It's always worrying to be one of the first guests at a newly-opened holiday home. At the time of our visit, there were no reviews of Casa Avena – we had only the beautiful pictures as testimony – but we need not have worried.
The owner, Giulia, could not have been nicer, and provided us with simple, clear directions for the 20 minute drive from the airport. Our concerns disappeared as soon as we arrived. The view alone is spectacular: though only a few minutes from the E45 autostrada (for Rome, Cortona, Gubbio, Assisi, etc.), there is no sight or sound of this from the house. Instead, you are surrounded by beautiful green Italian countryside.
Casa Avena itself is wonderful: traditional and attractive to the exterior; modern and cosy once inside. With one large master bedroom and a single loft bedroom, the house was perfectly sized for me and my wife and son. Downstairs, the living quarters are large, open, comfortable and clean. Warm days we spent sunning on the private patio (if you have children, the garden beside it is big enough to kick a football around), and cool nights relaxing inside by the fire (there's Sky TV and Wi-Fi).
The kitchen is fully-stocked with everything you might need, including a large fridge-freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. As sad as it sounds, the latter was really useful – it's so nice to return home with all your clothes clean!
Montone, the nearest town, is tranquil and medieval, and boasts stunning views and several nice restaurants. For our last night, Giulia recommended eating at Erba Luna, located in the town's converted horse stables, where my wife and I had the best meal we've had in a long time.
All in all, a fantastic holiday, and a place where I look forward to returning. Grazie, Giulia – see you again soon!
