We’ve stayed at this lovely farmhouse on two memorable occasions - firstly, a summer break in June 2009, secondly in February 2010, to celebrate our wedding anniversary and for winter walks, and will most likely spend a few days there this year. The farmhouse really is a hidden gem.
Set in a tranquil location, it has wonderful views of the Luberon Mountains across the valley, yet is just a few minutes drive to the small towns of Saignon and Apt, with lots of shops, restaurants, and a bustling market. Avignon airport is less than an hour’s drive - Marseilles and Nimes airports, under two hours.
The farmhouse is set in a lovely large garden with lots of trees to sit under for shade, to either quietly read a book, or to keep an eye on children playing in and around the heated pool. The spacious accommodation is very well appointed, tastefully furnished, and well managed.
In the unlikely event of any difficulties, the owner - who is French and speaks excellent English - is just at the end of the phone. In the winter we were glad of the central heating, and to be able to settle down in front of the log fire in the large but cosy lounge.
The ‘two house’ concept works well, and meets the needs of groups or families who may wish to go to bed and rise at different times. The kitchen/diner and the lounge are spacious, so even quite large groups won’t be bumping into each other!
The location is an ideal base for visiting all the quaint and picturesque sights for which Provence is so famous - Rousillon, Bonnieux, Gordes, Lourmarin, L’Isle Sur la-Sorgue and so on. Slightly further afield, but within easy distance, are Avignon, St-Remy-de-Provence, Arles, and Aix en Provence. We especially like the large market at Forcalquier on Mondays - a delightful drive along the quiet tree-lined N100, and we enjoyed our summer and winter walks in the picturesque Provencal ‘Colorado’, with its astonishing colourful ochre quarries. In summertime, the lavender fields are a sight to behold.
In short, Le Mas des Anges has something for everyone!
