger property and houses have been the "glue" that keeps a large extended family in close contact, as we all share a love of the river, its wooded banks and bluffs, and the houses themselves, steeped in family history.

What makes this property unique

Our property is unique for its location smack-dab on a federally-protected Wild & Scenic riverway, full of natural beauty, and at the same time its proximity to and easy accessibility from a major metropolitan area.
