Peaceful setting 10 minutes to New Braunfels, San Marcos or Seguin
Opa's Haus is a 4 bedroom, 2 bath home. Three bedrooms downstairs each have a queen bed. Upstairs is one large bedroom with 4 twin beds. So the house can easily sleep 10 people. The house was originally built in 1860 by German immigrants who used 'fachwerk' (half timber) construction with which they were familiar in Germany. Some of these original walls have been exposed to show the structural beams held together with hand-whittled pegs instead of nails. Between the beams you can also see the handmade bricks. Even though built before Abraham Lincoln was President, the house now has all the modern conveniences of central heat and air conditioning and kitchen appliances. In the living room is a large TV with satellite service. There is also a large outdoor charcoal grill. The spacious front porch is the perfect place to relax after a day of activities - a good place to reconnect with family and friends. If your group is larger than 10 we also have 3 other houses on the property which could accommodate a family reunion. The location is the perfect combination of peaceful country living and access to attractions in New Braunfels, Seguin or San Marcos. All 3 towns are just 10 minutes from Opa's Haus.

Opa's house and cabin are remarkable architecture in a beautiful farm like setting. Close to wedding venues Harper Hill Ranch and Geronimo Oaks. Super convenient for both. Had everything we needed and owners were awesome! super res
what a wonderful little getaway! bride, bridesmaids and bride's mother stayed and we loved it. plenty of space, very comfy and homey and a nice little place to be together. thank you for everything!
Great little place out of the city. We came for the weekend to float the river. It was close to 3 different rivers with plenty of options near by to rent tubes. Qlso close enough to town to run and get food as needed.

Nice, quiet stay
Overall, it was a great stay in the country. Be ready for scorpions and other little critters. There is an additional charge per day after 2 guests that we didn't realize at booking. Fun, little place to stay with lots of history.
This was a great place to stay it was very comfortable and nice. The property manager was very helpful after we locked ourself out. My only complaint was there were a decent amount of scorpions we had to deal with.
This house was so cute and quaint! From the outside, it looks small but when you get in, it’s the perfect size! A/C is wonderful haha! Less than 10 minutes from Geronimo wedding venue! It was a very nice stay!
The cabin was so cute and so peaceful. The bedrooms were clean and the owners let us check in early since my family flew in from N Carolina. It was a nice weekend getaway for the wedding!
Family wedding at Geronimo Oaks made this location perfect for our family as it is five minutes away and we were able to let everyone stay at the reception as long or as short a time as they wanted! The house had everything we needed for the eight adults that stayed and we loved the beautiful sunrise views and historical charm of the place!
Lovely restored house. Great idea to share the history. Quiet area. Was the perfect respite between wedding events.

About the host
Hosted by Sherman and Joy Schlichting
We are life-long residents of this area. Joy was raised on this family farm and still has relatives nearby. We are both descended from the German immigrants who came to this area in the mid 1800's. We have always felt called to help restore architectural treasures of the past. Our two sons share our passion and helped to save this home.
Why they chose this property
This house sat on property that was slated for future development and likely would have been destroyed. In 2010 we purchased the house and moved it to the family farm where we have 3 other vacation rentals. After 4 years of hard work the restoration was completed and the house was ready for guests. We have tried to preserve much of the original craftsmanship and charm. The house still has all the original handmade doors and windows. Reclaimed pine floors are throughout the house. The unique wood trim is a good example of the artistic abilities and the attention to detail of German artisans of the period. When you stay in this house you will have a real appreciation for the work that had to be done to build a home in this area in 1860.
What makes this property unique
When we first saw this house it was in an advanced state of disrepair. But even in this condition we could see the potential. The house had been untouched since about 1950. There was no electricity or plumbing in the house. But this afforded us the chance to 'start from scratch' to install modern amenities. All the original doors, windows, and pine flooring have been restored. We reconstructed the porch to give guests a good place to relax and visit. We have tried to furnish the house with 'old things', but at same time make it comfortable and useable - not like a museum.
