Many attractions are easily reached on foot: the Baths of Caracalla (11 mins), the Aventine Hill (12 mins), the Circus Maximus (13 mins), the Colosseum (20 mins), the Forum (25 mins). Nearby are the lively and characteristic areas of Testaccio and Ostiense that offer a great number of restaurants, pizzerias, taverns, ice cream shops, markets, shops and clubs. At 9 mins from the apartment (through the underground pedestrian passage of Ostiense train station) is Eataly, a 17.000 sq. m. space offering the best in Italian wines and food. Not only can you buy top quality products, but you can also eat in one of the several thematic and gourmet restaurants.
At 200m from the house is a café and a small bakery selling sandwiches, bread, biscuits and all that you need for breakfast. In viale Giotto (5 mins on foot) there is a supermarket which also has fruit, vegetables, meat, fresh bread, meat and a deli. The nearest open-air market is San Saba (5 min on foot) in quaint piazza Bernini, with a few typical stalls selling fruit, vegetables, meat, cold cuts and cheese. There is also a bakery in the square. A 15 min walk will take you to the large covered market of Testaccio in via Galvani, which offers a great variety of fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, bread, pastries, wine, flowers etc., as well as stalls where you can taste traditional roman dishes, open air cafés and shops selling shoes, clothes, accessories, pottery. Finally, on Thursday and Saturday morning in piazza Nicoloso da Recco, a small square 20m from the apartment, you will find a truck selling local fruit and vegetables from the Roman countryside.
Opera and ballet lovers shouldn’t miss the summer season of the Opera of Rome held in the unique setting of the Baths of Caracalla. An interesting museum within walking distance is the Montemartini Centre in via Ostiense: an extraordinary combination of industrial archeology and classical art, where a collection of ancient sculptures is exhibited in a former power plant. Also look out for the exhibitions at the Macro Testaccio, an exhibition space for contemporary art in a former 19th century slaughterhouse.
TRANSPORT
The house is in a central area and very well-connected by public transport:
- the Piramide stop of metro line B is at 400m.
-the closest bus stop is at 100m and several other bus lines stop close by, including the 30 Express that will take you to piazza Navona in 15 mins.
-the number 3 tramline is at 200m and stops in Trastevere, Circo Massimo, Colosseo and San Giovanni.
-the Ostiense train station is at 500m and connects with Fiumicino airport, Fiera di Roma (Rome’s trade fair/congress district, and other railway stations of Rome (Termini, Trastevere, San Pietro); ‘Italo’ high speed trains to various Italian cities (Florence, Venice, Milan, Padua, Bologna and Turin) also stop here.
-Ciampino airport is connected by buses to Termini train station and metro line B to Piramide.
-the Roma–Lido railway is at 400 m and travels to the archaeological site of Ancient Ostia in 26 minutes.
-there are taxi stations in front of the Ostiense and Roma-Lido train stations.
