About this property

Villa and annexe with private pool and beautiful gardens

VILLA DAIMALOS
Villa Daimalos, along with the village house next door, has been lived in by the owners for three generations. This charming house has its own secluded swimming pool and is set on the edge of a small village, looking out across a sheltered valley planted with olives, almonds and vines, and crowned with the ruins of a Moorish castle. The village church has a tower adapted from the oldest minaret in Andalucia and a Mudejar ceiling plus recently discovered, rather worn, 18th century frescoes.

The extensive terrace area is shaded by a vine-covered pergola, and the garden is full of fruit trees and flowers, including yuccas, jacarandas, bourgainvillea, aloes, oranges, lemons, grapefruit and a pomegranate.

Inside, the large (40 sq. m.) sitting/dining room, has an informal family character, with antique furniture, an open fireplace and a library with hundreds of books: these include (normally found on the right-hand side of the shelves) a memoir called The Bottle Brush Tree, written by the owner and describing how he and his wife discovered Daimalos, plus a book of poems called Sketches from the Sierra Tejeda by John Fuller who was a frequent visitor.

This house, sleeping four, can be rented together with the old village house which sleeps six and can share all the facilities of Casa Daimalos. Casa Daimalos can also be rented separately and is an ideal base for walking and exploring, especially in spring and autumn.

THE VILLAGE HOUSE

The 200 year-old village house, next to the village fountain, with entrance planted with bourganvillia and troughs of flowers, has an atmospheric sitting room with many original features, including ancient beams and cane ceilings, an open fireplace and alcoves for storing earthenware wine jars. Steps lead down to an adequately equipped kitchen with gas oven and four hobs, plus fridge/freezer. There is a twin-bed double bedroom leading from the sitting room, and down a couple of steps is another bedroom with double bed and tiled shower room. There is access to a small patio, filled with sweet smelling jasmine. The door from the patio leads on to a small track directly opposite Villa Daimalos. A charmingly primitive staircase leads up to the twin-bedded master bedroom occupying the entire first floor with door to a secluded roof terrace and built-in barbecue. There is a large en-suite bathroom.

Please note that the house is situated on a steep hill; those who are less able may find access difficult.

Beautiful Villa in the Countryside

We loved our stay in Daimalos! Between the two houses, we had plenty of space to spread out with our four children. We all had fun exploring the village, making friends with the neighbors, and reading the books at the house. Both the dishwasher and washing machine worked very well. I really appreciate that with all the laundry and dishes my kids produce. We did struggle with using the internet at the same time while doing homeschool but we worked it out by taking turns. Overall, it was a genuine pleasure to stay here!

Daimalos Vados Holiday

We rented both houses, Daimalos Villa and the Village House, which were on the edge of the extremely quiet and quaint village of Daimalos Vados. The houses have a lovely setting and have all the amenities that we required. There’s a grand living/dining room in the villa with extensive library and also a large pool with beautiful views over the surrounding hills and countryside. The village is also fairly close to the town of Velez Malaga (25 minute drive) which has an excellent selection of restaurants and a pretty old town, while the coast is a 35 minute drive. Overall, a great location, lovely property and excellent communication with the owner.

A Break Away From It All.

We are a group of 2 families, 4 adults and 6 teenagers (14 to 19) who have holidayed together for many years. We really enjoyed our time in Villa Daimalos. We rented both houses but spent most of our time in Villa Daimalos. The village is beautiful, really quiet and away from it all. We felt we had a really genuine experience of Spanish life in this lovely villa and even had a visit from our friendly neighbour Jackie with some suggestions of where to go and what to see. For our household shopping we visited the shopping centre in Velez Malaga and while it is only about 15km it will take 25 mins to get there as the road down the mountain is quite windy but reasonably wide and with spectacular views. The villa also has beautiful views and these can be enjoyed by the lovely pool which is where we spent most of our time. We ventured out to visit Nerja, Caletta and Granada and the road network is really good and easily accessed. All in all a truly relaxing holiday.

¡¡Besos!!

Perfect

Such a soulful home! Adam and Dan were perfect hosts and the house was more beautiful than the photo appear. Had a bit of trouble finding it but once we were there it was heavenly. Thank you for welcoming our family and friends - we hope we’ll be back!

A hilltop hideaway.

Villa Daimalos is a beautifully decorated villa ( plus traditional Spanish village annex house) with a very homely feel. If you like getting away from it all, you will enjoy the remote feel this house offers. Situated in a charming little hillside village, with absolutely no tourists bars/traps you can truly enjoy the very quiet surroundings and great hilltop views. The main villa is set in a lovely sloping garden, probably the greenest in the whole village, where song birds and other local wildlife thrive. The drive up to the mountains is spectacular, but possibly not for the faint hearted as hairpin narrow roads can be hair raising! I would also say elderly people or those with mobility issues would struggle on the extremely steep roads leading to and from the house. We spent a very sunny week at the villa/annex in February, bringing with us a group of painters who very much enjoyed the place. The beds a super comfy and the towels big and fluffy. You will find most things you need in the house such as kitchen equipment as well as outdoor things including plenty of chairs /cushions, parasols, bbq etc. I was initially concerned that the house was smoking friendly, but there wasn’t any smoke smell, except in the down-stairs bathroom. There are lots of trails to explore in the surrounding area and I can recommend taking a walk to the larger village of Arenas, which can be done completely off road on a beautiful track. ( accessed just by the graveyard) Here our group enjoyed an eye wateringly cheep tapas lunch, however if you like us are vegetarian, you might struggle to eat anything but cheese! Good cheese, but just cheese! Just a word of caution reg foods. on day one we picked a load of almonds of the ground beyond the house, but to my horror the following day ( and every day after!) 3 men were out in arms spraying the ground with round-up... So maybe best avoided. But all in all Spain in February is a wonderfully sunny place to be and the villa offered a great venue for all age groups. Adam was always just at the end of an email, if any questions arose. Thanks again Adam and family.

Peace and tranquility in a beautiful villa

I have just spent a very relaxing week staying at this beautiful villa with my young family. It is the opposite of a busy resort but this is a good thing. The garden, pool area and terraces are simply stunning. We shopped for groceries exclusively in the small shops in the nearest town/village, Arenas, where our children were treated like royalty and given little treats depending on the shop type. This is the real Spain. The villa itself is very comfortable with an impressive library. I loved reading the original owner's book about finding, buying and renovating the Villa back in the early 70's. The owner was easily contactable throughout and very helpful. We will definitely return.

Lovely house

We had a very nice stay in the house, everything we needed was there. Beautiful views. The village was very small and quiet. For shopping half an hour by car.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING

We stayed here august 2017 had the best holiday ever! The villa and cottage at the end of the garden gate are fab set in the mountainside of the quaint village of Daimalos both properties are very clean and comfortable the villa has plenty space to relax & bring two families together they have everything you need including fab wifi in the villa & all around the pool . The pool was fantastic & well used by us all plenty of sunbeds & lots of shaded areas also for some time out of the sun as it's hot! Also around the pool is a fab orchard lemons lime oranges etc. The villa & cottage have a very rural & rustic feel to them just what we love! A car is a must staying here although there is a villiage a few minutes down the hill with a fab little pub and a restaurant there you need a car to go out and about for shopping etc lots of shops around at the bottom of the mountain Lidl being our favourite.the locals in this quaint village are very friendly a few English live there always happy to help . The owner is extremely helpful if you do need to contact him at any point before or during your stay One recommendation would be some air conditioning units in the bedrooms no big deal really as you do get used to the heat but they would be ideal on the extremely hot nights Thanks again for letting us share your fantastic home We definitely plan to return to this gorgeous hidden gem 😀

Two beautiful, traditional homes with pool - perfect for our group of friends!

I have recently returned from a week away with my husband and three friends in these really unique holiday homes. There was plenty of room for us all, as we spread out across both houses. The original house is just across the path from the main villa and remains practically unaltered, and very traditionally Spanish. Next door, the owners built a more spacious villa in keeping with the wider village. This house has stunning views over the mountains and a beautiful private pool surrounded by fully grown gardens (including a lemon tree - handy for G&T!). Everyone could keep their own hours because of the separated living arrangements, but we cooked and dined together in the villa house every day, which has a large terrace and outdoor dining table. Sunny days were spent around the pool, catching sun and reading from the very impressive library, and we also visited some lovely nearby villages and a winery, enjoyed spectacular views from the ruined castle on the other side of the valley, and had paella at a beach restaurant on the coast. You can tell this is a family home and not just some holiday villa. It feels just like being invited to stay at a friend’s place in the mountains! Both homes have been lovingly decorated with traditional Spanish antiques, unlike many rental villas. The private garden is really peaceful, being right on the edge of this small Andalusian village. I can’t recommend the place highly enough. I’ve already booked in again for next season. Thank you Adam and Family

About the host

Hosted by Adam Seymour-Davies

Host profile image
Hugh and Georgina bought the village house in 1973, and spent Summer holidays there with their two children Adam and Dan. Twenty years ago they bought a large plot of land next to the house, and built what is now Villa Daimalos with its gardens and secluded pool. Three generations of the family still regularly visit for holidays; the village is very close to our hearts.

Why they chose this property

These properties will appeal to those who want to holiday in a slightly more remote (but convenient) location away from the main tourist areas. The houses are located on the edge of a traditional Andalucian village in a stunning hillside rural spot.

What makes this property unique

These properties are the ideal get away for holiday makers looking for relaxation, tranquil surrounds and time with family and friends. The villa is split over two levels with the master bedroom upstairs enjoying views across the Andalusian hills. The sunken living room has a fireplace and a well stocked library. Most dining takes place outside under the vine pergola. Sheltered by the house and garden, looking out over the valley, the pool is a private oasis for our guests to enjoy.

The charming 200 year old village house is an ideal annexe to the main property.
