About this property

Xmas offer, 5* review & views, nr Ullswater

When you stay with us we take extra care for you to relax and enjoy your break away from home, so we completely clean the barn ourselves between bookings. Living next door we’re also on hand with local knowledge about the area and to answer any questions. Lowside barn sleeps a maximum of 5 adults plus 1 child.
We’re in an idyllic quiet conservation area with a lawned garden and many scenic walks from the house. A mile away in Askham there’s a well stocked village shop and great cosy pub.

We offer a warm welcome to our well equipped barn conversion next to our home, a former farmhouse built in 1687 in the picturesque conservation village of Helton. Helton is situated in the quiet NE corner of the Lake District National Park, half way between Ullswater (5miles) and Haweswater (6miles), within easy access of all the Park's mountains, lakes and fells, with a wide variety of walks and outdoor activities, some great village pubs, cafes and restaurants close by. It really is a home away from home at affordable prices for couples, families or groups of friends, with all you need to create a really memorable Lakeland holiday!

We pride ourselves in our attention to every detail to make your stay as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Not only do we clean the property ourselves to maintain a consistently high standard of presentation, we also re-wash all the cutlery, glassware and cups through the dishwasher between bookings.

We have equipped and decorated the barn for you to relax in an atmosphere of calm tranquility, in light airy rooms. We have combined antique and contemporary furniture and paintings in a traditional Lakeland country style. Upstairs, you'll love the stylish and comfortable bedrooms: the master bedroom has a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom; the pretty double room has its own basin and wonderful views across the garden and valley beyond; and the small third bedroom with bunk beds and skylight, best suited for children and teenagers, or one adult. After a day out amongst the fells, you'll look forward to a wonderful night's sleep on high quality mattresses, with soft goose down duvets and pillows, Egyptian cotton bedding and towels. Downstairs is the second bathroom with walk-in shower, toilet and basin.

The cosy beamed living room has views over the garden, fields beyond and across the Lowther valley. It has a log burner, comfy sofas and dining area, with flat screen TV, DVD, CD player, wi-fi, well stocked bookcase and games. The well-equipped kitchen has a dishwasher, washer dryer, fridge freezer, electric cooker and microwave, and a range of cooking/roasting/baking equipment.

In summer you'll love relaxing with a barbecue and glass of wine in our garden, enjoying the expansive view across the valley towards Knipe Scar. In winter, what better way to end your day than to snuggle up in front of the glowing log burner for a cosy candlelit night in, after a day out exploring all that the Lake District has to offer? Or treat yourselves to dining out in one of our local award-winning pubs or restaurants. The cosy Punchbowl Inn, The Queen's Head and The Michelin-starred Allium restaurant at Askham Hall are only a mile away in the next village! An excellent alternative is the George & Dragon gastro-pub in Clifton, less than 10mins drive.

Holiday get away

Our family stayed at this beautiful spot on our way from Scotland to England during a recent trip from our home in the US. It was the perfect stopping point and such a cozy place to be. Claire was so helpful and accommodating, even giving us milk upon arrival as it was late by the time we got there. We would love to visit again!

Relaxing visit

This cottage is in an incredible location and worked well for us with younger aged children. We could go on easy walks directly from the house to a river or up high on the fell. There was lots to see and visit by car in the area. Would recommend. The cottage is peaceful and cosy with comfy beds and a large garden.

Lowside is an lovely bolthole in an incredible location. The cottage was everything we hoped for and more. We lucked out with the weather so were able to take advantage of the garden too which was a real treat. The barn is a fantastic home away. It is the most comfortable and lovely lodge for a vacation.

We spent lovely 3 nights in Lowside Barn, and wish we could stay longer. It has everything we needed, and more. It is beautifully designed, equipped and decorated. Clair and Chris are the nicest hosts, and they welcomed us with a delicious home baked cake and gave us many useful advice. The location is great for touring the Lakes in general, and there are many local tracks and attractions nearby. The kids loved it too, and didn't want to leave... We would love to be back :-) Thank you Claire and Chriss 🌸

Quiet location near Ullswater

Had a lovely long weekend mixing walks in the hills with fun on the lake and family nights in. Well equipped cottage, welcoming host, with plenty of info available about walks and things to do in this beautiful part of the northern Lakes. (We even managed to adapt the baby boomers trivial pursuit to suit us and our sons- 12 and 13- by downloading a 6 category quiz question app on the phone and using those questions with the physical board)

Excellent Accommodations at Lowside in Penrith

This cottage was everything my family of 6 hoped it would be-- beautifully renovated, located in a gorgeous corner of the Lake District with outstanding hikes from the front door. I loved walking each morning to the local shop to pick up my coffee and newspaper for the today along with a slice of homemade tart and we were only about 15 minutes away from all our planned activities at Derwentwater Lake. Chris and Claire were friendly, organized and attentive to all we might need-- even providing us with milk upon arrival when we all realized the shops were closed. Thanks for sharing your beautiful corner of England and for a lovely stay!

Perfect

This cottage is within easy reach of the motorway, yet feels a million miles away. Tucked away in a peaceful and picturesque village, you can walk onto the fells from the door or easily drive to the popular Lake District centres. Would definitely recommend both the local walks that are mentioned in the owners' welcome folder. The owners are lovely, welcoming and helpful people full of local advice should you have any questions. We really appreciated their unobtrusive but friendly/helpful presence. The cottage itself is delightful, immaculately clean and very comfortable. There was even tea and cake to welcome us! A real home from home, if not better! Would definitely book again and will be recommending it (although it's tempting to keep it to ourselves!) Thank you, Claire and Chris, for a really enjoyable break.

Such a lovely stay at Lowside

Thank you to Claire and Chris for a warm welcome and a wonderful stay at Lowside Barn. My husband and I came to stay with our young son and my parents-in-law and this was a perfect place for all of us to relax at and use as a base for some explorations in the area. The barn is beautifully restored, with interesting art, plenty of space to store things away and all the bits and pieces needed for prepping food. As I said to Claire, even the knives were sharp, which was a nice change from most holiday rentals! We all enjoyed the cozy living room at night and the beautiful garden and views during the day, as well as the walk across the valley over the river. Askham was a short drive/walk/jog away, with a great little shop, a couple good pubs, and both Askham Gardens and Lowther Castle to boot for nice coffee & food. We sadly didn't make the heated outdoor swimming pool, but perhaps next time. Autumn or winter would be lovely and give us the chance to try out the wood burner!

Home away is exactly how the stay at Claire's house

We felt at home from the moment we've arrived. Accurate instructions for how to reach and how to operate the facilities. We forgot salt and oil and Claire immediately responded to our need. There are enough grocery stores to chose from in several minutes drive. The house is located in a picturesque view. A few min walk from a lovely river and about an hour walk to the castle grounds. Easy access to Ullswater and the villages around. Lots of updated recommendations for what to do and where to visit. Videos collection of fun family movies. Although my worries about COVID19 Claire made sure to reassure us to how she took care for the clearness of the house before our arrival and also instructed us very clearly how to leave the house. We obviously respected the instructions and helped the next visitors by keeping as clean as possible. We highly recommend staying Claire's home away. What a memorable vacation we've had! We wi be very happy to return! Thank you very much for a wonderful hospitality. From all of our family.

Unspoilt Corner of the Lakes

We had such a fabulous time staying in this lovely, unspoilt corner of the Lakes. Claire and Chris were the perfect hosts, nothing was too much trouble and they were a mine of useful information about the local area and must see places. The cottage was spotless, a simply lovely, cosy and comfortable cottage with very tasteful interior decoration and the views from the cottage across the fells were stunning. There wasn’t anything more that we needed, everything was provided and the welcome shortbreads were just amazing. This corner of the Lakes is an unspoilt gem of a place and so quiet and peaceful. Pooley Bridge across Askham Fell is well worth a visit and we had a lovely day walking to Brougham Castle and Hall, steeped in history Thanks for making us so welcome and comfortable, we had an amazing time and the weather was the icing on the cake. Claire and Chris are the perfect hosts and we’ll definitely be back. a huge thanks to you both from all of us.

Great stay in the Lake District

Claire and Chris were great hosts, very friendly and approachable. The property is exactly as shown in photos and the location is great for being able to walk straight out into the countryside for scenic walks, or you can easily drive further afield and visit other parts of the Lake District. We were able to walk over to Lowther Castle, and Askham very easily, and across Askham Fell to Pooley Bridge. We also had an easy drive over to Kewswick for a day's visit as well. Would recommend and stay again!

About the host

Hosted by Claire and Chris Robinson

Host profile image
After visiting the Lake District all our lives, for family outdoor adventures and special celebrations, we finally realised our dream of being able to live here in 2015. We have worked hard on Lowside Barn to enhance its original character to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, next to our house in an idyllic setting, surrounded by beautiful scenery......just what we have always looked for in a holiday cottage! We pride ourselves in our attention to detail and have equipped it to a high standard with every home comfort to make it feel like home from home for you.

We have a passion for the outdoors and between us have walked, kayaked and rock-climbed most of what is on our doorstep. Chris also has a special interest in geology and the landscape, he loves to share his local knowledge and experience with our visitors. We have maps and guide books for almost everything....you'll find us knowledgeable and helpful if you need advice in selecting your walks or activities.

We absolutely love this quiet unspoiled corner of the Lakes and our aim is to do all we can to enable you to have a really memorable experience of Lakeland and for this to become a special place for you, your family and friends too!

Why they chose this property

Our 5* reviews can speak for themselves:
“Thank you for providing such a well equipped and well cared-for place to stay. We were impressed by your care and attention to Covid safety.”
“This is a comfortable and well equipped cottage in a quiet and picturesque location. The owners are very helpful and welcoming.”
Though whilst we're on hand next door if needed to help with any questions you may have, we also absolutely respect your privacy to enjoy your holiday uninterrupted!

What makes this property unique

A particular feature of Lowside Barn is its elevated position facing towards the sunrise, giving us panoramic views across the beautiful and unspoiled Lowther Valley. The distinctive limestone scenery ranges from pastoral farmland dotted with pretty villages like ours, to further up the valley, the rugged fells around Haweswater that give access to the bigger High Street range of mountains. We're very near to the lakes and mountains but just far enough away from the busy spots to enjoy peace and quiet, with great walking and mountain biking trails on the doorstep.

Our limestone scenery is crisscrossed with ancient drystone walls, bridleways and paths or 'lonnings', leading either down to the River Lowther, or up onto Askham Fell above the village. In 45 mins walk from the house up onto the fell, you can overlook spectacular views of Ullswater (only 3miles over the fell) and it's backdrop of mountains, looking towards Blencathra in the north and Helvellyn to the south. Up on our fell it's also fun to explore the many groups of prehistoric cairns, standing stones and the Cockpit stone circle left by Helton's stone age settlers.

If you have children to entertain, it's about an hour's walk from the cottage across the river and along the valley to Lowther Castle and the amazing Lost Castle adventure playground, cafe and Dan Pearson garden. From the end of May to September, there's a well kept heated outdoor swimming pool in Askham, open afternoons at weekends and school holidays.
