Historic Granite Home on the Arkansas River.

Granite Haven is your perfect home away from home, whether you are looking for a peaceful get-a-way or seeking adventure and recreation. We are surrounded by BLM and National Forest which offer peace and solitude, or just sit on the deck and watch the wildlife. On the other end of the spectrum, rafting, hiking, biking, skiing and boarding (Copper Mountain is a 45 minute drive, Monarch is 45 minutes away, and Vail is 1 hour, and Ski Cooper is 30 minutes), and fishing are all easily accessible. In the summer, a beautiful drive over Independence Pass (which is closed in the winter) will get you to Aspen in 1 hour. This is a turn of the century miner's home with approximately 1000 sf., two bedrooms and 1-1/2 baths. Sleeps six. The house has new hardwood floors and an updated kitchen and bathroom complete with washer and dryer in the big mud room entry. Unique tin ceilings are still intact in the original part of the house along with original wood flooring in the bedrooms. The house sits in the side of the hill overlooking the historic Granite townsite and the Arkansas River. Spectacular views of the Sawatch Range. Book seven or more nights and get a 10% discount.

We loved this house!

We wanted a romantic getaway, and that's exactly what we got. It was quiet, not too remote and the many amazing bird feeders and the birds they attracted were so entertaining!

Birds, and flowers, and peace

We were very happy here! The home is clean and comfortable with everything we needed, and Kim and Kent are the nicest warm and kind hosts. We chose the location for close access to hikes in the Twin Lakes, Buena Vista, and Leadville areas, and then were happy to also learn about several outstanding walks we could take from Granite without ever getting in the car. Bird watching and the flower gardens were bonus!

Truly a Haven

This is the third ski trip we’ve spent at Kim & Kent’s lovely Granite Haven. It is spacious, yet cozy with the gas fireplace that is so inviting. The kitchen is fully equipped and the entire home is so clean and well cared for. The home is full of beautiful light throughout the day, and the windows offer amazing views of the mountains. If you are interested in birds, don’t miss the chance to stay at Granite Haven and enjoy so many Western US species as they come to the feeders. A highlight of our stays is always talking with Kim and sharing her knowledge and love of the area. We’re already planning our next return!

Loved the bird feeders.

Very unique home and a great place to chill out. Loved watching the birds every morning at the feeders. Also the chipmunks were entertaining. The Arkansas river is within walking distance if you want to try some trout fishing. Had a small group of bighorn sheep behind the house one morning. Never could get the tv working but that gave us more time to read. Excellent location for day trips to Aspen, Leadville or Buena Vista.

Our second perfect stay

So very glad we could return to Granite Haven againthis spring break! Kim and Kent’s home is the perfect mountain getaway: quiet, cozy, sun-filled, with just the right amenities. We love the gas fireplace, spacious living room and dining room areas for sharing family time, and well-equipped kitchen for meals in. Views are stunning and if you are a birdwatcher or star gazer, this is the place for you. We love our hosts, Kim & Kent - thank you for the warm welcome back!

We will absolutely be back!

Kim and Kent are amazing hosts. They left a beautiful it flower arrangement of local flowers in the kitchen. The cabin was spotless, cozy, homey, and the kitchen had all our cooking needs. Unfortunately our stay was cut short because of a emergency at home but we will definitely be back and cannot wait to spend more time is this prefect Colorado getaway :) The Genova Family

Great House in the Historic town of Granite Colorado

When we are in the area we would DEFINITELY want to stay in this charming house again. It was perfect. We wanted to be away from the noise of staying in a hotel. We loved all the wildlife. A herd of Rocky Mountain Big Horn sheep walked up the driveway one morning. Amazing!

5-Stars All The Way!!

Kent & Kim's Granite house was EXACTLY what we wanted, needed and got... A historic older home on the Arkansas River, in the sleepy old High Colorado mining town of Granite. A perfect base of operations for our own gold prospecting adventures on the Arkansas River, downriver on some claims. Comfy, quiet, well outfitted with most everything you'd every need. You felt as IF you owned the town and the river out your West windows... Lots of native wildlife to view. such as Big Horn Sheep on the hill above, Mule Deer at the flowerbeds in the mornings and so many high mountain birds at the feeders on the patio and out the kitchen window. Loved the propane fireplace and outside grill for cooking. Kent & Kim are super nice hosts. Lots of history in and with this 1900s era house. Can't wait to return for another getaway soon. Thanks Kent & Kim!!!

Granite Haven is Heaven

There aren’t enough superlatives for this most special home. We have stayed in many great VRBOs over the years and this one is the top of the list. Beginning with great communication & an easy check-in to a beautiful & cozy interior with such thoughtful touches, Kent & Kim have created the loveliest place imaginable. As a birder, I was awestruck by the amazing array of birds at the feeders - five new birds for my life list! Views of the mountains and the night sky are spectacular. We will definitely be back!

Wonderful Place

My girlfriend and I were looking for somewhere in the area to stay as a home base for outdoor activity and this place was perfect. There's so much to do nearby. The house was clean, had a full kitchen and gas grill that we used to make burgers while getting a fire started. Great place to unwind after a day of outdoors activity and they have dvd's/streaming on their t.v. if you want to just hang out inside at night. They also have many board games and books in case you want to relax indoors. The decor was cute and the views were beautiful right from the window. They keep the bird feeders stocked and watching them is pretty entertaining. The hosts were wonderful and contacting them was easy. Would recommend 10/10. Next time I'm in the area I'm rebooting. :)

About the host

Hosted by Kent & Kim Naegele

Host profile image
Kim is 5th generation Granite. Her great-great-grandfather was a freighter and homesteaded the Clear Creek Ranch just south of Granite. So it was quite natural for us to move back to Granite. Kent is a carpenter and builds everything from cabinets and furniture to new custom homes. Kim is a science teacher at the Buena Vista High School.

Why they chose this property

The town of Granite has a rich history in mining and railroads. The infamous shooting of Judge Dwyer during the Lake County Wars transpired in Granite. In 1876, the year of Colorado statehood, Granite was the county seat. After loosing this distinction to Buena Vista, residents of Granite were unwilling to relinquish the county records to Buena Vista. Residents of Buena Vista then resorted to a clandestine, middle of the night, gunpoint, robbery of the records. Before the mining boom in Leadville, Granite was the hot spot for gold mining, and remnants of these historic mines are all around Granite. Our family history is here, and our roots run deep in Granite. The house was passed down through the family, and we now have the privilege of living in Granite.

What makes this property unique

Wildlife--Here in Granite we have our own resident big horn sheep herd. The ewes hang out in town summer, fall, and winter. During the spring they go south for lambing and then bring their lambs back to town in the late summer. In the fall the rams join the ewes and enjoy running around the front yard of the house eating the flowers. For bird enthusiasts, Granite attracts rare rosy finches in the winter and hundreds of hummingbirds, broadtail, rufus, and calliope, in the summer. A pair of osprey has a nest just ¼ mile from Granite as well. Granite Haven has feeders right outside the windows so you can enjoy these feathered friends close up.
Fishing and Hunting--The gold medal Arkansas River is a stone's throw from the house to catch fat brown trout. For those who prefer delicious brook trout, Low Pass Creek, is ½ mile north of Granite. The native cutthroat trout are also available for those who are more adventurous and willing to hike a few miles to the high lakes up above timberline. Clear Creek Reservoir and Twin Lakes are both less than ten minutes away. Granite is surrounded by BLM and national forest for those interested in hunting elk, deer, and antelope.
Hiking and Biking--Chaffee County boasts the highest number of 14ers than any other county in Colorado. Granite is located on the northern edge of Chaffee County, so Elbert, Massive, La Plata, and Sherman are all close trailheads as well. For those who prefer a nice walk in the woods, any direction from Granite offers spectacular views and the sound of running water. Miles and miles of mountain bike trails, including the Colorado Trail, are easily accessible from the yellow house. Ski Cooper is a 30 minute drive from Granite. Copper Mountain and Monarch are only 45 minutes away. Three rafting companies are within 5 minutes of Granite and offer the adventure of Pine Creek, Numbers, and Brown's Canyon sections of the Arkansas River.
