About this property

Very Rare Privacy: 25 acres on a spring-fed lake in the Whitefish Chain.

Sitting on 25 acres with 2,500 feet of private shoreline on a point surrounded by water in northern Minnesota's leading vacation destination, this Arts & Crafts lakefront estate home built by the descendants of Frank Lloyd Wright is truly magnificent. Abutting the Crow Wing State Forest, this stunning property on Lake Ossawinnamakee provides a high degree of privacy on one of the nation's cleanest lakes. The main lodge, modeled after the style of renowned architects Greene & Greene, was built in 2003 and won that year’s national award for Best New Residence, as well as being featured in a number of publications. The history of the property dates back to 1917, when the original cottage was constructed for use as a family retreat. It is now used as a guesthouse and can be rented additionally.

The property is rich in both Native American history and sublime natural beauty. Located on the shores of Muskie Bay, the estate is situated on a lake that is seven miles long and considered one of the best bass fishing lakes in the state. It is within a short drive from the country's largest Native American reservations. Reflective of this region’s history, the site was the center of the 1799 war between the Ojibwa and Dakota tribes, and the home is appropriately decorated with many pieces of Native American artifacts from both traditions.

There is also a sauna and two docks. The property is located in close proximity to many activities in the area, including world-class golf courses, water sports, fishing and hunting. Available for additional rates are a concierge, cook, massage therapist, and yoga instructor, all of whom are committed to making your holiday relaxing, effortless and fun. We also rent out the Pontoon for 350$ a day plus gas. Canoes are free to use.

Family stay on the lake.

The 4 bedroom "arts & craft" cottage is a rare and unique lodging. We also enjoyed the 2 bedroom "caretaker's cabin which had the same "charm" as the main cottage. The kitchen is fully stocked with spices, condiments and oils which is a great amenity. Everything was working - the spa, steam shower, wifi, smart tv's, pontoon, fishing poles and the canoes. Abbey, our host, responded immediately to any requests we had and plus a pleasure to get to know. Abbey also arranged a home chef (Chef Kara) to cook a family meal, four courses for 11. It was one of our highlights.

Its Up North at its Finest...

The hosts don’t hover and trust you with their over 100-year family history and a cabin that is crafted to fit into the woods and the surrounding waters without being obtrusive. It has everything: A kitchen to create gourmet meals (well, this time we did have to donate some measuring cups!), cozy bedrooms, and a stocked safe fire pit just to name a few. Really, I am at a loss to write a review suitable to this rental, but a poem, "Up North" by Suzanne Kindler sums up this property:. "It’s the place people go to escape, A place made of cabins, pine trees and lakes But no matter how far you drive, There’s no sign to say “you’ve arrived” So just follow your heart till you find… Your special place that brings peace of mind As you breathe in the air and unwind… Your cares are all left behind It’s no mystery where the northwoods start When you arrive Up North you’ll know In your heart."

Wonderful property

Our second stay at this beautiful location, and it did not disappoint. The property and home are beautiful and we all felt so relaxed. From fishing, to cooking on the grill, to just hanging out together, we could not have asked for a better visit. The bedrooms were very neat and clean The gourmet type kitchen lent itself to constant socializing and wonderful meal preparation! We cannot wait to come back, hopefully for a longer stay! Highly recommended!!

Bachelor Weekend

We booked this property to celebrate the upcoming wedding for one of my best friends. We had a group of 6 guys and this property allowed for comfortable sleeping for all with plenty of space to spread out. Amazing kitchen with more amenities then you can use in four days, outdoor grill, mutiple fire places, and views of the lake from nearly 360 degrees. Close to golf, Crosslake entertainment, and various other tourist areas in the Brainerd Lakes area. Highly satisfied and would recommend to anyone looking for an option for a medium to large size group!!!

Beautiful home on an exquisite spot

We rented this property to host our mother and father's 50th wedding anniversary. Our party included 3 families for a total of 11 people, ranging in age from 16 to 72. The place swallowed us up with no problem and left room for extended family to visit us on the weekend. We had 26 for dinner on Saturday Night. We still didn't run out of space. The kitchen is so well equipped, I think it has two of everything anyone would need. There are dishes, flatware, and glasses galore. The refrigerator swallowed up all our food for the week with room to store beverages as well. There is a commercial grade ice machine which kept up with our demands pretty well -- only on the hottest days did we need a run to town for a bag or two of ice. The dining table that easily accommodated us with some spillover to the porch when extra folks were there. There are plenty of beds, bedrooms, bathrooms, towels, blankets, books to read, and games to play. And this is BEFORE going outdoors. The place is large enough that if you need to get away from the commotion, you can, but small enough that you are never far from the fun. Outside you will find so many options of things to do you will never run out of options. There are docks on each side of the peninsula, one accommodating the pontoon and ski boat, the other just out over the water on the other side. I brought my fishing boat along and moored it here for easy access. Was convenient to plug my battery charger in the little boathouse that houses a sauna. There are hiking trails, a wide open space for lawn games, landscaping that is well maintained and beautiful. There are canoes and paddles available for your enjoyment, and the owner's son took several members of our party on a 3 hour canoe trip which they thoroughly enjoyed! Speaking of that, the hosts (Owner's son and family) were incredible and ensured we had everything we needed, without being in the way or hovering. They were there when and if they were needed, and their entire focus was on making us feel welcome and accommodated. They were truly a blessing to our stay and became good friends by the end of the week. They also did a fantastic job with the weather, which was PERFECT the whole week of our stay. In summary, I really can't say enough about this property. It is a high quality place, well worth the money paid. It is ideal for family get togethers and relaxing. We have discussed going back, it's that good!

Loved this property!

My favorite moment from our recent stay was sitting on a paddleboard in the middle of the bay, watching my kids play in the vast open space between the main house and the original cabin. This property was built for relaxation. And creating memories. Our party included a six-year-old, an eight-year-old, a ten-year-old, four forty-somethings and a pair of octogenarians. Every single person found a place to relax or play. If the kids weren't kayaking, they were fishing off the dock. If they weren't fishing, they were playing badminton in the grass. The adults lounged on the docks, in the hammock, by the multiple fire pits. I hesitate to call it a cabin, as it feels more like a lodge. The structure itself is marvelous. I'm searching my mind for a single room without an expansive water view. Nope, they all look out onto the lake. Whoever designed it was thoughtful, creating persistent and generous water views in a structure that feels modern in flow and yet warm in personality. The rooms are large, the closet space ample. The kitchen is designed for socializing. Don't get me started on the dining room. We ate there every evening while we talked and gazed out at the lake. The house features an impressive library and art collection, none of it hidden away, so we felt more like a good friend had given us the keys to their place, and we were sharing their space. We told the kids to look and, if they must touch, to do so lightly. I think they were charmed by the opportunity to experience the art and were thus extra careful. Kids. They surprise you. The caretaker, Lisa, was friendly and attentive, as was the owner, John. Both are very easy to talk to. I can't think of a single thing that we needed that was not on the premises, in ample supply. The fireplace is lovely, as is the sauna. We could have stayed another week. Time flew by. We'll be back.

Fabulous cabin and setting. The cabin is as described. We had a dinner party for 16 and the place easily handled the group and our friends raved about the setting and decor. Thanks John for a memorable time. Kevin R

The property was exactly as advertised - beautiful and very comfortable. The house is really something with great spaces and tremendous history. Thanks to John as well as Stacy Blue at Lake State Concierge and Lisa Lindstrom. And a special thanks to PJ Severson who made a fantastic meal for a special day. We would (will) return any time.

Our family vacation “Christmas In July”

My Christmas gift each year to my family is a vacation in July, to spend quality time together while having fun experiences to cherish. I chose this place mainly because of the verse on the fireplace mantle “To everything there is a season”. It is a beautiful, well maintained property, with plenty of room for our family of 10. We enjoyed a fishing excursion and a private chef to prepare our fish and meal. The rest of our time there was spent on the property enjoying the pontoon boat, canoeing, water skiing, tubing (which we purchased while there) and swimming. We brought steaks, etc, to cook in the grill, enjoying a sit down meal together at the large dining table for 10. Each night we sat around the campfire, enjoying s’mores, and quiet reflection. Our time had to be cut short because of my mothers failing health, but it was a gift of a lifetime to my family. I just feel blessed for the love we share and thankful for Gods guidance always.

Amazing Family Getaway!

The minute we walked in the front door we felt like we were home. Amazingly beautiful home with all the amenities you could ever need located on a very private peninsula. Everyone was sad to leave and can’t wait to come back next summer, hands down best lake property I’ve seen in all of my travels!

A perfect place to get away as a family, to reconnect

We had a group of 8 adults & 9 kids/young adults all together for a week. This was the perfect place to do that = plenty of space for everyone, two docks, a sauna and a jacuzzi - the kitchen was fabulous, every type of cooking item possible. And grocery and other stores not that far away. We brought some of our own games etc. but there were some there as well. A great time was had by all.

Incredible property

Our family of 10 had a spectacular week at this wonderful family home. It was such a beautiful property and the house and cottage were beautifully outfitted. The property is on a point so you have lake views from almost every room. The attention to detail is amazing. We spent hours on the lake, waterskiing and fishing and relaxing and enjoyed the large lawn for frisbee games. The owner , John, was extremely helpful and accommodating. We can’t wait to come again next year! It is truly a one of a kind property. Janine from San Francisco, CA

Peaceful retreat

We had the pleasure of spending five days at this beautiful home for a recent family vacation. We have four children age 16-24 and they all had a terrific time. The main house is immaculate and stocked with all the conveniences that make the stay here easy and stress free. There are beautiful views of the lake from every angle, a boat house with sauna which we enjoyed on several occasions, fishing gear and poles, two very fast jet skis that seat two each, a powerful pontoon boat, and a wake board boat that Ryan, the caretaker, would pilot for us all to enjoy wake/surf boarding. There is a large yard that accommodates yard games, as well as a large gas grill and outside fire pit. As a note, the caretaker lives on site, which was not an issue for us. He was available to drive the boat and made sure the jet skis were filled with gas. It made the stay so much easier and stress free! Our family agreed that this was one of the best family trips the we have had!

The Ultimate Family Retreat

Our entire family spent five amazing days at this place to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary, and we did not want to leave. One would have to write a book to adequately describe all of its beautiful features. The design of the house, the attention to detail, and the high quality construction are the work of a true artist. The antiques and Native American treasures used as decor are comparable to many museum displays. But that is only part of the appeal. The location is peaceful, relaxing, private and absolutely gorgeous. For our family, the best part was the opportunity to enjoy fishing and water sports with all the included equipment. The owner and staff have thought of absolutely everything needed for a memorable experience. The price seems high at first, but actually turns out to be a bargain when all the extras are factored in. One of our grandsons said the place rivaled Orlando! We also appreciated the efforts of John, the owner, and the caretakers, Bella and Boy, in making us feel welcome. One evening we all ate together at the nearby Norway Ridge Restaurant, which was recommended by Bella. We were very pleased with the food and service there as well. This magnificent estate and its staff are worthy of our highest recommendation!

A Magnificent Gem of the Highest Quality

This beautiful home is located on the point with Muskie bay on one side and Lake Ossawinnamakee on the other. Outstanding lake views abound in all directions. The home belongs in a magazine and in fact has made at least three publications. The home takes the best of the old great lodges, adds modern day luxuries and comforts and then celebrates Native American history with artifacts befitting a museum. The homeowner and the house staff haven't missed a detail in providing the ultimate in vacation experiences. This is truly one of the best. As a large extended family we all had hearts of gratitude for our wonderful week. We hope to return soon :) Thank you John, Bela and Boy for being such wonderful hosts. Simply outstanding :)

The perfect place to unwind at the lake. Exceptional value.

We selected this property for a small family reunion to celebrate my parents' 50th anniversary. A bit of a gamble given we had people in age from 10 to 78 years old. $1,250 a night based on 6 photos on the internet? What would we really find? People came from great distances. Money was spent; anxieties were present. Most of us were raised in Minnesota, so our expectations for a week at a lake were high. To say that the entire family thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Wright retreat would be a great understatement. It was spectacular. It proved to be the perfect location to gather, relax, share memories and make new ones. The property is appealing for its thoughtful and spacious architecture, landscaping, and amenities. There were comfortable chairs in gorgeous shady spaces for some, and jet skis and a (very luxurious) pontoon boat for others. Parents took kids fishing. Grandfathers took grandkids kayaking (with our own kayaks). Days melted by. The whole property works together to relax, bring people into community, and enjoy each others' company. I have a lot of respect for the owner who chose not to design an another cliche a-frame "lake at the cabin." The Arts & Crafts-stype home is spectacular. Its furnishings and treasures inside reflect a respect for history and native american artistry and craftsmanship. The property sits on a quiet point with water on three sides with relaxing views in all directions, along with the privacy we were hoping for. All of this was complemented by two skilled, kind and generous property managers that attended to the smallest of details. They could not have made our stay more comfortable. Between them and Mocha, the on-site dog (soon the most beloved "new"member of the family) we felt like we had family around. In the end: My parent's were ecstatic. The kids were thrilled. Everyone was pleased. Lots of pictures capture the love of family and a celebration of my parents' 50 years. The stage that made this possible was this unique property. This rental was an exceptional value: for the price of a rental night you get the home, large piece of land, privacy and quiet, shady trees, the boats, skis, fishing equipment, property managers. As another reviewer said it well, "You get what you pay for." Our family is already planning our return visit next summer.

Wright Retreat

The inviting custom architecture; interior design highlighting local native American history; zen native landscape architecture; the variety of watercraft available (property manager is required to operate the high-performance ski boat); location on a quiet, high water quality lake; family history of the property; and services available by on-site property managers made this an especially interesting and appealing property. We appreciated details included in the cost, like spraying the site for mosquitoes, daily housekeeping service, and the efforts of the managers and owner to ensure that our visit was pleasant. Rental included main house (4 bd) only. Great place for those who appreciate architectural design, water sports, historical context, personalized services availability, and quiet natural surroundings. Expensive, but you get what you pay for.
