Unbelievable, lucky find

We stayed in the front unit on the second floor, and it was fabulous for us. We will stay here again in a heartbeat if it's available. The unit was well-stocked, the bed was very comfortable, and the location quiet and incredibly convenient for everything we wanted to do. We appreciated the enclosed garage space. We enjoyed being able to walk safely to everywhere, including the French Quarter. The stairs are steep, though, so this place is not for anyone who might need an elevator.

New Orleans Getaway

Wanted to head to New Orleans and wanted to visit the National WWII Museum, so looked in the area. This place could not have been more perfect! We were 1 1/2 blocks from the museum. We drove and secure parking was included- definitely big plus! The area is quiet, artistic and relaxing. Very different from Bourbon Street area which we loved when we were younger. The apartment was great! Definitely vintage, and that was the added charm. Very high ceilings, pocket doors, balcony, great King size bed and a very French/ New Orleans vibe. The owner and his help were very responsive when I had a question. Just an fyi, those very high ceilings mean a large staircase since we were on 2nd floor, but we worked it all out and got some exercise. Location was great for walking to the museum, but also a great rooftop happy hour at Rosie's on the Roof at The Higgins Hotel. Secure parking allowed us to drive to different areas and enjoy restaurants in the Garden District and on Lake Ponchatrain. Even my husband commented that this was one of the coolest places we've stayed. We will be back the next time we need that New Orleans getaway! vvibe.apartment

Ideal NOLA apartment

The property is as listed on the web site, it is big and spacious and was ideal for my wife and I for 5 nights for our first visit to NOLA. The apartment having a parking space available was a real bonus, it was only a short Uber ride from most places we wanted to visit and the fantastic air con is invaluable in the heat of NOLA

Excellent response to a problem

A newly moved thermostat was not working and the owner worked tirelessly to get it fixed for us as our dog was staying in the apartment all day. He even offered us another apartment for a night. Once fixed, the apartment was stellar. The historic building and location were ideal; a half block from Peche, a highly rated restaurant, and just several blocks from our new favorite Sea Worthy-a genuine oyster bar. The WW2 museum is only steps away. I cannot recommend this apartment enough.

Comfortable flat in walking distance to French Quarter

Twenty/twenty-five minutes will take you into the heart of the French Quarter. Frankly, with the food in NOLA, you will need the exercise to work off the excess! In a good way. The flat had everything we needed and I loved the super comfortable bed. There is a fantastic supermarket a short walk away and several good restaurants around the corner as well. Being away from the French Quarter is a great idea as it can be a bit chaotic. The flat is a little oasis of peace in a busy city.

Spacious and Lovely; Walking Distance to Everything

We really enjoyed this apartment which is much bigger and more luxurious than a hotel room would have been. The place was easy to find, it allowed me to program my own door code, and the King-sized bed was sublime (best mattress EVER). We literally walked all over town, quite easily, from this place. It's also very close to restaurants (we recommend Cochon), and the World War II museum. It's relatively quiet (compared to elsewhere around NOLA) so it's a perfect place to go back to at the end of the day. :) We enjoyed our interactions with the hosts, and the place was immaculate. It was a wonderful stay and we would highly recommend for a couple or a small family. Kitchen is pretty well stocked. Bathroom is small but fine.

Loved this incredible historic property perfectly situated in the warehouse district. The reserved parking was a very nice bonus. The rooms had high ceilings and remained comfortably cool and quiet. A nice small place in a good area, about 8 blocks from the French Quarter

We enjoyed our stay here, about one block from the mardis gras parades and walking distance to the French quarter. It is in an older building, with original floors and hardwood, but everything worked well and when one thing didn't work they were in immediately to fix it.

We got engaged!

Loved the space, wish we could have opened the front windows for breeze, understand it might not be safe but it was beautiful out. Glassware would be nice instead of plastic cups Guy downstairs was not cool yelling about the noise that an old house makes.

Great location; good indoor-outdoor space; no better place with a pet

We were very happy with our rental. The French doors to the back balcony coupled with the high ceilings transform it to a welcoming indoor-outdoor space. Comfortable bed; great oversized couch and dining area. Could use a few more cooking supplies for a long stay, but adequate for a week. Two block walking distance to coffee, restaurants, galleries, spin studio. Recommend: Ogden Museum, Contemporary Art, WWII Museum. Beyond restaurants on all the lists, in walking distance recommend Carmo, Sofia, Little Beet, Seaworthy. Tour Cycle is a nice spin studio a block away.

Nice apartment, very convenient location.

The apartment was clean, though an older building, not surprisingly, and spacious for a one bedroom. Had everything there we needed, including a small styrofoam cooler that we used when we were out birding for couple of days. Easy access to the building and apartment (as long as you read your email carefully ;-) It was great to have an off street parking spot. Thanks for a great visit!

Truly enjoyed the historic quality of the house. Wonderful place to relax after a day of seeing NOLA

This was my first experience with using Home Away. The house truly lives up to its description and I was not disappointed. A little noise , if there are people above you, but this was not a large problem, once you take into consideration the age of the home. Everything was clean and well provided. The property is very conveniently located, so that we could walk to local restaurants and bars, and accessing streetcars or buses was easy. Truly enjoyed the back porch, but was a little disappointed that we could not access the front balcony. I found that for a 2 people the "apartment" was a perfect size. I am sure that if we would have had anyone else with us, the pullout would have worked well. Plenty of room to stretch out and relax. I hope that anyone who decides to stay at this location enjoys the it as much as we did. Thanks Again - Kim & Peyton B.

Great location, beautiful space

The apartment is really spacious and has everything you need to stay in NOLA. Plus, the location is ideal for walking everywhere from the hip warehouse district, art district or even to the French Quarter. We did Uber to the French Quarter on occasion when we were tired. There is also an amazing grocery store a few blocks away to stock up on supplies. The only complaint is the noise from upstairs tenants. Maybe it’s the design of the building, or perhaps we had really loud neighbors, but you can hear every footstep like it’s a stomp and at 3am-5am it’s quite annoying.

Quirky, and fun area. So many things to do within walking distance. The only thing I would change is put people with small children on lower floor. Being an old building did not sound pleasant with child running back a forth all day.will stay agian

Why they chose this property

The elegant townhouse at 838 Camp Street was designed by James Harrison Dakin (1806-1852), an influential architect in New Orleans who also designed the landmark St. Patrick’s Cathedral down the street. The land was first owned by Gasquet, Parish & Co., a commission merchant company largely responsible for the initial development of the American Sector. Construction on this townhouse, originally one of nine sister “rowhouses,” began in the early 1840s.

The first known inhabitant of the townhouse was Walter Cox, a cotton merchant and owner of the cotton firm W. Cox & Co. established in 1858. It appears that the Civil War resulted in Cox’s firm going bankrupt, as his home was sold in a sheriff’s auction in 1867. The house was purchased by attorney Alfred J. Philips, partner in the esteemed New Orleans firm of Roselins & Philips. Sometime during the 1870s, ownership of the property transferred from Philips to his brother-in-law, influential attorney John Blackstone Cotton from Georgia, who married Alfred’s younger sister Sophia in 1852. Blackstone served as a New Orleans City Attorney in 1850, as a District Judge (1853-1857) and as Superintendent of Elections (1857-1858). During the Civil War, Cotton served as a Confederate Army Officer from 1861 until he fell ill in the field in 1862.

Margaret Robinson Barnett (1887–1977) purchased the property in May of 1921. Margaret owned and operated “Dixie Stove Works” out of what is now the property’s commercial space at 840 Camp. The company boasted itself as “the South’s largest manufacturer of stove parts.” Margaret and her husband also housed “Roomers” in the properties residential units beginning in 1930. These renters hailed from such varied places as Germany, New York, Louisiana, Minnesota, and South Dakota. The residence had become primarily commercial in the latter half of the 20th century, with Dixie Stove Works as its last commercial occupant.
